Black Colleges Disappoint Again on NFL Draft Weekend

Why have HBCU football prospects and the overall HBCU football pool of talent dropped off so dramatically in the last several years? One reason I think the quality of talent has diminished is that HBCU football programs have not kept up with other similar size programs by investing in their programs to make them more attractive to young high school football players.


Many FCS schools, the same level SWAC and MEAC schools are members, have invested in their programs in areas of strength, conditioning, nutrition and football infrastructure. The same can’t be said for HBCU FCS programs.

HBCU's are having successful pro days, etc. so the kids are being exposed....There are a lot of factors only people in the organization can tell you that the average fan will never know

I've heard the agents play a part in players being drafted, chances of being a free agent vs. interest in being drafted, background checks, etc...

What do you consider to be a successful pro day?

That's what I think about when I read one of the articles each year. Yall act like other FCS conferences are just putting out draft picks like the SEC. The NFL Draft is not great to any kid regardless of the FCS program he comes out of. These 'whoa is me" poor SWAC articles after each draft are something else. I am not dissing you Ken because I respect freelance articles, but we are an FCS conference that no longer puts that many kids in the pros. We get it as we do every year around this time when the two to three brothers who choose to bring it back up pick up their pens and pads to remind us.
 
When SEC schools get players they are the best of the best. The school isn't getting players drafted, it's their talent.

I think now with amount of money being spent its a little of both. Guys have talent and school/conferences with the money to insure they are seen.

Truth be told I wish Oprah, Magic, and a some former black NFL players would assist HBCUs in getting more of our games on television.

Why would they?? How many of them are from HBCUs?? What former NFL or even current NFL player would do that and rick getting blackballed (If that was to happen)?

Why would you fight to put those games on TV and MAYBE cause your former college to lose out on a player? Or a draft pick?

Magic and Oprah could do it but they already know no ONE will watch. Especially if they are playing at the same time another big name school is playing. College basketball maybe but not football with too many choices during the season.

It's sad that some hate the skin they are in. A-holes tend to focus on the MEAC and SWAC like other FCS conferences are throwing kids in the draft. smh

dude you think scouts use TV to judge talent :lol: . If you have talent they will find you.

I agree. We have a lot of talent in the SWAC and at our HBCUs. We do need to do a better job at exposing our Black athletes who play for our HBCUs. And we also need to expose them to our schools, and convince them that if you can run a 4.2 at ND, you can run a 4.2 at Alcorn, or SCSU, or Tuskegee. Talent is talent, and it will excel at any school.

But I do think some of the problem is coaching.......some of our coaches are the problem, and have become too accustomed to mediocrity.

If a kid knows that he is going to play on television, if a kid feels that he will be seen, versus using the recruiting tactic..."Scouts find talent play your heart out...." That's not working. Names like Doug Williams is not working.

What other things will bring this guy to your school to play football?

Ok this kid can run fast...will he be seen more on television running a 4.2 at Alcorn versus a 4.2 at Notre Dame?

This falls squarely on the shoulders of our SIDs. I said this when I first joined this board and was challenged...I did not mind the challenge because I know the value of keeping our guys in front of the scouts and teams. The old SIDs back in the day understood this and they worked their butts off with far fewer resources. Once an email list is built today it is almost write it once and press send.

I got your point, Founder, I was more so agreeing with SUJTID about the talent aspect. :swink:

And I also said that we need to expose these athletes to our schools; start at an early age (little league and middle school). Also, I wish HBCUs had summer camps or mini camps for young athletes (I don't know if any do this or not).


And it goes back to what I said about coaching.....one of the GLF members made a good point over in the LL...he said it's no use being a good coach if you can't recruit worth a damn, and some coaches can't do this. They not only have become used to mediocre performance from players, but don't coach to THEIR full potential, and don't recruit to their full potential.
 
I thought it was about the money pool. If a team can get an excellent player without spending any money they get a real deal. You don't have to draft a player from a HBCU because it is a business decision and if our guys get the opportunity to camp they will beat out a lot of drafted players.

Definitely true. If you can land a player and he can actually start/contribute as a rookie that's good business. Arian Foster is a prime example of this.

I honestly think that if Cox gets into camp and can get coached up, he will land on the 53 man roster. Same for Hamilton and the defensive player from JSU. Too much talent to be over looked.

I was on Youtube looking at a AH highlight clip of his 22.5 sacks and even some of the Cowboys fans were like "How did he not get drafted?"

Like a certain SWAC coach who played a hurt QB in a championship game over a good back up QB who had won the game on his shoulders two weeks prior to go the SCG. :shame:
