Josh Pastner, the 24-year-old administrative assistant from Arizona, has found himself back in Houston trying to lobby for the Prairie View job.

he's on the black radio station as I type. The things people do to get their name out. He sounds too hyperactive to me.
 



According to the Chronicle, he was named a finalist for our position last year too but when you ask the AD about him, he'll tell you he never even interviewed the guy for the position and the Houston Chronicle never even talked to him about Pastner.

Money, a father's influence and media backing at it's best. I truly hope PV isn't considering him. He was bragging about coaching his AAU team for the past 8 years. :smh:
 
I gave myself a birthday present today (3/29) and contacted McClelland about Pastner. I basically stated that I would have a problem with him as the coach.

I believe everyone from PV would have a problem with him. Summer league coaching is not enough experience for college ball, if that was the case I need to throw my hat into the ring. I did give tips to my son's team while their inept coach was out.
 
one of candidates is a Baylor Assistant who spent time coaching AAU kids. He probably ended up at Baylor to recruit Houson.

He would be a great fit at PV if he has a track record of sending his kids to PV. However, he does not.
 
Word to the wise.

All you Panthers should lobby for your candidate and express your feelings on this board. I talked to your AD at the baseball / track meet at PV this weekend and he reads these boards.
 
Why doesn't this kid cut his teeth on a JUCO, DII or DIII school first? You don't just walk up with no head coaching experience and say, "I want to coach a DI basketball team." Prodigy or not, he hasn't paid dues and proven himself by winning on a college level.
Stand strong PV.

Pastner Wants Black College Job

It appears to me that JOSH PASTNER, who works at the University of Arizona, where he graduated, feels that he is only qualified to work at black colleges. He applied for the TSU job after long time coach BOB MORELAND was fired. He has applied for the Prairie View job. Why hasn?t he applied for the University of Arkansas job? There have been over 15 college positions open within the past year and a half. With the qualifications that PASTNER says he has, he should have a head coaching position by now.

I feel that Prairie View needs a coach with a proven background as a winner and that can only be proven by the coaches record. Most coaches that are looking for a job have a strong conversation on how they can produce winners and bring in top athletes and how they can turn a program around when they have never been a head coach before. They come with a lot of promises.

Prairie View, according to athletics director CHARLES MCCELLAND, is going in a different direction. I hope that direction isn?t hiring a coach for on-the-job training. As a graduate and former athlete at Prairie View when the school was a powerhouse in all sports, I would like to see the school return to those days. Prairie View did not get its great records by hiring coaches to learn on the job.
The late BILLY NICKS had won two national football titles at Morris Brown College prior to coming to Prairie View.
TSU hired RONNIE COURTNEY because he had a track record for winning. COURTNEY had won back-to-back state titles at Willowridge. He had experienced winning as a head coach. He did not need any on-the-job training. RAY MCCALLUM has won prior to coming to UH. UH would not hire a coach to give him on-the-job training. I don?t know of any college with a sound athletic program would take such a chance.

I have nothing against PASTNER. I never met the young man. He comes across as a fine young man. But I feel that to coach in college, a person must have some strong coaching experience at least as a first assistant, but more so, as a head coach.
I feel that high schools that have a great winning tradition would hesitate to hire a head coach without heading coaching experience.
 
From a current PV student's perspective

Pastner is simply not qualified. I mean, look at his bio. NO head coaching experience. No assistant coaching experience. He was the tape man. I feel the same as some else when they stated earlier that at least 15 head coaching positions have been available. As good as he is SUPPOSED to be, he would have landed in one of those spots. I mean honestly. The guy is barely older than me and has coached an AAU team. YIPEE!!:rolleyes: I just don't feel he would be a good fit in the best interest of the team.

Personally, I like Wise. From a basketball as well as mentor standpoint (which I feel is equally important in SWAC basketball). You can tell when a team is really fired up about playing for their coach. It shows ON THE COURT, which is something Pastner has not seen as a coach.

I have nothing against the guy at all, but just don't feel he is right for PV.

