It's official: Bell will be returning for his third season at JSU.

Coach Bell will be allowed to finish his contract.

It was on the news and is in the Clarion Ledger.

Sounds good to me, and I know this decision has the full support of coach Pete Richardson and the SU Athletic Department. Hats off to Tigerpride! :ebrow:

All Jackson State supporters :bawling: :bawling: :bawling: :bawling:

Everyone else: :jump: :jump: :jump:

Talk about a sham. You fire a man for winning 30 games in 4 seasons, but retain a man that can only manage 6 wins in two seasons. Hughes averaged over 7 wins per season. Disgraceful.

I don't understand the big deal with having this meeting. The JSU AD said a couple of weeks ago that Bell was not going anywhere. Seems like a lot of drama for nothing.

It could be a case of the AD stiil trying to justify the decision to hire him by hoping that Bell can still turn it around. The risk is that if doesn't, the AD might well go down with him.

Regards.

That is so the case. You hit the nail right on the head. :look:

 Are you all kidding me? Aren't Mason, Culberson & Bell transplants from outside of black college academia? These clowns have no respect for jsu athletic tradition or give two rat droppings about the pulse of jsu community. This is an example of what can happen when not keeping some of your own in key strategic decision making positions. This is one sad situation.

Hughes has to be somewhere laughing his arse off! I kinda felt that he would finish his contract rather than JSU buying him out. Oh well, JSU look for another year of big time beatdowns from the SWAC and this year the Jaguar Nation is header to Memorial :swink:

...Robber wept. :lmao:

The rest of the SWAC is already trying to line up JSU as homecoming bait.

Sad, but so TRUE!

JSU football left in limbo as Bell goes into Year 3

THERE'S an old southern saying about decisionmaking that goes like this: You need to either fish or cut bait.

In other words, you need to make a decision, and then commit to it. Don't be wishy-washy. Make the call and then be bullish about it.

Given the choice of fishing or cutting bait, Jackson State has done neither with its football program.

Jackson State will allow James Bell to coach the third year of his three-year contract without an extension. JSU officials have said that although the on-field record doesn't show it, Bell has made progress. That he has laid a firm foundation.

If they really feel that way, then they should extend his contract and give him some recruiting ammunition. They should give him a fighting chance to build on that firm foundation.

Instead, they are basically hanging Bell out to dry in the third year of a three-year contract and putting the JSU football program in limbo.

That's bad business.

You'd think JSU would learn.

This same situation occured again and again with the JSU basketball program and former coach Andy Stoglin. Seemingly season after season, Stoglin's job was on the line. Year after year, he would get a one-year contract.

And, year after year, he was hamstrung. Generally speaking, college recruits want to know who their coach is going to be. They don't wan t to guess.

Fire him?

A wise man once told me how to make an either/or decision. He said you should take a legal pad and draw a line down the center of the page. On one side, you should list the reasons to go with Plan A. On the other side, you list the reasons to go with Plan B.

Let's do that with Bell.

Reasons to fire him:

He has won six games and lost 17 over two seasons. The previous coach, who was fired, had just guided the Tigers to three straight 7-4 seasons.

In his first season, Bell inherited 12 starters from a seven-win team, including the most productive passing quarterback in JSU history. He switched to a run-first, pass-second offense and the Tigers won two games.

JSU had beaten its arch-rival Alcorn eight straight times before Bell arrived. He has lost to Alcorn both seasons.

Under Bell, JSU has won one home game in two seasons.

Not surprisingly, attendance is down significantly. Although JSU would have to pay Bell's 2004-05 salary of $85,000 to fire him, that amounts to the sale of only about 5,000 tickets. Attendance is down much more than that per game. A dynamite, 15-minute halftime show will only bring them back so many times.

Or keep him

OK, now then, reasons to keep Bell:

After winning two games, his first year, Bell won four games his second. That's a 100-percent improvement.

JSU officials are pleased with improved classroom attendance and grade point averages of football players. They also are pleased with what they consider an improved overall character of the Tiger players.

Bell apparently has done a nice job of fund-raising for JSU support facilities.

He's a good guy with a charming smile.

That's the list.

Thumbs up?

Thumbs down?

You decide.

JSU apparently could not.

Now I know they got to be extremely frustrated.

