Proud ***** of JSU
Halfway through, Aggies have exceeded all expectations

10-16-03

News & Record

GREENSBORO ?? The job description for the first half of N.C. A&T??s football season was daunting.

Take a young team that was 4-8 last year and play the first six games away from home.

So George Small, an A&T graduate who understands the tradition of Aggies football, took the job, rolled up his sleeves and went to work in his blue-collar way.

The result? The Aggies have exceeded even the most optimistic expectations by winning five of those six games. This week they appeared at No. 25 in the NCAA Division I-AA poll. Their only loss is to unbeaten No. 17 Southern.

Small said the idea was to take the six games as separate entities, without getting caught up in speculation about records. At the end of that stretch, the staff would look up and see where things were.

??We knew this was a developing and restructuring football team,?? he said. ??We wanted to have some success, and so far we??ve done just that.??

Key to ratings

BCS-caliber performance: ****

Good enough for a bowl: ***

Not ready for postseason: **

Not ready for regular season: *

Offense ** 1/2

The Aggies haven??t exactly been a juggernaut on offense, but they??ve gotten the job done despite shuffling personnel.

Marshall Glenn was supplanted by Randal Rankins at quarterback, and both will likely see playing time the rest of the season. Rico Watkins also could get into the mix as A&T looks for consistency.

Frank Patterson started as the top running back, then Micheaux Hollingsworth got a chance and now Carl Scriven is getting a look. All three will likely continue to play, but someone needs to step up and claim the starting job.

The Aggies haven??t thrown a lot, but have some playmaking receivers in Jamal Jones and Doug Brown and would do well to get them the ball.

Before the season, the offensive line was expected to be a strong point and it has delivered, despite some injuries.

Defense ****

A&T opened the season by shutting out N.C. Central, holding the Eagles to 198 total yards and forcing six turnovers. It was a smashing debut for the 3-4 defensive front that was expected to be a 4-3 set when preseason practice began.

The Aggies haven??t duplicated that opening-game success, but the defense hasn??t suffered much of a drop-off, either. A&T ranks seventh in I-AA in total defense (253.83 yards per game) and leads the nation with 15 interceptions.

The linebackers have been particularly impressive, clogging holes up front, pursuing the run to the outside and taking away passes underneath.

??We didn??t have any stars,?? Small said. ??All the national champions, they didn??t have one single star but had a lot of guys drafted. They just played blue-collar football. And that??s what we??re doing right now.??

Special teams ***

Yonnick Matthews spent a lot of time this summer strengthening his kicking leg, and the results have been excellent. He has hit 10 of 12 field-goal attempts, including school records of five in a game and a 52-yarder.

Matthews also punts and kicks off. He??s averaging 36.3 yards on punts, and many of his kickoffs are finding the end zone. The only concern would be how tired his leg will be in the second half of the season.

One problem to be worked out is long snaps, which have cost A&T yardage.

Coaching ***

There are some things Small would do differently in his first six games as A&T??s head coach if he could, such as taking a few knees in the final minutes at Morgan State instead of trying to run the ball.

But, generally, he??s pushed the right buttons, and the Aggies have responded.

One of the smartest things Small did after taking the job was surround himself with experienced assistants.

Darryl McNeill, who came from South Carolina State to be A&T??s offensive coordinator, has mixed up the play-calling well, though the Aggies?? pound-the-ball mentality in the red zone hasn??t produced the desired results.

Defensive coordinator Alonzo Lee, who followed Small from Hampton, has made full use of the team??s speed and athleticism at linebacker. The move to the 3-4 in the preseason probably was the most critical decision the staff has made.

Overall ***

Defense has carried the Aggies, which is fine with Small. A former defensive end and linebacker, he will always build his teams around defense.

One thing he wants the defense to improve is efficiency in the third quarter. It has had letdowns against Southern, Norfolk State and Morgan State after halftime.

The offense has been spotty, but there are some talented skill people on hand. With six games of McNeill??s ??take what the defense gives you?? approach, a more consistent effort is expected in the second half. A clear No. 1 quarterback and running back would solidify things.

Second half

The Aggies, who have surpassed last year??s victory total, can start to think Division I-AA playoffs with four of their six remaining games at home and no one, including Bethune-Cookman, running away from the MEAC pack.

??We??re looking at that ?? that??s possible,?? Small said of A&T??s chance to make the postseason.