Prairie View, Mr. McCelland Coach Andre Boutte is your Man. He's 38 years old, in 14 years of coaching he has a coaching record of 376-102. A winning percentage of 79%. He has 3 state championships and been to the state finals three other times. Most of all he wants to be a coach on the college level. I think if Coach Boutte becomes the new basketball coach at PV, he automatically becomes one of the better coaches in the SWAC, he's just that GOOD.

With Coach Boutte at PV recruiting in the Houston Area get that much tougher. The University of Houston and Texas Southern has both added good young coaches. I see no reason why PV shouldn't hire a good coach of their own, like Coach Boutte.

With Coach Boutte at PV, it gives Prairie View the upper hand on recruits in the Golden Triangle Area.

For Boutte, the state tournament appearance was his second straight at Ozen and seventh overall in a 14-season head-coaching career that has produced a 376-102 record (.787 percentage) and three state championships (one at Ozen and two at Port Arthur Lincoln).



"Anytime a head coach receives an honor such as coach of the year, the first thing you need to do is give thanks to your fellow coaches and to the players," said Boutte, whose Panthers lost to Dallas Lincoln 71-51 in the 4A title game. "They are the ones essentially responsible for the success we had."



Ozen's success this season came from a 32-3 record that came on the heels of the 2000-2001 Panthers' 36-0 run to the Class 4A championship. The loss to Dallas Lincoln was Ozen's only one to a Texas team over the past two seasons.



"I have been fortunate to have had a a lot of success at an early age," said the 38-year-old Boutte, who began his head-coaching career at Kountze. "You have to take each season one-by-one, because the makeup of your team changes based upon the players you have in your program. Therefore, your coaching philosophies and styles may change a little from year to year based upon your talent availability."



Although the opportunity is yet to present itself, Boutte said he would some day like to test his mettle as a college coach.



"When I first started, my goal was to become a Division I head coach, and that's still my goal," said Boutte, who played on state championship teams at Hebert in 1980 and 1981. "I still work each and every day here as if I'll be here forever.



"This is my job and a great job, one that I love very much. If I keep working hard and if the team continues to have success, I have to believe that eventually that opportunity (to coach at the college level) will come."

What has Coach Wise at Hightower won?

Prairie View, be wise, don't hire Coach Wise.
 
You heard it from Courtney's mouth, Boutee is going to ride out Kendrick Perkins. He will not be available until next year at the earliest.

You all are benefiting from his team though.

Courtney's immediate success has opened the door for black high school coaches
 



Wise built a program from the ground up at Hightower. He knows how to start from scratch unlike some folks.

Brother be wise, don't do it. What did Hightower do in the playoffs last year?

Boutte's record as a head coach should tell you he knows what he's doing. A 79% winning percentage in 14 years. Don't seem like he has had one lucky year to me. Yes he has Perkins a 6-10 center, but he's been winnning long before Perkins showed up at Ozen.

A NBA team is not gonna hire Boutte. I don't know what you are afaid of go offer Boutte the job, he just might take it, you never know until you ask.
 
Boutee has been at PA Lincoln and you know they were not short of talent the past few years. They always seem to have a strong team but it is odd he jumps ship to Ozen because he knew the talent base was going to drop.

If Boutee applied I would like it but did he?
 
To hell with who applied, If there is a qualified candidate what's wrong with PV pursuing him. The big school don't sit around and see who's gonna apply for the job. Do yall think Bobby Knight call Texas Tech or did Texas Tech call Bobby Knight? Prairie View is not a high school, it's a Division I basketball program, don't treat as a high school program. I think Boutte is a qualified candidate and if he didn't apply I see nothing wrong with PV pursuing him (If PV feel he's worthy of being their new basketball coach).
 
Pear Orchard could be Prairie View's if they select Andre Boutte as their new basketball coach. The Pear Orchard is a black neighborhood in Beaumont, TX. Many great people has come out of the Pear Orchard, but it's also know for producing a lot of great athletes. The Pear Orchard is comparable to neighborhoods like Third Ward, Harlm Clark, Hunters Glen, Quail Run, ect...

I wish TSU would recruit more in the Beaumont Area (Golden Triangle). Rumor has it TSU's basketball coach is recruiting a kid from Beaumont Ozen (Pear Orchard). Now if I only can get Coach Thomas to Beaumont.