JSU sticks with Bell as coach

Some expected his ouster after 2 losing football seasons

In the final seconds of Jackson State University's 16-14 loss Saturday to Alcorn State University, some Tiger football fans chanted, "Bell must go! Bell must go!"

Those fans won't get their wish. James Bell, whose teams have won six games and lost 17 over the last two seasons, will continue to coach the team, school officials said Tuesday.

Bell has one year remaining on a guaranteed three-year contract paying him $85,000 per year. "We decided to honor that contract," JSU athletic director Roy Culberson said.
Under Bell, JSU posted its first back-to-back losing seasons since the 1969 and 1970 seasons. The Tigers finished 2-10 in Bell's first season ? the worst mark in program history ? and 4-7 this season.

As the losses mounted, so did speculation among fans that Bell might be fired.

Bryan Jackson, 33, a JSU fan from Clinton, said he was "surprised" Bell was retained.

"His record speaks for itself," said Jackson. "I've got a question: Why should I buy a season ticket? I've got another question: Why is this man not held to the same standard as the former coach? How can you justify firing a guy who won seven games every season and keeping a guy who barely won four?"

Robert Hughes, Bell's predecessor, was fired after three consecutive 7-4 seasons.

JSU is 1-9 in games in Jackson under Bell, and has beaten just one team with a winning record. JSU has lost to rival Alcorn State the past two seasons, ending an eight-year winning streak over the Braves.

"Won-lost record is not the final determination," Culberson said. "There are a lot of other intangibles involved. We're not happy with where we finished in the standings. However, when we went through the evaluation process, there were a lot of positives."

Culberson and JSU president Ronald Mason have both pointed to Bell's fund-raising abilities and the football team's improved grade point average as examples of improvements Bell has made that don't show up on the field.

Shelly Hart of Huntsville, Ala., president of the JSU Alabama Alumni Chapter, said in an e-mail this week that Bell should remain.

"He has great skills to improve our program and the leadership abilities to get the job done," Hart said in the e-mail.

Culberson said a contract extension was not discussed.

"We're going to be looking for total improvement within the program ... there needs to be significant improvement," he said. "We're being very optimistic that will happen. We're looking for a good season."

When asked if entering next season without additional years on his contract bothered him, Bell replied: "No. That's part of the business. It's what we do."

Bell said he was confident he would return.

"I'm a positive thinker," Bell said. "We've done positive things here. We've moved forward."

Bell said his next focus is recruiting. "We've already begun," he said.

Attendance for JSU games at Mississippi Veterans Stadium has declined significantly, from an average of 29,068 in 2001 to 16,273 this season.

Bell says there's more to building a program than selling tickets.

"Anybody in the country that runs a program knows that just tickets is not going to make a program go," Bell said. "You have to have other areas of bringing in income. Those are the things we have to continue to evaluate."

In his own evaluation of the program, Bell said, "We've made a lot of improvements." JSU doubled its win total this season from Bell's first year. Bell also pointed out that the Tigers were more competitive in several of their losses against top-flight competition.

Four of the losses came to teams currently ranked in the top 20 in The Sports Network Division I-AA poll: No. 11 Hampton, No. 15 Northwestern (La.) State, No. 19 Alabama State and No. 20 Southern University.

JSU loses 10 senior starters off this year's team, including quarterback Brian Green, leading receiver Chris Jones, leading tackler Joseph Scott and top defensive lineman Deon DeBoise. The Tigers do return their top three running backs ? David Kennebrew, Olandus Rogers and Curtis Hayes.

Bell remains confident he can turn things around despite the departure of those seniors and the lack of success in his first two seasons. "I have a lot of people that know where my heart is," he said. "They know what I'm trying to do."

Watch TP say something like "Bell is the best recruiter in the SWAC." :lmao:

If Bell gets 4 years and can only beat teams with losing records, he will be fired too. You people act like we fired Hughes azz for nothing. All he had to do was win and he didn't!!

Prophetic!!!!!!!!!!

Not only will next year be bad for JSU, but the following years will too.

May as well kiss recruiting good-bye for this year.

Ignorance is bliss

Re: JSU football left in limbo as Bell goes into Year 3

MH, Bell is probably the best recruiter in the SWAC. Most of his players have yet to hit the field. 90% of Hughes players were on the field this year. The transition is about to begin.
