One liners? Not only do you not understand, you can't count worth a d@mn!

Last year we got a chance to see what our "D2" DC could do in 1AA. We also got a chance to see what our "D2" Coach could do in his first year with a team that had only won 4 games the year before.

This year we will get to see what our "D2" DC can do without Mathis, Ware, and Nunn. We will also see what our "D2" Coach can do with a team that doesn't have to learn a new offense.

JSU

Alcorn

UAPB

The teams you stand to beat are yourselves (whichever is sorrier) and PV. Every team mentioned above return an average of 15 starters from last year (the exception might be SU but they are gonna wax ya'll anyway). Ya'll return nothing on offense or defense. And then you play JxnVille (loss...I mean beating) and TNState (loss very likely here). I predict AAMU to get 4 wins MAX and that would include at least one fluke.

Alabama A&M practiced in full pads for first time on Monday and coach Anthony Jones came away somewhat pleased.

"I think we've got something to work with," he said. "Our biggest problem is depth. We're worried about who's going to back up who and how deep we're going to be, in particular when you get people banged up.

"I think we have some talent. We're having some success moving the ball. Our defense is having some success stopping us from moving the ball. It appears we're going into this more even than we were last year where our defense was truly our strength."

Jones praised the play of tailbacks Jeremiah Bonds and Jacque Pylant and fullbacks Jonathan Rowland and Tim Boyd.

"Bonds looked good carrying the ball," he said. "Tim Boyd is doing some good things and Rowland is always consistent in what he does."

Defensively, Jones singled out the play of end Fernandez Shaw and linebackers Lionel Macklin and Johnny Baldwin.

Absentees: Several players missed practice on Monday. The list included defensive tackle Harold Penn (elbow), free safety Levernonte Turner (thigh), defensive back Reggie Johnson (thigh), free safety Derrick Franklin (knee), defensive back Reginald Spencer (concussion) and offensive lineman Jamaal Henry (shoulder).

Jones was hopeful that all of them would be back by Wednesday.

New kids are all right: Newcomers Henry Washington and Jonathan McConico have played well, according to defensive coordinator Brawnski Towns, and could earn playing time this season.

Washington, a transfer from Memphis, is backing up Henry Freeman at left corner, while McConico, a true freshman from Atlanta, is backing up Reggie Johnson and Jamerson Baker at right corner.

With free safety Levernonte Turner sidelined Monday, Washington took most of the snaps at left corner while Freeman played free safety.

"Henry has really done a nice job," Towns said. "I wouldn't be afraid to play him. We probably won't be able to keep McConico off the field with the way he's playing right now. I'm not sure if I'll play him at corner, but he'll be on all the special teams because he'll hit people and chase the football."

Review of scrimmage helps A&M coaches decide depth chart

08/18/03

By REGGIE BENSON
Times Sports Staff [email protected]

Anthony Jones thought he might have some tough decisions to make when it came to finalizing Alabama A&M's starting lineup.

The film made it easy for him.

After reviewing the film from Saturday's scrimmage, Jones and his staff put together their offensive and defensive units that will take the field when A&M entertains Jacksonville State on Aug. 30 in the season opener for both teams at Louis Crews Stadium.

"There were not any tough decisions to make," Jones said. "We looked at the film and the film showed exactly what they were doing. Some say it lies, but the film doesn't lie. We had some competition, but it was pretty clear."

With practices scaled back because of NCAA rules, Jones admitted some players may not have gotten enough work to win a job.

"We're working on a narrower time frame and we've got to turn our attention toward Jacksonville State," Jones said.

He said one of the better battles was at right defensive tackle, where Fred Solomon edged Harold Penn for the starting job.

"They competed hard," Jones said. "You had to put one of them on top. Both of them are going to play. Penn played real well in the scrimmage and made a lot of plays. He's compact and very strong. ... They'll give us a good 1-2 punch."

There will be four new starters on offense.

They include junior Demond Leslie at left guard, redshirt freshman Chris Franklin at center, true freshman Jamaal Henry at right guard and redshirt sophomore Walter Shearls at wide receiver.

There will be five new starters on defense.

Senior Brian Evans will start at left end, redshirt sophomore Fred Solomon at right tackle, senior Fernandez Shaw at right end, redshirt freshman Johnny Baldwin at Sam linebacker and redshirt senior John Garrett at Will linebacker.

"I'm satisfied with what we've got on first- and second-team," Jones said. "You'd like to have more experience, but that will come. We would like to be deeper across the board, but we're not.

"We're fine. I think we've got a good football team. I'm not going to trade any of my guys."

I know that stats don't mean sugar and they are for losers...but I hope that defense ^^^^^ is F-A-S-T and S-T-R-O-N-G because they don't seem to have a lot of meat on them. It seems like they would be prone to being pushed around a lot.

Mathis and Ware was the same size of the lineman we have now and they dominated. Speed kills on any level.

Prone to be pushed around..........I pity you fools.:mrt: :mrt: :mrt:

Your so called athletic program is
:dead: :dead: :dead:

Scaredog, what are you talking about? They just made an obvious observation of you all's pewny linemen. I mean, we all already know that they suck, cause your offense moved up and down the field at will. And we already knows what Jones thinks of your offense by trying to recruit a 5th year senior QB with one year of eligibility left, so leave all that "scared" crap at home.

:smh:

The paper was wrong they are still showing last years team so believe what you want. This last years roster listed for this year. Some of those players are on here so don't be fooled.

Thanks Cee

I knew that Jones wasnt that smart, but I also knew he wasnt that dumb...at least I dont think.

TP

Remember what Stinson did to them last year as a passing team? Whats going to happen this year when we really punish them with the run. This is going to get ugly.

Yall can start the flower bringing and slow singing now.

The only thing is, Mathis and Ware were talented. I doubt your glorified Pop Warner squad has as much talent as they had. Speed ain't nuthin' without talent and skill.....relay that to SU.

Dude, you should have been there. They cross the 50 one time on a hail Mary pass that got them to our 30 yard line. Three yards later they were back at the 50. They scored on a 5 yard fumble return and about a 10 yard int return. Our gameplan was to get the lead and punt the ball. We knew they could do nothing with it. You just should have been there.

smh... so JSU didnt only tried to score 13 points???? Hell the points you scored were off turnovers on our side of the field... JSU didnt have a real drive the whole game. Kent ran for his damn life the whole damn game. I bet Kent had an orgasm the day Robert Mathis got drafted into the NFL.

It sounds to me like both defenses shut both offenses down in that game. If AAMU was that sorry, surely the #1 rated offense in 1-AA could have scored more than 13 points against them. If they didn't have any talent the score would have been 60- 0. This looks like it had to be Kent's worst game all season.

I know Hughes was a complete moron but I doubt his actually gameplan would have been to just punt the ball to the other team and try to force turnovers on defense. This was the same guy who figured he didn't need a special teams in 2001 but he is not that stupid. I know that is probably just your idea of smack LP, but you really make your program look silly when you say stuff like that.
