Per Renae Baker, President of the Sonic Boom Alumni Association:

Mr. Dowell Taylor, Director of Bands has requested to be relieved of his duties as Director of The Jackson State University "Sonic Boom of the South." Marching Band effective June 30, 2015. Mr. Taylor will remain with the program as Director of Bands with the responsibility of coordinating all instrumental ensembles in the Department of Music including the Marching band. The new director will be named soon after the search process has been completed.

I would like to thank DT for his time with the band.

Now that schools like SU and FAMU have new and younger directors, is he like one of the older directors out there amongst HBCUs?

FAMU's Director isn't young, so isn't SU's Director. Taylor became a Band Director in his 20's, that's young.

Wow. Hate to see my man Dowell step down. But that band director job is hard work and sometimes it goes unappreciated. I remember asking Mr. Jackson why give it up. He told me it is a young man's game. I can definitely understand.

Nah, Taylor was in his 30s. He graduated Callaway in the early/mid 70s I believe. He was around 30-32 age frame when he came to JSU in 1984. That was still younger heck for those times. You didn't get band programs like a JSU that young.

Where is Staggalee83?

I would imagine Prof Lee at TxSU, Newsom definitely at Howard as he was in Doc's first band at SU in 69, Panell at Grambling have to all be older than Taylor. I am sure there are a few others. Blake Gaines at Valley ain't that young. He is in his 50s.

As Band Director at Kentucky State, Taylor was in his 20's! I think Taylor's birthday is in August? When he come to JSU in July 1984, Taylor was 29! I'm done with this age thing!

Good chance Rod Little may be the next Director of Bands for the boom

The Boom will be in good hands with Rod Little as Band Director!

50 is not old.

JSU hasn't offically released a press release, so this post may not be true?

True.. but I hope it's true.. LOL Im about tired of Taylor.

Taylor ain't going anywhere! He's going to be the Director of Bands. Roderick Little will become the Band Director, Taylor's apprentice.

If, Dr. O’ Neill Sanford wants the position, he's the most qualified on Taylor's staff to replace Taylor, he may bump Little, if he wants the position, but he's not a JSU alumnus.

Sit down TP. Taylor is good folks and a helluva Director. I only wish he had stayed the band director through the 90s instead of stepping down after the Motown 30 deal. He was in his prime then.

Well, he is out of touch now... He needs to go "sat" down!

That's cool. I hope Little learned a lot from Taylor. He has the band looking and sounding good! The band has just got boring.

I see Taylor finally gets the title he always coveted. Him and Doc Greggs always conversed about that. But he couldn't be Dir of Bands and have a separate department like Doc Greggs had at SU because of Dr. James was running the Music Dept. and had all the power. Hence the beginning of their fallout. Good for Dowell. Can't keep a good man down.

Probably better for yall to give it to Little. O'Neill is old school and has too much SU and Norfolk State in him probably for the liking of JSU folks. TP would really be mad if that happened.

Man, damn all that! What does Sarge have to say about this?

Sarge too busy arguing with Get Ready about the NFL playoffs on Facebook. Still talking about how the Cowboys cheated the Lions or something. LOL.
