Bulldogs have five no-shows on first day

Coach Anthony Jones said five players failed to show up as Alabama A&M reported for practice Monday.

The list included wide receivers Walter Shearls, Travis Martin and Joktan Roberts, fullback James Washington and linebacker Lindell Edwards.

Jones said Martin was completing an internship and should report by Wednesday, but he was not sure about the other players.

"They'll have some explaining to do when they get here," he said.

Jones said 87 players reported for practice.

"We're reserving three spots for guys who may get straight in a day or two," he said.

One of those Jones said could be running back Trevis Oneal, a transfer from Alabama. Oneal, who's from Leeds, was an invited walk-on at Alabama, and is expected to challenge Jeremiah Bonds for playing time.

Academic casualties hit A&M: Eight or nine of A&M's 37 signees will be academically ineligible, Jones said.

Offensive lineman Chris Glasper, a transfer from Coahoma (Miss.) Junior College, is currently the lone known casualty.

Glasper, 6-foot-1 and 290 pounds, was being counted on to help solidify an offensive line that lost three starters a year ago.

"We were counting on him, but he didn't get it done in the classroom," Jones said.

Jones also is awaiting word on fullback Keith Glover, who played at Georgia Military College. With no proven backup behind Jonathan Rowland, Glover (6-1, 260) would have been a perfect fit in A&M's run game.

"We knew some of the kids we signed were going to be non-qualifiers," Jones said. "Those kids will come to school and be in our program for a year and we'll re-sign them. Some of them have not cleared by the (NCAA) Clearinghouse and we'll have 14 days or until we get a final read on them.

"Most of them should be straight. We've got a couple of them on the borderline."Good first impressions: Jones said he liked what he saw of his newcomers Monday.

Today, he gets his first look at them on the field when the Bulldogs hold their first practice.

"Some of them looked good," he said, "but sometimes you walk into a kitchen and the food looks good, but when you taste it, sometimes there's too much sugar or too much salt. You can't tell until you get down to the meat and potatoes and actually taste it.

"We've got to get them on the field and see how they respond," he said. "Looking at them, they look like a good bunch of guys."

Jones singled out some offensive linemen, including Jamaal Henry, Rod Johnson, Brandon Thornton, Brandon Bell and Lemuel Luckett, to name a few.

"Some of those guys may be forced to play," he said.

Oh well............, maybe there are some more Bama State mess, I mean stories the mafia can post today.:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Well actually, other people have been posting articles about ASU. Take a look at some of the threads.

During media day, your coach said the same thing I have been saying all this time. Your offense was poor last year. Mostly, A&M fed off of its defense. The defense is not going to be anywhere close to its performance of last year. Therefore your offense and team is going to suffer even more. You guys are probably going to be a trainwreck on the field this year.

GR,

You sound stupid, man. :)

Okay....we know that our offense was poor LAST YEAR. Yeah, Mathis and Ware are gone....fine.

But as far as the offense is concerned...that was LAST YEAR! I'm sorry to tell you, but JSU is not the only team who are ALLOWED TO IMPROVE the following year!
If that were the case, y'all would've been in all 4 SCGs, right? ;)

You keep harping on our defense, but why should anyone believe that your defense is better than ours? What...no one graduated? Y'all had the best LAST YEAR supposedly? C'mon, guy...tell it. :D

Beans You Lie......

You must care because you're always the one rushing to post something that you perceive as negative about AAMU. Give some of the other 'laughfia' a chance to post what they perceive as negative comments about AAMU.

The 'laughfia' doesn't realize it yet, but y'all are in a sorry sad state of affairs with your football team. All of your exaggerated talk, smoke & mirrors is destined to blow up in your faces. In other words.......y'all in a heepa-trouble this athletic season!
:eek2: :eek2: :eek2:

Beans..... The Huntsville Times unlike most other newspapers comes out at noon and doesnt get to al.com until 2pm. The Bham and Mobile papers come out in the morning therefore it is on al.com in the am... so what you perceived as todays paper actually was yesterdays.... you probably didnt know that and that is why AAMU posters may have asked why you didnt post the article from todays... no sweat... keep posting articles from all SWAC schools... i enjoy reading them without having to go to sites from each schools particular newspaper..

Beans, why don't you post something on my boys? You may have a more sophisticated computer with a larger search engine than mine. :smh:

Oh.... that's right... you can't find anything on them because our SID is out on extended medical leave and our Athletic Director can't put together three words to make a complete sentence.

Alois, I pray you are reading this.

Thanks Dahill

A&M's pups forced to learn quickly

Bulldogs veterans and newcomers practice for nearly three hours

08/06/03

Some players walked off the field smiling. Others walked off the field looking bewildered.

Welcome to the first day of preseason football practice.

After almost three hours of work Tuesday afternoon, Alabama A&M coach Anthony Jones blew his whistle to end practice. More meetings were scheduled later that night.

"It was a long day," outside linebacker Martel Holt said. "Some people were prepared and some weren't. It'll get better. It's just the first day."

