ALCORN OFFICIAL LIST..GREAT CLASS WITH SIZE!


Lorman, Miss.-The Alcorn State Men's basketball program announces its' 2013 signing class. Head Coach Luther Riley is ecstatic about his signees and has quoted that his new crop is going to make an immediate impact for the 2013-14 season.

Riley introduces seven new faces to the Alcorn family. Two of the recruits who stand out are Dandy Dozen's Rakeem Lehaman and Marquis Vance. Mr. Basketball from 2009, Shaunessey Smith will also make his way down to the “Reservation” to join the Braves this season.

Rakeem Lehaman/6'4-170/Greenwood, MS/Amanda Elzy High
Lehaman is a 6-4, 170 a two-time Mississippi Dandy Dozen and All-State First Team select. He led Amanda Elzy to back-to-back 4A State Championships in 2012 and 2013.

Marquis Vance/6'7-220/Tchula, MS/SV Marshall
Vance is a 6-7, 220 forward two-time Mississippi Dandy Dozen and All-State select. In 2012, Vance help guide SV Marshall to a 2A State Championship

Isaiah Hill/6'11-270/Indianpolis, IN/Winfrey Academy
Hill is a 6-11, 270 pound center who is very versatile. Hill was ranked No. 91 by ESPN among all centers in the country.

Decarlos Holmes/6'9-230/Millington, TN/Millington Central
Holmes is a 6-9, 230 forward who was selected as one of the top forwards in Memphis by the Commercial's Appeal.

Trey Brown/6'8-215/Brandon, MS/East Mississippi
Brown, a Brandon, MS native who led his team to back-to-back State Championship appearances, and signed with Tennessee Chattanooga out of high school. He is unique and has a great shooting touch at 6-8.

B.J. West/6'11-240/Cheyneyville, La/New Mexico State
West, a transfer center from New Mexico State, helped lead the Aggies to a WAC Championship and NCAA appearance in 2013. West can play immediately and his intensity and toughness will impact the Braves this upcoming season.

Shaunessey Smith/6'6-220/Macon, MS/Mississippi State
One of the best players to ever come through the State of Mississippi, highly-touted Smith had a stellar career at Noxubee County and was a two-time Mississippi Dandy Dozen select and was Mr. Basketball (Runner-Up).
 



I'm not sure how much Shaunessy Smith will be able to contribute. Dude has had a lingering hip injury that has hobbled him his whole college career. Watching him walk after a game is painful. He is a good shooter and plays hard. The question will be has he recovered from his injury enough to contribute during his last year of eligibility.
 
Southern Coach Roman Banks took the Jaguars to the NCAA Tournament this year and the school announced that it had reached an agreement with Banks on a contract extension on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Banks and Southern signed a class that could indicate a return trip in the near future.

The Jaguars announced the signings of six players including Scotlandville guard Tre'Lun Banks, son of the Southern head coach.

Banks, 6 feet 1, was joined at his signing by 6-foot-8 Scotlandville teammate Jared Sam. Southern also received paperwork from Elex Carter, a 6-7 forward from East St. John, Chris Thomas and a 6-5 guard from Glen Oaks.

Southern added two more players from out of town, perhaps in part to the NCAA Tournament appearance. Rashad Andrews, a 6-5 guard who played his senior season at Boys and Girls High School in New York City before prepping for a year at Lee Academy in Maine, and DaMontre McFarland, a 6-9 post player from Arlington Heights in Fort Worth, round out the class.

The last year of the Rob Spivery era at Southern, the men’s basketball team had more players from New Jersey (four) than Louisiana (three).

Spivery’s successor took more big steps Wednesday toward enhancing the program’s local flavor.

On the first day of college basketball’s spring signing period, Southern coach Roman Banks welcomed aboard four players who could reach The Bluff on a half tank of gas.

Three of those players, in fact, could reach Southern on bicycles.

Glen Oaks standout Chris Thomas, 6-foot-5, joined the Scotlandville duo of Tre’Lun Banks and Jared Sam as Southern signees from Baton Rouge. East St. John post player Elex Carter (6-7) signed with the Jaguars as well.

“Some kids locally have been reluctant to go there because of the program’s past,” Thomas said. “You’re going to start to see (Southern) get more local kids now.”

Tre’Lun Banks, the son of the Southern coach, and Sam helped Scotlandville win back-to-back Class 5A state championships.

Southern was also in the mix for another Scotlandville player, but 5A title game MVP Brian Bridgewater signed with LSU.

Graduating has nothing to do with APR. It's not calculated into the equation. A "roster being turned over tremendously" is all that equation calculates. A lot of people still don't understand APR. If you graduate 20 football players but 5 players on the entire roster of 80+ kids, fail and drop out, you are in APR trouble. The equation does not care about the 20, only the 5. So just because he graduated 8 does not mean that 4-5 didn't transfer out (passing or not) and cost Alcorn retention points. That's enough in bball to get you in trouble. The 8 does not matter. APR is really stupid.

We have just seen this before. I am just happy that you and FAMU are not in the same conference. I don't think I could take two underachieving schools being so hype on one board.

And you have no clue. We have won 19 and 23 games in back to back seasons with our new coach who also won the SWAC Tourney. So it ain't like we are basing it on something he has not done.

Go sit in a corner somewhere TP. LOL. Right now we are in better shape that your alma mater Ga Tech is in the ACC. LOL.

Underachieving your school's middle name. LOL. Why you think Jayrob and others want your boy Fat Rick gone for not winning enough. Or why you forced your basketball coach into retirement, or why you got rid of your ladies coach, or why your AD has yall in a sexual harassment scandal, or why your baseball program consistently falls short in the SWAC tourney even when having a good team that SHOULD win. Even the great Eddie Payton let someone else win golf for a change last year.
