Building a better Bruce Eugene

GSU trying to keep star QB on track for '04

GRAMBLING - Hope springs eternal in each recruiting season. But that isn't always because of new faces in new places.

Grambling State coaches place hopes for a return to Southwestern Athletic Conference title glory squarely on the shoulders of a veteran, senior quarterback Bruce Eugene - who returned to campus this week to begin a vigorous off-season training program.

"We talk about recruiting in New Orleans, about college football," said GSU offensive coordinator Melvin Spears. "But I constantly try to refocus him on the fact that he's not like everybody else."

No, Eugene is GSU's most draftable senior this season, a quarterback with stunning numbers in two years of starting.

Eugene is the school's record-holder in passing completions, attempts, yards and total offense, and is ranked second in passing touchdowns. He is also GSU's single-season record holder in yards, completions and TDs.

With a year of eligibility left, Eugene is already ranked fifth in the SWAC for career passing yards.

But the two-time finalist for the Walter Payton Award, given to the national top Division I-AA athlete on offense, must first concern himself with one other number: His weight.

"He's got to get in the proper mindset," Spears said. "It's bigger than playing quarterback at Grambling right now. His future is at stake."

He has a written list of things to eat, a schedule for aerobics and weightlifting and film study.

"The first thing scouts say is, he's got a strong arm but he's got to lose weight," Eugene said. "So, I'm coming back for some hard-nosed conditioning."

Just 17 hours away from graduating, Eugene sees his time at Grambling State drawing to a close. His coaches see a scary opportunity for their quarterback to grow soft without the structure of classes.

So, Eugene has to answer questions about what he has for breakfast and how late he eats each day. But, above all, he gets hassled about school - where also Spears insists that Eugene must finish strong.

"I'm a real stickler about his academic achievement," Spears said. "If you're going to be the best quarterback in the nation, you've got to have good grades."

Eugene is sure to get some looks from NFL scouts, if only because he's returning for a season when two of the SWAC's dominant passing teams - Southern and Jackson State - are losing conference-leading seniors under center. Only Alcorn State has a returning senior superstar at quarterback.

But a strong recruiting class will also mean that Eugene will be pushed from behind: Grambling State has received verbal commitments from Carroll High's Brandon Landers and LaMarque High's Larry Kerlegan - top quarterback prospects in Louisiana and Texas, respectively.

"I don't think Bruce is worried about any of the kids coming in," said GSU coach Doug Williams, as 28 recruits visited Grambling one recent weekend. "It should not matter to Bruce. He should be the best mentor to whoever comes in - to let them know that they should keep this job in good hands when he leaves."

Spears believes Eugene will rise to that mentoring challenge, as well.

"With the talent we're putting around him," Spears said, "he's going to light up. Right now, I think he's ready to do the things he needs to so. Certainly, he needs to lose weight to get to the next level. But he also needs consistency to succeed."

That means Eugene spends his mornings in class, and his afternoons with Spears. "Bruce is probably as close to me as any players I've been around," Spears said.

But everyone at Grambling State owns a piece of his success, Eugene said. He works closely with Spears and Williams - but also has developed a warm relationship with receivers coach Sammie White.

"He stays in the background, but he puts his two cents in," Eugene said. "Coach White is the one who keeps me calm on the sidelines. Those three have helped me get here - and I can't tell you how thankful I am."

The talk around the athletic offices has often touched on a shocking off-season snub the senior received: Despite leading Division I-AA this season in total offense, Eugene wasn't selected for the All-Southwestern Athletic Conference team. That letdown came hard on the heels of a last-second loss to Southern in the Bayou Classic that prevented Grambling State from trying for a fourth straight SWAC championship.

"There's an empty feeling inside," Eugene said. "My first three years, we won a championship. I've gotten used to being in Birmingham for championship games, and winning it."

His coaches say overcoming those setbacks will be the key to a successful season for Eugene - whatever his weight.