It's the first of many as A&M prepares for its season opener against Jacksonville State on Aug. 30. The Gamecocks handed the Bulldogs one of their four losses last season.

There is plenty of time to prepare. After all, isn't that what practice is all about?

"It was a pretty good day," quarterback Tim Robinson said. "We're just trying to learn what we're supposed to do."

That is certainly the case for A&M's freshmen.

Over the past few years, they reported a couple of days early and were taught the schemes. This year, they've been thrown in with the veterans, which is no easy task.

"It's tough because before we were allowed to go at a snail's pace," Jones said. "We were trying to get them from Point A to Point B, but now we're trying to get them from Point A to Point C.

"It takes away from what we could do with them. We've had to throw them in the fire with the veterans. They're having to learn the plays at a rapid pace, but that's the way it has to be."

Some will learn quicker than others. Those who do will get a chance to play early.

"The biggest difference at this level is speed and size," Jones said. "It can be intimidating."

Holt wasn't intimidated by A&M's newcomers. But he had taken stock of the number of quality kids Jones and company have persuaded to become Bulldogs.

"We've got a lot of good players ... a lot of good first-year players," Holt said. "It's going to make us old cats work a little harder to keep our positions. We're ready for the challenge."

The challenge for Jones is to fill key holes with seldom-used veterans or with some of his talented newcomers. Which action he takes could hold the key to a second straight trip to the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game.

"We've got some good athletes," Jones said. "They're not players yet, but our job as coaches is to turn them into players. We've got guys who can run, jump and catch. Do they know where to run, jump and catch? Not yet, but they'll get there."

Bulldogs holding out hope for Harris

Bulldogs holding out hope for Harris

Alabama A&M's defensive tackle position, considered one of the Bulldogs' strengths, would take a major hit if Jerald Harris is unable to return.

Harris, the Bulldogs' best tackle during the spring, has yet to report for practice because of some problems with his heart, coach Anthony Jones said.

Jones said Harris encountered some heart problems near the end of spring practice and has yet to be cleared.

"We're taking every precaution to make sure everything checks out," Jones said.

Harris, a 5-foot-11, 263-pound senior from Mobile, was one of four returning tackles that were scheduled to help offset the loss of defensive end Robert Mathis.

If Harris is unable to return, A&M will have only two proven tackles in Ali Hasan and De'Andre Washington. Harold Penn has played some as well.

Three Bulldogs return: Three of the five players who failed to show up on Monday were back in the fold Tuesday, Jones said.

Wide receivers Walter Shearls and Joktan Roberts, along with inside linebacker Lindell Edwards, were at practice Tuesday afternoon. Shearls and Edwards practiced but Roberts watched from the sideline.

Jones said Travis Martin was completing an internship and should report today. He had still not heard from fullback James Washington, a former Bob Jones standout.

"I called him (Tuesday)," Jones said. "If I haven't heard from him by the end of the day, I'm going to move on."

A&M No. 5 in Sheridan poll: A&M was one of four Southwestern Athletic Conference teams to earn a spot in the Sheridan Broadcasting Network Sports Black College Football preseason poll.

The Bulldogs, coming off of an 8-4 season and a berth in the SWAC Championship Game, were ranked fifth in the 10-team poll.

Grambling, the defending Black College national champion, was tabbed the preseason favorite. Bethune-Cookman was picked to finish second followed by Tuskegee, Florida A&M, Alabama A&M, Jackson State, Fayetteville State, Hampton, Morgan State and Southern

I hope this guy is alright.

I hope this kid is alright. A&M needs an upgrade and depth at the tackle position, if not, teams like JSU and SU will run over them similar to last years performance. A&M cant stand anymore casualties on defense if they hope to have a winning season. They will already be poor on offense again and they showed last spring that the defense is very very shakey.

My main man NT....

Look dude, I only repeating what your coach pathetically mummbled at media day. You got a problem with it, go ask him. You might be able to make out his response.

A&M simply does not have the players or coaching to be a top team in the SWAC. It will be a long time before you guys are successful again. You better hire Coles as an OC.

and your coach couldnt even take a high school playoff team returning starters to no better than #4 in its AREA. I promise you will be calling for his head by the end of this year.... put this in one of your quotes.

Get Ready, will you do me a favor? Since you and Bell wear and trade Polo shirts and all, go head a tell him that AAMU is not a top team in the SWAC this year. Tell him that his boys don't need to worry about AAMU. Tell him when JSU plays AAMU to overlook the Bulldogs and worry about the next team on the schedule. In fact even though I don't bet, if you choose to place a bet on the AAMU/JSU game, put all your money and life savings on JSU. Go ahead.:D

P.S. Dumbell just might believe you too..,

how you can talk about coaching and youhave a idiot who went 1-9 last year....truly amazes me!

im so glad we dont have to hear all this bs when the season gets into gear....Im sure Bell will make all yall look stupid for trying to hype him up lol

I'll be glad too. Then ya'll can rant and rave about a W/L record that actually has something to do with JSU instead of all this wishful thinking.
