Big Ten replaces the SEC as college football's most overrated conference

The biggest shift in college football happened almost overnight, with so little warning it’s practically gone unnoticed. But as of today, with the release of the preseason Amway Coaches Poll for 2017, the SEC is no longer the sport’s most overrated conference.

That honor now belongs to the Big Ten.

While the SEC boasts the nation’s No. 1 team in Alabama, the coaches have put four Big Ten teams in the top 10 to start the season.

Four teams from the conference that hasn’t scored a single point in two consecutive appearances in the College Football Playoff.

Four teams from the conference that face-planted during the most recent bowl season, going 3-7.

The Big Ten has been overrated for years. Every year their main teams get blown out of bowl games. Their bowl record at the end of the last five seasons have been losing records. Those mid-westerners have always overblown the teams in the Big Ten.
As far as the SEC being overrated, I think it may have been overrated last year but not much more than that.

Using bowl records to determine the strength or weakness of a conference is misguided. Any games other than the CFP are glorified exhibition games.

When it comes to inter-conference matchups, that's the best the NCAA has to offer. Post season records, the number of five star recruits conference by conference and the number of NFL draftees on a conference by conference basis are crucial ingredients in gauging a conference's quality.
That's all we have to go by unless one can think of something else.
When one adds all of the above, the SEC is usually at the top as far as conferences are concerned.

On message boards maybe, but not in polling, as evidenced by four Big Ten schools being placed in the top 10 by the coaches.

Just basking over my school's 3-0 record over the overrated SEC last year. We will volunteer another ass kicking for Tennessee in a few weeks in ATL.

Go Jackets! Hail to the best conference - ACC!

nope...sec is still the king of the overrated.

Its been that way for a long time. They typically got VOTED #1 but we see how that has worked out for them in recent years. BUT the rest of their conference just rode the fact that the #1 team in the country was from the SEC. They would have been voted #1 probably each of the last 4 years if not for the playoffs.

Yall played the unanimous 2 weakest programs in the SEC last year, plus your rivalry game.

So when the Big 10 took all types of Ls last year in bowl season AND the CFP that didn't cement it for everyone? In 2 years, they've sent teams to the CFP and got completely SHUT OUT. The "great" Ohio State that didn't even win their conference that everyone said was one of the best 4 teams in the nation was completely shut out.

Overrated as hell

Look at those wins and you will notice the margin of victory. The tide has shifted to the ACC, which is evidenced in Georgia by Tech's consecutive victories over the bullpups. I am sure you will agree UGA is not weak.

We are not overated. None of the SEC teams could beat Clemson and Alabama is the only team worth a damn in the SEC.

And they're doing it AGAIN this year. It's unbelievable. It's as if these folks continue to get selective amnesia at the beginning of each year. The Big Ten's football records against other power conferences has got to be by far the worst between the SEC, ACC and PAC 10.

Come on JR. Over the last five years, the Big Ten clearly has one of the worst head to head records against the SEC when comparing the power five conferences.

SEC VS. POWER 5 BY WINNING PCT. OVER THE LAST DECADE
.668 (vs. ACC)
.630 (vs. Pac-12)
.593 (vs. Big Ten)
.553 (vs. Big 12)

I can give zero reasons to why you are wrong... which would be the same amount of points the best team in the big 10 scored against Clemson.

The overrated SEC's team not only scored but actually won in their semifinal.

Your best teams can't most of their big time games except for Wisconsin who struggled with a good MAC team.

Didn't Ohio State just win a NC and beat Bama on the way to do it? Outside last year's Clemson loss. Didn't Urban beat down a loaded ND team in the Fiesta Bowl that sent a bunch of players to the draft? Hasn't the Big Ten produced some of the better talent in the NFL? The best two RBs in the NFL are from the BIG. The best QB in the NFL is from the BIG. The best defensive player until last year was JJ Watt. Only because he was hurt. NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year is from the BIG. But the conference is overated.

BTW, Ohio State was the youngest team in college football last year. Matchups always dictate the outcomes in the bowl games. Alabama does well when it doesn't go against teams that can throw that rock with consistency and spread them out. One of the reason Ole Piss beat them two years in a row and had them beat again before a second quarter meltdown by Kelly. The SEC QB play makes them not good as they used to be. The gap has closed. Hell the ACC is better now. At least the BIG has improved their play. You cats on here just do not like the BIG because their players are not from our areas. Never understood the dislike for that conference. Even Finebaum said the BIG was better last year. And he is a SEC lover!

Big Ten has better coaches from top to bottom. SEC has one good coach and one so-so at Arkansas. The rest of the SEC coaches are garbage.

What are the head to head records? Who sends more players to the NFL on a consistent basis? QB's aren't all there is in football. There are D-linemen, O-linemen, RB's, WR's, etc.
Why don't Big Ten lovers post the head to head matchups?
The ACC was better last year, yes, but NOT the Big Ten. And Finebaum says stuff just to get a rise out of folks half the time.
The Big Ten was terrible in bowl games just last year, and year before that and year before that.

I trust Finebaum's assessment of the SEC over your assessment. Head to Head matchups only come in bowl games. I bet it would be totally different if they played top vs top and bottom vs bottom to really see. And some of those games were tic for tac. Not blow outs. Only Bama did that to Michigan State who everyone knew was not a good matchup. Pop is right. LOL.
