Is Eugene ranked in the Top 10 of All SWAC Quarterbacks?

1) Doug Williams
2) Steve McNair
3)??? Is it Kent from J-State or Bruce Eugene from GSU or Kendrick Nord from GSU or Eric Randal from Southern

Rank SWAC quatersbacks...

And are the numbers the only thing you use when you judge great quarterbacks???

And with his stealer year should Eugene be a Heisman candidate or better yet is he NFL caliber?
 
I wouldn't exactly rank them because of the following:

1. Although Steve McNair has the records and brought mainstream media attention to Alcorn, the number of championships he has compared to Doug leans toward Doug.

2. Although Doug won championships, he had far superior talent to Steve and any other SWAC QB afterward.

3. Bruce won SWAC championships, but (like Peyton Manning in college) he might get knocked for it if he does not beat Southern this season. Bruce has to lead Grambling to a win over Southern to truly cement his status in the SWAC QB panthenon.

4. Eric Randall was a good field general, but not as physically talented as Bruce or Darnell Kennedy.

5. Robert Kent needed was a strong senior year, but we all know how that happened. NOTE: Don't throw that mechanics and semantics crap in the Kent discussion, because a whole lot of NFL QBs came in with flaws in their mechanics and whatever (decision-making) and were given chance(s).

6. Randy Hymes' athleticism and versatility might have cost him. I thought he was a good QB at Grambling, he just needed more reps.

7. Quincy Richard and Thomas Ricks put together would've been a great QB: Richard's decision-making and Ricks' physical attributes. But the only knock on them was that they only had one season to show what they can do.

I ranked the best this way. On what they did in the SWAC during their stay and not NFL stuff.


1. Steve McNair. Mac carried Alcorn by himself damn near. No one is even close.

2. Willie Totten. Best aerial display the SWAC has seen with Jerry Rice and those Valley Wrs.

3. Doug Williams. One of the best athletes ever in the SWAC.

4. Bruce Eugene. Based on what he has done in his career he is definitely a SWAC legendary QB

5. James Harris..... Don't have the numbers. But he was one of the best
6. Darnell Kennedy........ I think this kid does not get his due credit.
7. T Jackson. ... has made a believer out of me
8 Kendrick Nord....... I always thought he was a good Qb at GSU
9 Robert Kent...... would be higher if he had not endured Bell
10 Eric Randall. My favorite SU Qb.


I did not use numbers to judge the Qbs either, not entirely. Or else Kent would be higher.

As far as NFL caliber talent. I think Bruce is a bit too short and the weight is a concern. Leftwich is a big boy, but he is 6'5. So is Daunte. I just think the NFL is too fast of a game for Bruce. Mac, Doug and James Harris all had one thing in common. They could move. Bruce is nimble for his size, but he aint as athletic enough to play in the NFL. His arm is NFL caliber.

Heisman consideration. No way. He needed to have a great game against Washington State. Even in a loss he needed to shred the WSU defense like Culpepper did Nebraska when he played them or like McNair did when he played supposingly tougher competition. That game against Youngstown State sealed the deal for Mac being a top 5 draft choice. Also he is not in the top 5 talent in the NCAA. That belongs to Reggie Bush, Laurence Maroney, Matt Leinert, Vince Young and some others are right there with great seasons. Bruce has had a great year and I wish him the best. Seems like a nice kid too. Hopefully somebody may give him a shot in the NFL as a free agent. If he would just lose that weight. Get down to 220 or so that would help.

How could you slight Darnell Kennedy and list some of those QBs you did? :confused:

Since his time, nobody has come close to throwing with the precision that he did.
 
Bruce has a great arm, but he is too big even a 3rd team QB in the NFL. I can't picture Bruce under the center in the NFL at his size. Although I have seen what those agents can do to players to get them in shape for the combine. I'm sure they can get him to lose 30 to 40 pounds in 4 or 5 months.

Bruce is definitely top 10 all time among SWAC QBs. He's definitely behind McNair, Totten, and Williams, probably behind Harris, and not as good a pure passer as Kennedy. As far as his Heisman possibilities, well let's just say all the efforts should be focused on getting him the Payton Award. I think he has NFL talent without question, but his height, weight, and accuracy are all question marks. There has been plenty of discussion on TSPN on how tall Eugene is, and even if he is 6'1", that's still on the short side for NFL QBs. And even at 6'1, 250 is a ton of weight (no pun intended) on his frame. I know there are larger QBs in the league, Culpepper plays around 260 and McNair until recently played around 240. But the difference is they are both 6'4", and their weight is "solid". He has to get down to under 230 at the very least, and probably below 220. While he has the ability to make any throw in the playbook, he can be scattershot at times and his passes have the tendency to sail on occassion. All that noted, his talent is undeniable, I wouldn't be shocked to see him go as a 2nd day draft selection, but he'll definitely be in somebody's training camp next summer. I know JR noted his nimbleness, but less athletic players have been successful at that posistion. Scrambling QBs get a lot of pub, but it's more important in my opinion to be mobile inside the pocket, to feel where the rush is coming from and move to avoid it while making plays down the field.

MH...i wasn't exactly listing QBs (Go back and read my post mane) but since you got me on to Darnell (my fav Hornets QB-yes DK was better than T. Jackson),

Darnell had all the tools--but an injury here, an academic thing there, a lack of a supporting cast other places...kinda mitigated Darnell's career...
 
I started to put Quincy #4 because Rice made Toten look so good! :lol:

Also, JROCK needs a QB that can see over the OL! :lol:

Stats don't mean a thing. Quincy is smarter, quicker and taller than Brugene. :lol:

It doesn't matter. He is still the 5th (maybe the 4th) best QB. You put Q in those chuck and duck offenses that Valley & Gram has run, you would have received the same eye popping numbers. In 2003 Q showed you all at the Silver Aniversary of the BC exactly who was the league MVP, BCF MVP and the MVP on the field.
 
Bruce Eugene stats are basically in 3 years. He played very sparingly as a freshman.

41 games played
34 games started
26-8 as a stater
11,980 passing yards (3rd all swac)
119 passing TD's (tied for 2nd All swac)
785 completions
17 rushing td's
1,126 rushing yards

you say all that and just think, after Kennedy's last game@ ASU, in the history of the SWAC, only 2 QBs had thrown for more yards than him.

That's the sad thing about it...he's put up those numbers, despite all I've mentioned...and still doesn't get the same mention as other SWAC QB's...

I love bruce to death cause he is the best passer the swac will see in some time including doug williams. Playing in a 4&5 wide offense will get you big numbers also. I would love to see bruce in the single wing or wing t and see what would his numbers be. Bruce had his chance to shine against superior talent but did not do so. Bruce has to win these remaining games to cement his legacy. He has the numbers but his performance on a biggest stage is shaky at best.

ummm I shole disagree with that. Bruce throws for a lot of yards, but by no means would I say he is the best passer. Last Saturday's game was the first time I saw some crisp passes from Eugene (I even posted about it in my award-winning Random Thoughts). The times before that I've seen Eugene, (on television and in person) his passing was not too sharp at all. A lot of lollipops and ducks that the receivers just happen to come down with, but that dont make them great passes.

Richard was a good qb for Southern, but he was basically a "one hit wonder", or as Pete Richardson himself put it, a "one year" wonder.

Darnell Kennedy, on the other hand was a great qb under THREE DIFFERENT COACHES, and COUNTLESS diferent offensive coordinators and offensive systems.

He should definetly be above Robert Kent, and probably below only Doug Williams, Steve McNair, and Willie Totten as far as those who played within the last 30 years or so.

Quincy Richard doesn't even deserve to be in this conversation.
