Building a better Bruce Eugene

You cant have a football discussion. This is the feel good place where you have to pat everyone on the back and if you tell the truth or give your honest opionon the word "hate" comes to play.

No GR, I beleive you are taking what everybody is saying out of context. Yes this is a feel good thread showing or giving support for Bruce in hopes that he will make it to the next level. If both Bruce and Kent make it to the league, that looks good for the swac. As for your opinion, everyone is entitled to an opinion and noone is trying to take your opinion away from you. But if you want to discuss why Bruce may or maynot make it into the league, then start a thread about and we will be more than willing to discuss and compare the why's and why not's.
Right time but not the right place.

Can we all be honest here? can we all be serious here? Okay...

Truth is that Bruce is going to have a hard time getting drafted anyway, because is from a I-AA school. True his numbers are going to allow him to get some looks, plus playing for Doug is going to help him get some looks too. But if he doesn't drop the weight, he is only going to hurt his chances. There were two record setting 1-AA QB's last seaosn, I don't think either was drafted(I could be wrong on that). And him dropping the weight doesn't look promising right now. Loosing 30-40 pounds as some have stated is not an easy task. If it was he would have lost that weight by now. The truth is that by NFL standards, he is considered short at slightly over 6'. But that won't be as big a knock on him as his weight will be, even with the mobility that he has. Be it fair or not, the league looks for certain physical attributes in certain players. They want tall solid QB's. They like power backs, but not big backs(look at Greg Jones), and not too small(notice there isn't much buzz about Darren Sproiles, and Warrick Dunn is still knocked for his size). Big WR's, but not too big(see David Boston). The only positions where bigger is better is O-Line and DT.

This is a Sports Board. There will be Pros and Cons and any issue and that what makes a debate so speical. I have one question. Does anyone watch Pardon the Interruption or Around the Horn on ESPN? I recommend that you watch. If the man has an opinion on Bruce let him speak. He is entitled to it. He does not have to start another thread for that.

I think that Bruce need to lose some weight and his accuracy need to be tweaked a little.

I thought thats what this was. Are you telling me I have to start a completely different thread to disagree with you about Bruces reign over the NFL? I wish him the best. Hope he wins 5 Superbowls....but in all LOGICAL probability.....

Suge and EyE, I agree with what you are saying. Yeah Bruce already has 2 strikes against him, his weight and the division he plays in. But if Bruce can stick to the plan "building a better Bruce" that the coaches have laid out for him then IMO I think he has a realistic shot of making it to the next level. Even more so than K"int". I read more so than I post and I am sorry but GR has not just straight out and said Bruce is a good quarterback, with the exception of the snub of Bruce to the ALL SWAC team. GR finds reasons to say why Bruce is not a good QB. GR gives Bruce a mention when GR is debating with another swac team GSU beat. That is where the term "hating" comes to play.

No GR I am not saying you have to start a new thread to disagree with me about Bruce going to the NFL. But the thread had a nice flow to it then you inserted the negative remarks. Give the kid some postives before tearing him down is all I am saying. Being real about it, Bruce does face an uphill battle of getting into the NFL but does not mean we should not support Bruce and just say fugg it because of this, that, and the other? What is your honest opinion about Kent being drafted? Would I like to see Kent go? lleh yeah, at that point it is not about J-State, GSU, PV, SU, AAMU it is about the swac. We need as much exposure as we can get.

Will somebody please break out the FN violins? How many times do I have to say I wish the kid the best? Just because you are an excellent college QB, that does not mean it is going to translate to the NFL (Danny Wuerfel, Geno Toretta, Chuck Long, Willie Totten, Ryan Leaf, Andre Ware send help).

My bad...nevermind anything I said.

Bruce is a prototype QB...
He is 6 4
Weighs 220
Has a nice arm that can complete 15 yard outs
Has good form
Is very accurate
Is tough (mentally and physically)
Already plays is a pro-style system
Has excellent footwork
Has stepped up when playing tough non conference opponents.

So you guys are right. Bruce has everything he needs to make it on the next level. You are right.

LOL@GR. Rarely do GR and I agree. But in this case he is right on the money. Nothing against Bruce. He has been a great SWAC Qb. But even if he loses weight he is only 6'0 or 6'1 and he probably will still have a slow 40 time. Hell Joe Montana was drafted low because of his height(same as Bruce) and he had no weight issues and went to Notre Dame and won a National title. So what you think is going to happen to Bruce coming from a HBCU. RObert Kent is getting the looks because he is 6'5 and has a canon arm. I am sure NFL scouts realize he has not had any training to improve and figure they can do something with him, plus he is an hell of an athlete. The NFL likes these tall Qbs like Culpepper, Mc Nabb, McNair, Brooks and Leftwich who better be glad he was 6'5 at his weight.