"Not winning some of those awards will help him focus," Spears said. "Not winning some of those conference awards - and not winning the championship will help him get there. He has to make this team better. That's what we expect of him. And he has to expect some disappointments along the way. I think he's ready."

The road to GSU

The road to GSU

Over the years, the same Alabama high school has been a major talent source for Tigers

GRAMBLING - Parker High remains a trusted partner in growing the Grambling State football program: Receiver Xavier Jackson and offensive lineman Tavares Cochran - two more students from the Birmingham, Ala., school - have verbally committed to play for the Tigers.

Verbal commitments are non-binding. National Signing Day is Feb. 4.

"I always start in the Birmingham, Ala., area - and specifically Parker High School," said assistant head coach Melvin Spears, Grambling State's recruiting specialist. He spent the month of December on the road talking to prospective players. "We have a tendency to go back to areas and institutions like that, once you get a foothold."

The connections stretch from the earliest days of Grambling State football - when Eddie Robinson's recruited future Pro Football Hall of Famer Junious "Buck" Buchanan - into today's roster. Current head coach Andre Robinson played both at Parker and then at GSU - earning the Tigers' defensive MVP honors in 1981.

"He's been sending us guys for the last four to five years," Spears said - including sophomore running back Henry Tolbert, strong safety Joshua Bester and defensive end Antonio Hughes. Three-time All-SWAC linebacker Robert Taylor also attended the Birmingham school.

"Kids have gone down there and done well over the years," Robinson said, "and we like continuing that tradition."

Cochran is one of this recruiting season's most intriguing finds - a lineman in the style of Buchanan in that he also plays basketball.

"He was All-State as offensive tackle and defensive tackle," Robinson said. "He's very athletic. And since he's a basketball player, you know he's got great feet. He moves very well."

Meanwhile, Jackson will be among those trying to fill the void created with the graduation of two-time All-American wide receiver Tramon Douglas. Jackson had more than 900 yards and 14 touchdowns for Robinson this season.

"Parker High School has some outstanding student-athletes," Spears said, "and, more importantly, the coach is a Grambling grad. He's always promoting our school, just by doing well there."

Robinson said having players like Cochran and Jackson continue on to his alma mater is always special.

"That's one of the biggest thrills of my life, seeing kids go down and continue the tradition of Parker-to-Grambling," said Robinson, one of just 150 high school coaches and administrators invited to the NFL's Youth Football Summit in 2002.

"We talk about that tradition at lot," Robinson said. "Both in that, most importantly, you can get a college degree - all of those Parker guys graduated - but also the great football legacy."

I think my boy Paso (Bruce) will shut up the critics about his weight and come into the season in great shape. I feel for the SWAC this year, b/c of his non-selection to any of the All-SWAC Teams. So look out SWAC, look for some outstanding numbers.

I think the Grambling coaches are on the right track with Eugene. The SWAC better get ready because it looks like the G-Men are going to show up..........again.

I expect a banner year throughout the league next season. Most teams return a lot of talent. I know the jags will have a strong nucleus back this year. Also look for SU and GSU to get some transfers who will add depth and talent.

There's a lot of good high school talent that will be available. LSU's recruiting has shifted to the national level...that means a lot of talented players left over for the rest of the schools. GSU and SU will do well for it's share of players. Both have firm committments from two of the top qb's in La.

LOOK OUT SWAC

SOUNDS LIKE BRUCE WILL BE LOOKING FOR ANOTHER RECORDBREAKING YEAR, I'D SAY AT LEAST 4000 YARDS AND 40TDS.

GSU speeds along rebuilding at cornerback

GSU speeds along rebuilding at cornerback

Losing both cornerbacks to graduation left Grambling State in desperate need to a top-notch recruit for 2004.

Pencil in Houston defensive back Deshon Pennie - who has verbally committed to GSU.

The Aldine Nimitz High School standout, who was named first-team all district as a senior, says attending Grambling State fulfills a lifetime's goal.

