  • Divorce is more common among Black women, at 38.9%, and Black men, at 38.7%, than in other racial groups.
  • 30.8% is the average divorce rate for Black marriages, compared to the 42% national average.

I'm divorced as of 12/24 and I'm noticing a lot of people that I meet have been divorced. Several of my close friends have divorced within the last year. Is it that marriage is not important as it used to be? In my case, I think Job titles, control and money were a factor. My ex and I both have great salaries, but she makes more than me. I think over time, she felt that she was independent and didn't need me. I'm good but just something I noticed lately. My ex's close friend from college that she used to hang with recently divorced her husband. She made a lot more than her husband and told him that she didn't need him. He and I are good friends and that brother is living the single life like no other. He's a Vice President of a tech company is flying all over the world living life. He's not paying child support either. Me on the other hand, I'm still paying child support until my daughter graduates high school.

Marriage is about duty, honor, responsibility and prospects. it is not about happiness. Only person responsible for your happiness is the person you see in the mirror. Like I always say on this page and in life "A man will sacrifice his happiness for his family. A woman will sacrifice her family for her happiness.".
 
I would say it’s pretty common for women to engage in hypergamy these days. If one doesn’t pick up on that early or choose to ignore it, you’re attempting to build a house on a very weak foundation. Unrealistic expectations seem to be the rule of the day. Further, if you knowingly choose to have a relationship with financially undisciplined women, inevitably your house will come tumbling down and you my friend have facilitated it (simp). Lastly I will say, be judicious in what and who you invest in, keep a healthy emergency fund, and let no human being get you off of your game/gain (both applicable).

And honestly, these numbers don't really show the full picture. There's so many people out there where the only reason they haven't divorced is for religion, financial reasons or kids. My ex from college is probably the best example of it that I've seen. From the outside, you'd think it was a great situation. Both with high five figure salaries and their own side businesses. Big house in an area where the average HHI is over 200K. Nice cars, 2 kids and she's absolutely miserable... or at least that's the image that the portrays when she sneaks and texts to "catch up" from the second phone she keeps hidden at a second location. They have too much money tied up in the same interests and nobody wants to take a loss in a divorce. They just maintain the facade for family, friends and the kids but that marriage has been over for 5 years.

Lot more folks with that story than would ever want to admit it. I've seen it all through my own family for the last 15 years. They are diehard pentecostal folks that have leadership positions in the church. Their lives outside of those few hours a week in church are in absolute shambles. Some of em haven't slept in the same bed in 15 years. Some of the uncles have outside kids that they managed to hide from their wives all of their lives.

Still don't know to this day...truck drivers. Family in Georgia, family in Texas where they know him as a totally different name. When he's in Georgia, he's the head deacon with his wife on his arm with his kids on the second pew. When he's in Texas though? He's the boyfriend that doesn't really want to get married, but has a 10+ year girlfriend and 2 kids lol. Both sides think that he's "home" when he's there and on the road when he's not.

The real fucked up part is, I had no desire to get married for real because this was the shit I used to see as a kid. People that proclaimed to be so happy in their marriage but in reality, it was mostly a facade. And to blame myself too, once my family member got sick and I had to leave the Northeast and come back home, I moved to Atlanta as a 21/22ish dude that jumped straight into corporate. The amount of married 35+ women that I had dealings with throughout those years was just...crazy. Or even worse, my freshman year at Bama State, I met a married grad chick that would let me use the car her husband bought almost everyday. Didn't even know she was married.

Honest question, what percentage of people that have been married for 15+ years do you think neither spouse has ever cheated... or ever wanted to? Now add that to the already high divorce rate and it starts getting spooky.
