Other than Notre Dame, who might they go after that would be beneficial to the conference. Could they "steal" a team from another conference? Interesting . . .

Duece,
I mentioned this in the Sumlin to Cincy thread on why he shouldn't go to there. Because the Big Ten was about to talk to a couple of teams in that conference about moving. Here are the teams they are looking at.

Pittsburgh ( Close to Ohio and Michigan....used to be a big rival of Penn State during their independent days. That would renew a rivalry. Also they have a good basketball team. I say this is best choice)

Rutgers ( School has been ramping up athletic efforts...Schiano would not have to leave for Penn State. LOL. They already compete with Penn State for NJ players) This would be my second choice

Syracuse (Other than wanting to have a school from NY State and adding more basketball power to the Big 10, this makes no sense in my mind. It isn't close to most of the Big 10 at all.) Now for Syracuse it would be a come up to be in Big 10 for football and a wash for basketball. The Big East still is a good basketball conference.

Notre Dame aint going to a conference. Them mofos don't want to share no money. Can't say I blame them. The Big 10 has asked them before and they said no. So the Big 10 said fugg it then. You call us, we aint calling you anymore. LOL. There is some bad blood about that still lingers.

I hope Pittsburgh comes. The Big East in football is about to get even weaker if that happens. Most coaches know it and thats why Cincy had to hire the Central Michigan coach.

I am sure Ohio State is blocking the Big 10 from asking Cincy to join. For obvious reasons. :D

Notre Dame is not going to the Big Ten. It just does not benefit them financially. I mean, they have an NBC contract, they don't have to share bowl money and they are grandfathered into the BCS.

I think Mizzou would be a solid fit. They already have a natural rivalry with Illinois in both football and basketball and could be a rival with Iowa as well. Although the East Coast is an attractive prospect, the conference already has programs in Ohio State and Penn State.

West Virginia could possible be a good add.

Yep they would. I think they should go after them instead of mentioning Syracuse.

Could you imagine a Rich Rod lead Michigan team playing WVA. That would be instant rivalry based on how folks felt when he left there. Also they are next door to Ohio.

OK, here's a wild one . . . Kentucky.

Why not?

They're about to wreck shop in basketball. They were competitive in football (beat Georgia). The state borders three Big Ten states (Ohio, Illinois and Indiana).

Geograpically, they're probably closer to more Big Ten schools than they are SEC schools.

And who'll replace Kentucky in the SEC you ask? . . . The "new" Florida State, sans Bobby Bowden . . .

I don't think Kentucky wants to go the Big 10. They would be even worse in Football. At least they can recruit somewhat by being in the SEC. Also I don't think the Big 10 would want them. Outside of basketball, they don't add any value other than being close to Ohio and Indiana. Kentucky folks probably would not want that move either.

Florida State to the SEC would probably piss off Florida. Florida is the flagship school in that state and I am sure that probably use the fact that they are in the SEC to sell a recruit over FSU. Imagine Florida State in the SEC. That would be interesting. Honestly I think the SEC would trade South Carolina for Florida State. But we all know none of that would happen.

now that would shake things up......that would be a good swap... Florida State for Kentucky. I still dont understand why the SEC went after South Carolina. South Carolina needs to be in the ACC. Vanderbilt needs to be in the Sun Belt or Conference USA....

Yeah, I never thought South Carolina was a good fit for the SEC. They really need to be in the ACC. Florida State was courted heavily by the SEC back when they first expanded, buth FSU wanted no part of the SEC. But I don't blame them. They RULED the ACC for years, and picked up a lot of that Duke, UNC basketball money along the way.

But you never really know what a school will do. Kentucky may be more interested in the Big Ten than you think . . . and the Big Ten may be more interested in Kentucy than you think too . . . And I disagree that they would be even worse in football in the Big Ten versus the SEC.

I agree with you on that.

Vandy is the academic school in the conference. You got to have one of those in each conference. Pac 10 has Stanford. Big 10 has Northwestern.

Big 12 has......err.......well......I guess Baylor is their version. LOL.

I think Kentucky has faired decently in recent times in Football. We know their basketball legacy and now that Calipari is there. They will be good until probation comes.:retard::lol:

South Carolina for Florida State would be the swap they should go for. Makes sense. SC fits in with the ACC and Florida State is a better fit for the SEC.

Nah man, I know how these Big 10 folks think. They want a school that will be able to do well in Football. Kentucky would be no better than they are now. I also think some of those kids from the South would not sign with Kentucky if they were playing in the Big 10. Basketball wise it would be great for the Big 10. But that aint the cash cow.