"I always wanted to go to a black college," said Pennie, a 6-0, 180-pound DB who Nimitz coach Randy Rowe says runs a legitimate 4.4 in the 40-yard dash. "Grambling, I always thought they were a pretty good football team. People kept bringing them up, telling me that was a good choice."

Pennie said he was being pursued by Texas A&M, Nebraska, Texas Christian and Texas Tech.

A spot on the GSU cornerback unit - which last season included senior Seneca Lee, who led the Southwestern Athletic Conference for the bulk of the year in passes defensed - promises to be one of the more competitive opportunities this off-season.

"I love competition," Pennie said. "I'll give it everything. I don't stop until the whistle blows."

Pennie has also had success in track at Nimitz High, finishing second in the 100-yard dash at the 2003 District 21-5A track and field championships in Texas. That means pursuing a second athletic goal is something that he can't rule out.

"I think I will probably do both, track and football," Pennie said. "I'm a four-year letterman in track. Even my freshman year, I made it to regionals."

His commitment is non-binding. National signing day is Feb. 4.

Aloha, Hawaii game: The University of Hawaii is no longer pursuing a proposed three-game deal with Grambling State. UH officials say they will instead focus on opponents from Division I-A.

Hawaii - which, like Louisiana Tech, is a member of the Western Athletic Conference - would have been the Tigers' second WAC foe in as many years. GSU opened the 2003 season against San Jose State.

The proposed deal would have included one game in Hawaii and then two more matchups in Japan - recalling the overseas visits by Grambling State set up by legendary original sports information director Collie J. Nicholson.

East Tennessee WR transfers: GSU has picked up a transfer from East Tennessee.

Frank Green joins several key recruits, along with breakout freshman star Tim Abney, in a group seeking to replace graduating two-time All-American Tramon Douglas at receiver.

"He could give them all a run for their money," said GSU offensive coordinator Melvin Spears.

A 6-1, 180-pound wideout from Berkley High School in Monks Corner, S.C., Green totaled 1,212 yards on 36 receptions in his prep career, while scoring 15 touchdowns. Selected to play in the North-South All-Star game, he then led the South in receptions and yardage. He long snapped and returned punts as a prep player.

Green also ran track in high school, finishing as the region's 100-meter champion his junior year and appearing on the regional champion 400 relay team.

He redshirted at East Tennessee in 2002, then pulled in 16 receptions for 242 yards and a touchdown last season for the Bucs. Green also returned a kick for another score.

Tiger bites: A story in The (Memphis, Tenn.) Commercial Appeal about the popularity of throwback jerseys among players with the city's NBA franchise mentioned Grizzlies forward James Posey is fond of those featuring GSU head coach Doug Williams. ... Carolina Panthers backup Rodney Peete was asked this week about being a black quarterback: "We've come a long way since Doug Williams, and my personal feeling at the time was that it was great that he was able to lead that team to a Super Bowl. It was the beginning of the end of the talk that a black quarterback can't win a championship. As time has gone by, that has become a moot point."

Im closer to getting drafted than Bruce. Its a good thing he is only 17 hours away from graduating. Bruce is really going to need that degree.

I think that you are wrong on this one. IMHO, the Grambling coaches have the correct recipe for preparing him to be successful on the next level. I thought that they should have been on this since last winter. If you look at the difference in Eugene and the Lorenza Kid (sp the Kentucky) quarterback off season training impact, Stevie Wonder could see that Eugene did not do the things he should have or had the guidance. This additional element will make him even more potent and surely take him to the next tier.

If this boy comes back in shape there will be no one in the conference that poses a challenge to Grams championship aspirations but S.U. and maybe Bama St. Look for the Bayou Classic to draw over 70,000......again!

Look,

I know this is the PC board, but Bruce aint going nowhere. I wish him the best, hopes he breaks every NCAA record, but he wont see no parts of the NFL.