Before heading to Daytona Beach, Fla., to play Bethune, A&T makes its home debut Saturday against Florida A&M ?? a tough matchup but one that won??t affect the conference standings now that the Rattlers are considered I-A ?? and plays host to Howard next week in a game the Aggies likely will be favored to win.

The Aggies shouldn??t have more than one MEAC loss heading into the final two weeks of the regular season. If their offense catches up to their defense by then, they??ll be capable of beating Hampton (at home) and South Carolina State (in Charlotte) to bring home their first league title since 1999.

That was considered a slim possibility when the season began.

Staff Writer Jeff Carlton contributed to this report.

Why are you still here talking about your c**n? We have moved on to our conference foes and you're still here. Why? Leave our board.

I am here because we own you. You have never beaten us in the entire history of your scrub program.

Don't talk smack in the offseason if you can't take the heat during the season.

Dude, you own no one. Your scrub team still sucks. Pls dont get it twisted. You all enjoy your season now, cause you wont see another one for about 10 or so more years. But then again, you all are playing in the MEwAC with untalented teams, so who knows.

Aggies pick off title

GREENSBORO -- They picked on him. He picked on them right back.

N.C. A&T cornerback Theron Thomas, making his first career start, was beaten earlier in the day by Hampton. But he intercepted the late-game pass Saturday that would have put Hampton ahead and likely would have dashed A&T's dream of a MEAC championship.

Even the Aggies themselves considered that dream fairly unrealistic three months ago. But not after Thomas picked off Tim Frazier's fade pass in the corner of the end zone.

A&T was a 38-28 winner at Aggie Stadium. The band boomed, players danced and the commissioner grabbed a microphone and declared the Aggies 2003 champions.

"During summer camp, they showed us the MEAC film of last football season," Thomas said, "and we were on everybody's highlight. Every team had a highlight on us. That just made us mad and gave us something to strive for."

The Aggies' new coach, George Small, told them to forget that 4-8 calamity. This team was championship caliber, he insisted. Eventually, they were all persuaded.

Now that they have won eight straight games and clinched the MEAC's automatic berth in the I-AA playoffs, the rest of the league understands from where Small was coming.

"I've never had a ring," senior receiver Bud Phillips said. "This is my first one. I'm ready for Monday to get measured."

A&T (6-0 MEAC, 10-1) could start thinking about championship jewelry only after Thomas, a Dudley alumnus, picked off Frazier's pass from the 26 with 2:59 left on the clock and the Aggies hanging on, 31-28.

"He tripped on my foot," Thomas said of intended receiver Marcus Rush. "We were told all week to cut off their routes. I just cut off his route and got the ball."

Said Hampton coach Joe Taylor: "Our guy is 6-5. Their guy's about 5-8. All we've got to do is stop, go up and make the play. But we fall."

Hampton fell for the third straight week. Winning the league title, which it would have done with a victory over A&T, was its only viable way into the playoffs.

The Aggies salted it away when Phillips went 69 yards on a short third-down slant route and quarterback Rico Watkins then hit Kenny Perry in the right side of the end zone.

Frazier brought Hampton back late -- the Pirates trailed by 17 points in the second quarter -- but the league's leading passer started the afternoon on the sideline. Even so, sophomore quarterback Princeton Shepherd went after A&T's defense with the deep ball.

"I would've gone after them, too," Small said.

That's because the Aggies were without senior cornerback Curtis Deloatch -- suspended because of a fighting ejection last week -- for the first half. And two of their starting defensive backs, seniors Charles Harper and James McCoy, were slowed by ankle injuries.

Shepherd passed for 174 yards, completing a couple of downfield doozies against a young secondary that tried to minimize the damage by mixing coverages. When Shepherd left with an injured throwing shoulder in the third quarter, Frazier came in and brought the Pirates within 31-28 on a 45-yard touchdown pass to Jerome Mathis.

Hampton had some big plays through the air against the second-best defense in I-AA, but the Pirates' defense gave up a lot of yardage on the ground. A&T's Micheaux Hollingsworth had 100 rushing yards by halftime and finished with 125.

"It was right in the teeth of it," Small said of an outstanding Hampton defensive line that he used to coach. "But you hope you have some cavities here and there and can cause some pain."

With the run established, the Aggies opened things up after halftime, as Watkins frequently improvised to make big completions when flushed out of the pocket by Hampton's pass rush.