You have to have Vick like speed and a canon arm to even get a look if you are under 6'3 and are a black Qb. Vick is the exception to the rule being 6'0-6'1. If he wasn't fast as he is and was 240lbs he would be back in Va. Shaun King is the only other guy I can think of that recently has been drafted at QB being under 6'2. Wille Totten had no height and that's why he didn't get a look until he played that one game with Buffalo during the NFL strike.

I commend Doug and the GSU staff for pushing Bruce and trying to help him, but the scouts already know that kid don't like to work out. If he has to be pushed by his coaches at this point in his carrer then that's pretty bad in their eyes. He knows he's overweight. When McNair was at Alcorn he was actually smaller than he is now and he had a good work ethic. But McNair was just like Doug when he left GSU. Both were just big ole country boys. For folks who ain't never seen Mac up close. He aint no 6'2. He 's every bit of 6'3. If he wasn't, the NFL would have made the case that he was really not that height and made his draft status drop. They do it all the time after the combines and find out those colleges lied in the press guide about height and weight. Remember Jerry Rice's 40 time. It caused him to slip.

Like GR, I wish Bruce the best. But the kind of black Qbs that are in the NFL now is going to make it hard for him to get drafted. He don't fit that mold. He also will have to get mentally tough as well. I know Doug has had issue with him on that note. The NFL will swallow his arse up if he aint. Even if he does get a chance.

BTW

Dont let me forget Bruce's perfect overhead release. Since he is only 6', that perfect release of his (never throwing side armed) will be perfect for some lucky NFL team.

Move over McNair, now there is something meatier.

Shhhheeeesh.

I want Bruce to do well, but we have to look at the reality of the situation. Many good college quartebacks get over looked in the NFL draft.

Anybody remember a guy that played QB at Florida State? He won the Heisman Trophy and did not get drafted. I believe he plays point guard in the NBA now.

Speaking of Charlie Ward who opted not to play in the NFL but the NBA.

Grambling Football has had a couple of "will never's" to overcome. They said that a black QB will never start in the NFL, James Harris silenced that. Theyu said that a black QB would never win a Superbowl, Doug Williams proved that not to be true. Now some black oppressors, because whites don't have to do it anymore, are saying that a talented 6 footer from the same school will never make it. History will prove itself again........... Bruce, if you should see this thread, this should make you work even harder. Good Luck BRUCE!!!!!

He wasn't drafted because he and his agent said before the draft if he wasn't a first round pick he will opt out to play basketball. No G.M. was going to waste a pick on that.

Thanks for that extended explanation BG but some GM out there would have given C-Ward a chance to prove himself. We will never know because C-Ward choose the NBA instead. IMO, i believe C-Ward was being honest with hisself knowing he was to light to play in the NFL and have a long career.

Someone mentioned Bruce's forty yard dash time as being critical to his chances. I don't think that will be a factor at all. What will be an issue is his weight or loss of it. Although it will be rather difficult to lose 40 plus pounds, getting started in that direction will show the pros that he did commit himself to improvement.

Some mention has been made of his mechanics. I think an improvement in his conditioning will have a positive impact on his thowing motions. Fatigue tends to make an athlete take short cuts. Bruce needs to commit to throwing all during the spring and summer to keep his arm tuned up. I'm not talking about all out throwing, but a daily regimen of throwing the pass scale. Just make sure he has warmed up by doing some calesthenics, light running. Even shooting baskets (no pick up games) can help him in his cross training. I've always felt that good deep passers could improve their depth perception by shooting baskets.

Anyway...best wishes to the young man as he pursues his dreams. Whichever way it goes, he has been the source of some good times for the GSU faithful.

AMEN!!!
Very nicely put Mike Bigg!

MAYBE I OVERREACTED!

I JUST CAN'T STAND TO HERE NEGATIVE TALK ABOUT A PLAYER ON MY SCHOOL'S TEAM. ESPECIALLY IF HE'S MY HOMEBOY, AND ALSO WHEN IT'S COMING FROM SOMEBODY THAT WENT TO A SCHOOL THAT HE SCORCHED. BASICALLY, THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT I THINK HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAY BAD ABOUT PASSO IS GRAM OR SU FANS.

Let me ask a question...

Is saying that Bruce is 6 feet, 280, with a sidearm release a negative remark about Bruce?