Get Ready, what makes you think he will not get drafted? I need facts. He has lit up the SWAC since his first game, including J-State. I agree with you JROCK, but Bruce will put up big numbers regardless of his weight, the SWAC is not strong only a few teams will give us some competition. Now SU, you can throw everything out the window, thats a good ole brawl that ya'll have been winning.

I agree with everyone that has posted so far except GR. If Bruce's supporting cast shows up, Bruce will have a banner year. Bar none. I know GSU want post a 2 & 10 record.

After reading your initial thoughts on Bruce, I didnt think you were "hating" (I dont really like using that word) because there is a chance that he won't be drafted even if he repeats his accomplishments from the last two years. Ken Dorsey, after going 38-2 over his career at the University of Miami and holding most of the school's passing records, barely made the cut after being drafted in the 7th round of the draft a couple of years ago. So you could be right. Bruce could possibly end up not being drafted.

However, after reading your second post, I read HATE all over it. To say Bruce isn't going anywhere is ridiculous. Hell, even Kent is getting a look from the NFL and he sucks with a capital S. The bottom line here, HateReady, is that Bruce is good enough to be drafted and at the very least, be signed as a free agent by an NFL team. So he will see the NFL, no doubt. On top of that, having Doug as a "promoter" will assure him of a chance.

Robert Kent. 6'5", 220 lbs. Rocket arm.

Bruce Eugene. 6'0", 280lbs. Rocket arm.

NFL doesn't draft short QBs. NFL doesn't draft fat QBs. That's GR's point.

Bruce has to get that weight down to have any shot.

You would get on this thread exaggerating Bruce's numbers to support HateReady's foolishness. Bruce Eugene is listed at 6'1 245 lbs even though a blind man can see that he is more like 6'1" and 255 lbs-260 lbs. The article used to start this thread revolved around him getting physically prepared to make himself NFL-ready. See:

"He's got to get in the proper mindset," Spears said. "It's bigger than playing quarterback at Grambling right now. His future is at stake."

He has a written list of things to eat, a schedule for aerobics and weightlifting and film study.

"The first thing scouts say is, he's got a strong arm but he's got to lose weight," Eugene said. "So, I'm coming back for some hard-nosed conditioning."

Now, if Bruce can lose 30-35 lbs, this would put him at 6'1" 225 lbs. NFL quarterbacks such as McNabb and McNair are listed at 6'2" 225 lbs. Some have said that McNabb is even heavier. But in terms of height, he and McNair are only an inch taller than Bruce and there are quite a few QBs that are Bruce's height or even shorter. QBs like Drew Brees and Flutie aren't even 6'0" and the backup at Oakland is like 6'0" and 220 lbs.

Would Bruce be given a chance at his present weight? No. The scouts are saying he needs to lose weight. That's plain as day in print. But given the fact that he's back and ready to do what he has to do to prepare for the NFL, I would say his chances are great to be in an NFL camp next year.

WHY??

WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE RESPONDING TO GET READY? IT'S OBVIOUS HE OR SHE IS STUPID! YOU WOULD THINK GET READY WOULD JUST SUPPORT ANOTHER SWAC BROTHER TRYING TO MAKE IT, BUT I GUESS THAT BACKSIDE INJURY IS AGRRAVATED FROM BEING KICKED IN FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS IN FOOTBALL AND IT'S CAUSING HER TO BLURT OUT STUPIDITY. Politically correct statement.

Bruce is doing well and is surely to be drafted by and NFL team.

The truth

Bruce is under 6 feet, has poor mechanics, and is playing in an offense and against schools that allow him to put up large mostly insignificant stats. Plus, and I know you dont want to hear this...the kid has a tendancy to weigh about 280 lbs on a 6 foot frame.

Now, for all of you that say I hate this kid, you couldnt be farther from the truth. Why would I hate a kid? I would be surprised if an NFL team takes a serious look at Bruce.

Inflated stats are meaningless to NFL scouts, ask Willie Totten.
