"From the start of the game till 1908, the number of deaths and injuries from the game rose, peaking in 1908 with 33. This was the driving force behind the changes to the game. From 1905 till 1912 the game completely changed in appearance from the free-for-all rugby style of play to the set play and formation game controlled by the referees.
When the number of deaths peaked at 33, President Theodore Roosevelt ordered that the game be changed or that it would be banished by Presidential edict. There were a number of Colleges and Universities that also banned the game because of the violence. The game was changed.
To control the game, 13 schools met to form the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 1905. The rule changes enacted set the number of players on the line of scrimmage, banned certain formations, Made certain types of roughness a penalized action, and changed the fundamental aspects of the game.
Further changes in the rules in 1912 would forever again change the look of football from the down-in-the-trenches, gut wrenching runs up the middle to the run-and-gun and pass in every direction the game is today. The rule change of 1912 legalized the forward pass. When the forward pass was introduced in 1905, there were so many restrictions and consequences from using the forward pass that few teams ventured to use it. Before 1912, you couldn't throw more than 5 yards either side of the middle of the field, a pass caught in the endzone was a turnover, an incomplete pass was a turnover. All this changed in 1912."

I guess none of y'all ever heard of the short-lived Catholics vs. Convicts rivarly of the early 90s with Notre Dame playing Miami (**sighs as he remembers the fight in the tunnel that one year)...now that was a rivalry...
Now on sheer numbers I agree it's OSU/Michigan and it's a toss-up between the Iron Bowl, the Civil War (Oregon-Oregon St.) and Bayou Classic for dividing the loyalty of one state's citizens....
My favorite rivalry name however is "Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate" (Georgia-Georgia Inst. of Tech)
I seen some of y'all went :topic: with labeling some HBCU "Classics" as rivalry games...
To me a rivalry cannot be a one-sided series (GSU-PV for ex.)..it has to be close in head-to-head and incite deep emotions in people as the game draws near. Now for me, some of the best HBCU rivalries include ...

Oh yeah... I know Army/Navy is the most tradtion-laced rivalry...but is it also the most somber one too? I guess it's how they market the game...
but back to what i was saying...
JState 83...My cousin played baseball for Coach Braddy back in the early 90s..and he'd always came home talkin' bout the Soul Bowl (still don't know why they changed the game name to the CCC)...
it's the same way I go around talkin' about the BC, I mean the unofficial SWAC championship game four out of the last five years of division play...
Rivalries, good rivalries with some degree of dislike for the other team, will get the fans riled up..
Oh yeah..You know you got a good rivarly when you can just mention the date of the game and people know what you're talking about... (I think we always used to play J-State like the 2nd or 3rd sat. in October, with the exception of a few seasons)

Now a personal memory was when I was in Tally for the last SU-FAMU game and we won in OT..man the looks on the Rattler fans faces when the SU students and fans stormed the field ...no wonder why the sprinklers came on in like 3 minutes :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

The SOUL BOWL got changed when the advertising came in and really started backing it. All the students, fans, and grad's still call it the SOUL BOWL. Even most of the people reporting it on the local sportscast's still call it the SOUL BOWL. That will never "change."

if both schools start winning big, TSU and PV could rival big rivalries. In basketball in 2003, a first place matchup attracted 10K easily despite word of mouth advertising..
football has hovered around 30K but a few wins and optimism, you can get into the 40-40K range easily.

A comment regarding BCF Classics and other Games........
I have no doubt in my mind that the MCC would have attendance figures well over 70,000 if they made everyone who entered the stadium sit down for at least 30 minutes and those who set-up in the tailgate area around the stadium to purchase a ticket along with the tailgate spot. The Whitney M. Young classic requires everyone coming into the paking lot and tailgate area to show their tickets before entering the area. If you bought a tailgate spot you had to purchase a ticket to the game as well. "L", I could barely get anywhere near Leigion Field last year before the MCC and this was at 12:00 noon........the kickoff was not until 3:00 pm. There were people everywhere approximately 30.000 - 50, 000 outside the stadium who never came into the game.

SU storming the field is precisely why this rivalry needs to resume in the worst way. :angry: Trust me, the SNAKES have not forgotten this one!!! :angry: I can't wait until this rivalry resumes. These moments are the moments rivalries are made of. 
I really looked forward to the first week in November, and I miss playing the S in the worst way. :smh:
Though I do feel that a game in Mobile would be hype, I feel that the game would lose some of its luster and edge if it were played in Mobile every year. Plus, we turn too many of our Marquis Games into Classics. It should be played in Mobile every 5th year, if at all.
I really looked forward to the first week in November, and I miss playing the S in the worst way. :smh: Though I do feel that a game in Mobile would be hype, I feel that the game would lose some of its luster and edge if it were played in Mobile every year. Plus, we turn too many of our Marquis Games into Classics. It should be played in Mobile every 5th year, if at all.

I agree with you about the first weekend in Nov...but folk smacking our students (I knew some of the cats that stormed the field..one stole a 10-yard line marker from the sideline and brought it back to BR).. is just like the time when i think Clemson students did something on South Carolina's field back in the gap and caused a brawl...
I also agree that we allow our biggest games to eventually get turned into "Classics" when they don't need to be (SU/JSU will be the next victim).. I loved it when we got the Snakes or J-state on the bluff and I know the feeling was mutual when the nation came to Tally or Jacktown...
I guess we'll see the Rattlers and Tigers on campus once the $12-buck increase helps build those x-number extra seats (another question, another time)...
But i just threw in the Mobile thing as a suggestion to get the series back, first weekend in Nov always meant playing FAMU when I was in school..just like mid Oct. meant playing J-state and Thanksgiving means packing up for the annual whuppin of GSU in the dome...