Watkins did just that to put A&T up 31-21 in the third quarter, zipping a pass into Phillips in the end zone while sidestepping blitzing linebacker Rudolph Foye.

A&T led 14-0 early after Craig Rogers pounced on a botched kick return and took it in.

Hampton rallied, but the A&T secondary would get the last laugh. Especially Thomas.

"I played kind of timid at first because I had to get a feel for the game," he said. "After that, it was just: Let's play football."

Why the Aggies won: They pounded Hampton with the run in the first half and got big pass plays from QB Rico Watkins after halftime. A&T's pass defense was riddled much of the day but made the game-sealing interception late.

Beyond the stats: When Craig Rogers returned a fumbled kickoff return in the first quarter, it was the second touchdown in three weeks scored by the Aggies' special teams.

Worth repeating: "When the coaches came in and told us we could win a championship, honestly, I believed them ... but I had my doubts." -- A&T cornerback Curtis Deloatch

All I can say is that it is a good thing A&T is not in the SWAC. You would not be champions. You got whooped by SU and got out of Jackson on a prayer. Grambling, Alcorn, AAMU and AlaState would beat the ish out of you....UAPB and TxSo would give you all you could handle.

Now carry on with you JSU OBSESSION.

Which record would you rather have?
Nobody answered this, but they would rather have Bell. It's amazing how fast they picked up on the "Prairie View" mentality when it comes to their team. At least they look good in practice, right?

See that's the point .......................... Nobody here has a P. View mentality. Our season was over weeks ago. The difference between A&T and JSU is A&T supporters will act like they won the SUPERBOWL after 1 damm win. At JSU , if you don't win, nothing else matters.

You have had the loser mentality for a LOOOOONNNNNGGGG TIME. This is new to us ...........................TEACH US HOW TO TAKE THE PAIN ......................... :p

Loser "Prairie View" mentality is giving up on the season when you still have games left. That's why you bent over and enjoyed that unlubricated L from TnSU in 2001. That's why Alcorn is going to break the scoreboard on you this weekend.

_ _ _ :(

No ........................... A loser mentality is what you are displaying now. Your not used to winning anything ............... LIKE A&T. IT'S INGRAINED INTO YOUR LOSER MENTALITY TO "NOT GIVE UP ON A SEASON" YEAR AFTER YEAR.

At JSU .................... WIN OR THE WHOLE SEASON IS A WASH. With you .................YOU WIN ONE GAME AND YOUR WHOLE SEASON IS MADE.

So let me get this straight....

It's a WINNING mentality to give up on the season halfway through?

It's a LOSING mentality to try to win all your games, win the conference and national title?

Is that what you are trying to tell me?
Have you and Tiggerpride been smoking together again?

Dude ........................... What we have been trying to tell you is A&T don't mean anything to us .................PERIOD.

You are 10 and 1, if I'm not mistaken, but you are HERE WORRIED ABOUT WHAT JSU IS DOING instead of enjoying your MEWACK Championship dreams.

Say's a lot about a MEWACK championship.

Just admit that Small is a much better coach than DumBell, and that Bell was the worst mistake in the history of JSU football and I will leave yall alone about it.

Say it.

Just say it. :)

Small did a good job with what he had but JSU is still proud of James Bell.

Please do not try to check every JSU fan into the same mental hospital that you and Dances reside in. 99% of the entire state of Mississippi loathes that evil spirit and you know it.

Dude, your scrub program has not won anything resembling a title since 1996. We have won two MEAC championships and 1 BCF national championship in that time.

JSU is a honor student when it comes to losing.

Dude ...........Once again ..............I could care less if A&T won the 1-a national championship.

MEWACK schools don't mean SHAT to me. As far a BCF title .............. who cares when evry high school and college of all classes are included.

The MEWACK board is that ==============>. Try to impress them ........................ NOBODY HERE CARES.

But you seemed to care this preseason when everyone was saying that Bell was a much better hire than Small and that A&t would not be successful.

What changed?

Who cares about the game in Jackson earlier this year....
Who cares about the 0-fer-lifetime against A&T...
Who cares about conference championships...
Who cares about 1-AA championships or SCGs.....
Who cares about wins and losses...
Who cares about football...

From loyal diehard Tiger fan to Prairie View in 8 weeks :(
How sad is that? :( That's the Bell factor :(
