Budget cuts put pause to Jukebox travel!

TP you are doing it again...

~exposing your lack of knowledge~

Go ask a FAMU alum or member if they would ever "consider" taking 180 to Mumford...

If they want to support their team, the answer is yes. See this is what GR be talkin about. You band people think it's about ya'll. It's not. It's about those kids on the field! Yes, I know you don't want people all over the internet sayin SUcks got blown out by Howard... but your team deserves the highest of support.

SU and FAMU are the very few bands that are known for going on the road tearing into bands arses....

WRONG! FAMU ain't known for going ANYWHERE. Ask them the last time they went to A&T, Howard, Hampton, Del State, Morgan, etc... the only bands FAMU see are when they have Classic or 1-A invites and MAYBE SCState. JSU has traveled WAY more than FAMU.

I'm speaking on WHEN they do travel.... FAMU could be silly like some of you and send 128 easy to EVERY road trip.... BUT FAMU will not keep the reputation they so long built... some of yuo will never understand or get it......smh

Your philosophy has changed since Greggs left. What ever happened to the phrase “quality over quantity”? Maybe you all need to bring Greggs back so you all can travel in 2010?

Doc would never travel with 128. <<(thats a period) And the 48 in 89 never went on the road! But Doc did make money from paying gigs that went into the "General Fund" and we never had a problem traveling. Now I don't know whats going on up there with appropriation of funds and whatnot, but The Jukebox did enough Saint's games and NBA games to not have to beg any entity for a nickel. Maybe the budget people are trying to make a point or Mr. J is, but the band, unlike all the "extracurriculars(band is not an extracurricular activity- you recieve a grade for the class, and some receive a degree in it)", with the exception of football, that makes money, turns a profit, is self sufficient, etc. So somebody ia flubbing with the money! Jackson better grow a pair and demand what is his! He may try to out do Doc, but he first needs to learn to "Do like Doc!"

So it's about a bands' reputation. Not about the school, fans or the team. Ok...got it. Right now FAMU is known as the band too big to afford to travel. If they like it....

I'm sure ASU is probably saying 128 needs to be the traveling band during season. That would save money for hotel cost and food cost and transportation cost also because 128 only needs 3 55 passenger buses. I know Grambling only takes the full band to home games and Classic games because the people over the Classics pay for the band travel and it doesn't come out of the band budget. The only time the full band is taken to all the games is if the numbers are low but like in 2004 we were about 275 and only took 168 to away games even against a 300 plus Cookman in a game in Ohio.

275???? Really??? In 2004? Seriously???? Dude you know and i know Grambling aint never had no damn 275 instrumentalist on the field. That is a straight up lie. It's not like i dislike Grambling's band, ( wait a minute, i really don't like you all), but anyway every year they show the Bayou Classic, GSU show is chartered for 128 musicians. DO THE MATH>>>>> 4 lines of 32 equal 128. Hell GSU played us(Tenn St. in 2003 or 2004 Las Vegas, Nevada in the Silver Dollar Classic, yall were 128. Stop exaggerating on a completely ridiculous level on the size of your band. The day when Grambling gets 192 on the field ( which is 6 lines of 32) is the day Tennessee State will join the SWAC.

Dude.. Doc took 40 in 89' for campus political reasons.. had nothing to do with the budget..

LOL @ these cats who program still haven't figured it out trying to give SU suggestions...
You don't know what work for us... and what we look for ... 128 is enough for the field.... It ain't what we want on the ROAD son!!!

SU used to roll small but never that small... except for the ONE time in 89'....

SU has a rep to uphold and it too many bands waiting to see a SU band on the road "THAT SMALL"... We ain't taking 128 to a bands backyard that has 250+...
SU don't aim to just DEAL with a band .. we aim to CRUSH bands....

Again...128 ain't what we do in the stands.. You from GSU trying to school me on MY band...come on son.

Go talk to my CB E. Scales that was a student director at GRAM... he know SU better than you.. and he will tell you ...."Brah no..... that is not how SU roll"...

Again, SU gone have it together..

