SWAC: Grambling & Bethune-Cookman Hit Hard With Suspensions & Fines For Brawl

The Southwestern Athletic Conference has announced suspensions and institutional fines stemming from a halftime altercation that transpired between the Bethune-Cookman University and Grambling State University football teams on Saturday, Nov. 8.

After conducting a comprehensive investigation, it was determined that both schools violated the league’s code of ethics/conduct by committing acts of unsportsmanlike conduct.

27 student-athletes (9 from Bethune-Cookman and 18 from Grambling State) have been suspended for their respective involvement in the altercation. Of the total number of 27 suspensions, 3 of those student-athletes have been disciplined with two game suspensions due to the severity of their actions.

Additionally, in accordance with league bylaws and sports regulations, the Conference Office has levied a fine against Bethune-Cookman in the amount $25,000.00, along with a fine against Grambling State in the amount of $40,000.00.

Cam Newton, DeSean Jackson strike nerve with HBCU brawl commentary

Jackson said the altercation undercut the progress HBCU programs have made in building credibility and visibility.

“We put too much work here, working hard day in and day out, man, and to just discredit and throw it all away for that,” he said. “The head coaches, all the coaches that were involved — it just didn’t look good, man. And it just shows, you know, it shows how ghetto sometimes we can be, man. And it don’t look good.”

His “ghetto” comment struck a nerve with many within the HBCU community, who felt it unfairly reinforced stereotypes about Black programs and players. Some alumni and supporters acknowledged Jackson’s frustration but pushed back on the framing, arguing that fights happen across college football — from the SEC to the Big Ten — and are not unique to HBCUs.

Still, Jackson said the moment was damaging to the image of Black college athletics

DeSean called it Ghetto while looking Ghetto as a coach??? It's a lack of team control that happens across all levels and demographics in football, so are those cases ghetto? That's the only part he was wrong on.

So folks upset cause he told the truth? If that fight (or any other fights we’ve had) looked good to yall and was a great representation of us then yall have a point. Don’t care what school it is, that shit does not look good and is very ghetto. Especially when coaches get involved. Feel how yall feel and think what you want but yall can’t say he’s wrong about HIS opinion he was asked for. We gotta get out of this fake outrage bs

Opinion isn't "truth."

While the man has a right to his opinion, he's only repeating the same harmful narratives and tropes that were once used against him as an NFL player. Additionally, it’s not even the ghetto comment that was problematic (which plays into all sorts of racist stereotypes about black people).

It’s Jackson’s belief that the fight somehow “hurt” HBCUs when confrontations involving PWIs — like the Michigan-Ohio State brawl that involved players being pepper-sprayed — are heralded as something to be celebrated in terms of rivalry and passion that makes college football unique and great.

TV networks often promote those incidents in highlight packages leading up to the games.

Those fights are not considered a stain on those institutions or PWIs as a whole because they’re tied to whiteness. And whiteness is associated with being inherently good, not "ghetto," despite evidence that says otherwise.

Yeah, the fight was not a good look for either school. However, all this grandstanding about what it means in the macro sense is excessive.

I'm sorry but it is and always has been ignorant and ghetto when people fight. Yes I have been in fights so guess what I was part of the ignorance and ghetto mess too. Maturing is realizing that black men fighting like animals and bragging about defending our home like it's a gang turf is unacceptable! At some point more of us are going to have to realize keeping it real is ignorance and doesn't show intelligence.

I see bench clearing brawls in baseball because someone disrespected the other team by flipping his bat or some unwritten rule. It's laughed about in hockey & baseball just boys being boys. I don't hear "thugs" , " ghetto" , or " gang" talk then. I expect that from Whites , but tap dancing kneegrows like Jackson should never have been invited into this space. The self hate & devaluation is high amongst Black folks. Even some here who put too much care in what White folks think about them or their institutions.

Are we holding ourselves to a higher standard or not? Because we can’t do that then cry about someone’s opinion of a stupid ass fight and say “well what about such and such PWI when they did it” … f*ck them PWIs. They aren’t and should never be OUR standard. Either we are going to hold ourselves accountable, be more mature, and do better or we can keep crying and having fake outrage about peoples opinions.

I was always taught and heard from blacks that we have to work 10x harder and smarter than “them”. Does this not apply in this situation? Cause it seems like it doesn’t the way yall trying to compare us to folks that don’t live by the same standards as us.

FYI, their standards will never change no matter how much yall cry about it.

Because the words "ghetto," "thug," and "gang" are only associated with black people.

Black people are the ONLY group of folks in the country who are judged by the actions of a few.

The current POTUS of the U.S. can feature himself in a video piloting a fighter jet dumping shit on protesters and have folks -- many of them in positions of leadership in government -- make excuses for it all day. He's just having fun, they say. It's just jokes, they say.

But let a football fight happen, and folks can't wait to tell you how it sets back HBCUs and black folks a 1,000 years. lol

ULL vs Texas State had a mid field brawl then it moved into the tunnel ( 13 suspended), but I don't hear as a stain on PWI'S " gang" or " ghetto"( outside the usual bigot trolls online). Guilford College & Averrett University (D 3 PWI'S) had a brawl & both their seasons forfeited & not a stain on all PWIs . Any transgression by Blacks become an entire referendum on all Blacks , Black culture & institutions & what sickens me is Blacks who feed into this.

It's not the 1st & it won't be the last fight . Southern refused to play Grambling for over 11 years because of a widely reported brawl( no camera phones) that they blamed Coach Rob & Grambling for. Grambling , Coach Rob & HBCUs seem to have survived / thrived. These overreacting kneegrows need to sit down.
