The Bayoo will always be the most famous because of NBC. However, I?ve been to the Atlanta Classic, Florida Classic and the Bayoo Classic. Truthfully, they are all about the same. 70,000+ people at each game. Step show, parades, concerts. celebrities, etc.

most people attending the ATL Classic dont have ties to either school and probably could care less who wins the game. This is more of an event than a heated rivalry. Its played in a state where neither school is located. The parade is not large or long. When I was a student at TSU, nobody really mentioned FAMU as a rivalry, all the students just wanted to go to ATL that weekend because it was ATL.
 
That is only because your team (TSU)was so sorry over the last two decades. The only thing that you all looked forward to was the after parties. However, having grown up on FAMU football. I know that one of our most hated rivalries is TSU. It is more of a gathering now because of the ATL and lack of important wins and painful losses due to conference affiliation. But, I am relatively sure that if you ask any old school Big Blue Tiger who are TSU's rivals they will almost certainly include FAMU.

jstate83, I think you are referring to former Alabama coach Bill Curry. First of all, a lot of Bama fans did not like him because he had no Bear Bryant "connections". In other words, he never played or coached for The Bear, or had any other connections to the University of Alabama. And yes you are correct, Curry was ran out of Tuscaloosa because he flunked Auburn 101.He never beat Auburn. No coach will keep his job in Tuscaloosa if he cannot beat Auburn.

DaHill can?t speak for us. He was never True Blue. He was a Bulldog in a Tiger outfit. :) TSU & FAMU is a rivalry, period.

ViperPhi, I wouldn?t say last two decades, but the in the last ten years FAMU has dominated the series because of Billy Joe. He is 8-2 against TSU, and is the only FAMU coach besides Ken Riley to have a winning record against TSU. If it wasn?t for BJ the FAMU-TSU serious would mirror our series with Southern.

..And even with all that, Curry had the Tide 8 points away from a national championship when they lost the 1990 Sugar Bowl to Miami.

I think the thing that make the ATL Classic so good is great advertising, corportate sponsorship, regional t.v. and the Marching 100. I passed by the Georgia Dome friday night and they are already flashing the game and time in bright lights. Many people discount the fact that over 1 million blacks reside in Metro Atlanta. Many of these people have above average incomes which mean entertainment money to spend. If something is marketed correctly to the AA community in the ATL it can be very profitable. Don't come here with advertisment and a counterfeit product or you will loose your shirt (like a lot of people did for the 96 olympics). Your potential prospective customer is astute and a bad product travels through the ATL like a fire out of control (ask the atlanta hawks).

The long and short of it though is that the ATL Classic is not close in intensity to the BC. Has the ATL Classic arrived to the status of one of HBCU top 3 Classics?.........You better believe it. If you haven't been to The ATL Classic the last two years, in the words of another great hood philosopher.........."You better ask somebody."

The BC was the most famous before NBC. I mean, what other calssic was more intense, or bigger for that matter, than the Bayou before NBC picked it up???

Ohio State and Michigan always comes up on everyone?s top 3, because the winner of that game usually went to the Rose Bowl to play for a national championship. From 1920 to present Grambling (12), Tennessee State (12), FAMU(12), and Southern (9) have combined for 45 of 83 black college national championships, so throughout our history the winner of the GSU vs. SU or TSU vs. FAMU were more than likely to be crowned champion, IMO making these two the top rivalries.

Here are my top five:

1. GSU vs. SU
2. TSU vs. FAMU
3. ASU vs. AAMU
4. JSU vs. Alcorn
5. Howard vs. Hampton

Here are my top five classics
1. Bayoo Classic Great city to go party, can WALK down the street with a beer in your hand and pass a cop and everything is all good, not to mention a great instate battle who?s winner will more than likely win the SWAC.
2. Atlanta Classic Great city to hold this classics because the many clubs and restaurants. In addition, Atlanta is full of FAMU and TSU grads. Just like the Bayoo the Atlanta Classic has turned into a Celebrity filled event.
3. Magic City Classic The battle of Alabama. Great rivalry, but the city of Birmingham can?t compare the New Orl or the Atl as far as entertainment after the game.
4. Orlando Classic Battle of Florida. Although the series is very one sided BCC has won the last two. Orlando is about the same as Birmingham entertainment wise.
5. Circle City Classic The official classic for everyone in the Midwest.

True that........The BC had in excess of 76,000 fans on a couple of occassions. Also, NBC was not the first network to show the game. It is pretty hard working in Louisiana and being at the losing end of the classic. You all would be suprised at how the smacking in Louisiana is year round when it comes down to this game. Please believe that many people take this game personal. :lmao:

What does entertainment AFTER THE GAME, have to do with the intensity during the game itself? Just a question. You needn't read anymore into it than that, but I imagine some of the other posters would ask the same thing.

Throughout this thread, posters have discussed what they think is the best Classic. I simply ranked imo, the top five HBCU rivalries and top five Classics in one post. IMO, when comparing Classic?s the city that it?s held in holds a lot of weight.

I wish I could smack back but, u got me. Grambling got us in the series 18-21-1 and they blew us out in our last meeting. We need to reinstate this series. But the rest of the SWAC :smash:

I went to the ATL Classic last year (2003) for the first time and I must say that shat was boring as hell. The bands spend the whole second quarter playing either sectional fanfares or battling to see how many times they can play "I Ain't Neva Scared" without being interrupted a putrid football game. I must have seen about 10 punts and the score was like 7-3. I'm glad I left after halftime.

Defensive Battles have an ability to sap the interest level of a casual on looker who really could care less who wins. It seems as though State Trooper had more of a vested interest in what the bands were playing in the stands than the game. However, I will say this; the FAMU vs TSU game atmosphere was much more intense & electric when the game was at Bobby Dodd (Georgia Tech's Stadium), and when the series was a home and home series. I will never forget the first year of the classic when the tickets were oversold and people were hanging over the rafters.
 
YEAH ,FAMU HAS A HISTORY OF OVERSELLING TICKETS. REMEMBER SU GAME 1997. WHEN BUS LOADS OF THE JAGUAR NATION WERE TURNED AROUND AT THE GATE , EVEN THOUGH THEY HAD TICKETS. THIS IS PROBABLY THE TRUE REASON WHY WE DON'T PLAY RIGHT NOW. I REALLY HOPE WE CAN SOME WAY CONTINUE THIS SERIES.
 
O well, Get over it!!! LOL Just Joking, but this is yet just another moment that rivalries are made of. By the way, y'all are just mad because the Snakes dashed your hopes of an undefeated season by the tune of 33-3. I want this series back in the worst way simply because y'all got the last lick!!! I miss all of the SMACK leading up to game day between the fans , the bands, and the FAN PAGES.
 
Furthermore Payback is a MUG. If I can recall SU has made a habit of placing the visiting team's fans and band over in the far corner of the stadium ever since I can remember. I heard the complaints from Jackson State fans on several occasions.