Yall up here shotting out suggestions when SU is a the MOST traveled band during football season in all SWAC.... This budget cut at it's worst will still have SU band making more appearances than most of your bands plan in a good year...

Everybody know that when Greggs was over SU, they marched 128( 4 lines of 32 for the slow people), whether it be a home game or an away game. THAT WHAT YOU ALL DRILLS WERE CHARTED FOR! As with most bands back in the day, the ideal number is 128. Everytime you guys emptied the stands to take the field, the entire 128 would be out on the field, while you all probably had 6 to 10 alternates sitting in the stands. My eyes do not deceive me. So where are you getting this magical number that everytime SU travels to an away game that Doc took a HEAPING number of instrumentalist WAY over 128? Please stop with the foolery..........

Who said GSU put 275 on the field? GSU marched 225 on the field in 2004 and the rest were reserves and all GSU shows aren't charted for 128, i waqs student directed and trust me i know what i know because i was around the staff 24/7. Don't have to lie about the size, just go on youtube and type in 2004 Grambling Band and you will see the proof for yourself. Don't have to lie.

Hello!

Too Many Distractions

The Matter at Hand: WE have to give back to our universities and to the programs therein. If you aren't writing a check to help Southern buy meals and gas, move on.

TP you are correct. What the administration of SU has done is PRIORITIZE. PWC band programs NEVER travel the full band unless it is paid for by the event...

Yall on some other isht... In here arguing over numbers and whether a band travels to games or not...

I'mma say it like this. Some of yall know me, and those who know me know I don't bullisht on these bands..

Southern has worked very hard to be able to travel as well as they have (over the years). In that regard, they ARE special, because most of our bands don't travel to all of the games. But they're dealing with dwindling resources just like everybody else, so in that regard, they AREN'T any more special than anybody else.

I do understand the 'suggestion' that a smaller 'travelling band' may be an alternative to NOT being able to take the whole band. HBCUs are going to have to learn to adapt to the changing economic times. The stand/field battles that we're accustomed to MIGHT BE coming to an end. And if so, we all have to adapt.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing a 'pep band' of sorts attend EVERY road game (at least), especially if the funds won't allow the full band to travel. 'Some' band is almost always better than 'no' band. Yanno? I've been to a few high school games here in Dallas where the visiting team only brought percussion and tubas (and left the rest at the house).

But I have faith that the 'powers that be' in Baton Rouge will leave no stone unturned in finding funding for the Jukes to travel. I expect to see them in Jackson. Just like the Injuns expect to see the Jukes on the Reservation. And I'm hopeful they can make the game in Shreveport.

But whatever the outcome is, we all have to face the prospect that the 'marching band sport' must evolve in order to remain relevant in these tough economic times..

That's my $0.13.......

I'd like to see the Jukebox get a smaller travel size band to play for probabilities (of being in attendance) sake. One that's not obligated to go on the field...but, just be there in support of the football team.

Id take a 100-120 Jukebox over "no band". Heck, I'd take it over most of the full-band riff raff out here.

SUPER LOGICAL and solution-oriented post.

In an 11 game season, the 100 performs at 7 or 8 games every year. We also generally perform at 1 or 2 BOTBs as well as other special engagements. This year we'll be performing at 7 games with the possiblity of an 8th late in the season.

Yes we like it.

Y'all sure as hell aint bring 225 to the Bayou Classic OR the BotB for that matter. And, before you argue, iJUST watched the season dvd from 2004 2days ago. No, I didn't count each person, but you arguing that it was 225 will REALLY only lessen my opinion of the Forld Wamed.

And, of those 7 or 8, how many are HOME GAMES, and/or classics? How many "normal" away games does FAMU go to? Nearly NONE. Aint nobody tryin' to spend all that money to pay for the whole persian army, (Gay-ass Xerxes included) to come to a damn football game!

200 in the actual drill and percussion and cnets coming from sideline was 225 on the field lol. It's funny how peeps think they know more than people in the band. smh

lol @ normal away games. Like I said, you're guaranteed to see the 100 perform at 7 or 8 games a year. This year it will probably be 8 out of 11. I could be wrong but I'll assume that's right on par with most bands. *shrugs*