These folks wanted Notre Dame first but we knew that would not happen unless NBC dropped them from their contract.

The school that makes the most sense is Pittsburgh. Good Football program and the basketball program is good as well. They are close to Big 10 schools and like I said earlier......during the 70s and early 80s, the Pitt and Penn State game was a top game every year. I think the Pennsylvania folks would welcome a renewal of that rivarly.

Louisville wouldn't be a bad option either. Makes sense geographically.

Never thought about that. Louisville would be actually a better choice than Kentucky.

Schools that make the most sense for the Big 10:

Pittsburgh, West Va, Rutgers, Louisville, and Missouri.

JR,

I hear what you're saying, but think about it . . . is Pittsburgh really THAT MUCH BETTER than Kentucky in football, or do they just "appear" that way because they're playing lesser competition than Kentucky is in the SEC.

In other words, would Pittsburgh fair much better in the SEC than Kentucky is doing right now? Trust me, I understand the historical rivalry thing - especially with Penn State, and that's important. But right now, I'm talking strictly from a football competitiveness point of view. And when you add in the fact that Kentucky is an historical basketball powerhouse, they may be more worth looking at than you think.

Marshall too...

Marshall aint on that level Phreeze. It would be more beneficial to them than to the Big 10. Those other schools have more money than Marshall. They would take WVa which is the flagship school of that state over Marshall.

Rutgers ( School has been ramping up athletic efforts...Schiano would not have to leave for Penn State. LOL. They already compete with Penn State for NJ players) This would be my second choice

Outside of ND, these two are the top choices for the Big Ten. The Big Ten really wants too expand in the North East market, especially the Big Ten Network. One Big Ten rep even said they wanted to get this network running smoothly before they pursued expansion again. Several teams already recruit that area pretty heavy. If the Big Ten added either school, the Big Ten Network world pick up thousands/millions of extra viewers. You best believe this will factor into their decision.

JoePa will do his damndest to keep Pitt out. I have no idea why, but that man has some serious hate for Pitt.

Notre Dame is the best fit, but they ain't coming. After them, Pitt, Missouri, Kentucky, Rutgers, even Syracuse all make sense. I don't see Louisville as a good fit for the Big 10, they don't have any natural rivalries with any of the schools. Of course, neither does Syracuse or Rutgers. Rutgers biggest non-conference football rivalry might be with the MEAC, since they play a MEAC team every year. :D

It would be interesting of Missouri or Kentucky make the move, just to see the fallout for other conferences. Who gets into the Big 12 to replace Missouri? Who does the SEC take to replace Kentucky? Would the Big East FINALLY take Memphis if Pitt, Rutgers or Syracuse make the move? Heck, what if they add THREE teams to become the Big 14? So many fun possibilities to think of!

Not so sure about that.

They both have great basketball tradition, but Kentucky is head and shoulders above Louisville in that regard, when all is said and done. And when it comes to football, Louisville is among the "nouveau riche", or "new rich". They've been a relatively hot name for the past decade or so, but I'd still take Kentucky over them in the final analysis.

If WV move to the Big Ten, that will leave a huge hole in the Big East. Who is going to replace them?

West Virginia could possible be a good add.

I think this would not be a good move. WVU is overrated, especially their football program. They only became good when VTech, Miami, and BC left the Big East. They don't really bring nothing to the table.

I can't see Syracuse making that move at all. They are the flagship in the Big East when it comes to Men's Basketball. They have a great rivalry with Georgetown and UCONN...

Pitt has historically been better than Kentucky in football. So yes.

Duece, you are looking at how Kentucky does in the SEC. The Big 10 don't care about that. Pittsburgh was a win away from a BCS bowl berth. They have been better than Kentucky in football and their basketball program has been better than Kentucky recently. Now we know UK basketball is back and of course HUGE. Biggest in the SEC. But the Big 10 folks are not going to be enamored with Kentucky. Trust this Big 10 alum on this one.

Also Kentucky is not going to want to leave the lucrative SEC for the Big 10. It is no reason for them to do that. Lexington is close enough to Nashville and Knoxville. Not that bad to get to on down to Athens. The longest trip they have is probably to Baton Rouge or Gainsville. Kentucky aint that close to Minnesota, Iowa, nor State College. It would be more travel for them in the Big 10 than in the SEC. Ann Arbor and East Lansing would not be no hop skip and jump either.

I think you just want Kentucky gone. LOL. Leave them be. They add big recognition to the SEC in basketball. They leave and the SEC would not have any Mens team that has that kind of recognition. Florida won those 2 National titles, but we know that aint the norm.
