From SU Athletics

Head men's basketball coach Roman Banks has received permission to meet with Texas A&M basketball concerning filling a position on the Aggies' coaching staff, Southern University confirmed Friday.

Officials from Texas A&M contacted Southern athletics director William Broussard to request permission to speak with Banks about serving on the Aggies coaching staff under current coach Billy Kennedy.

Banks served as associate head coach under Kennedy during their stint at Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond.

"I am honored that Billy Kennedy and Texas A&M would consider me a qualified candidate to serve on the Aggies staff. Despite the outside interest, my focus remains centered on elevating the profile of Southern University men's basketball."

That's what I thought.

Seems like a good way to end up with no job unless Banks can get some guarantee of being next in line if/when Kennedy steps down.

we know tamu can pay more but unless they're going to make him the new head coach in waiting like they do in football I'd wait it out.

Does it pay more money? Larger program...etc.. what makes it a bad opportunity?

Only the money would make it a better opportunity. Banks was the engine that made southeastern go when Kennedy was there. Banks is a better coach than Kennedy. Why would he go be under a coach that he's better than and is about to be fired. No way Banks would be considered for tamu head coaching job. That would make two coloreds leading 2 of the 3 major sport programs there. :smh:

I would think if Banks was to accept another position, it would be as head coach as successful as he currently is. If the circumstances were different, it might be plausible.

if he's in the pipeline to become head coach, i think it's a good opportunity. but it seems like Kennedy is his ticket into the program.

however, it's kind of good that coaches are getting looks even during APR complexity seasons in basketball. but it would be great if coaches wanted to stick around and continue what they started in building a strong program.

I never said it was a bad opportunity just wondered why it would be considered great or greater than coaching at su? The way most on here appear to think, why not just close down HBCUs?

Another thing....larger ain't always better or a better opportunity. Our men's basketball coach should have learned that lesson from his IU experience......and I am talking about what he told us from his own lips.

Agreed but in the paper it said that he is going to wait on a ruling from the ncaa. After June 1st if the ban is not lifted players can transfer to another school. *sigh* They are scheduled to meet tomorrow and Tuesday with a ruling later this month on what they are going to do. I just hope they reduce practice time and not fool with the scholarships.

His father, Cleophus, played basketball at Southern in the 1960s and is a member of the school’s Hall of Fame. Banks was a Southern assistant from 1996-2002, former Southern and NBA great Bob Love is his godfather and Banks’ brother, Carlos Sample, also is in the school’s Hall of Fame.

“I’m very excited about the future,” Banks said. “It would be a very difficult decision because Southern is embedded in me. I have personal attachments and I would like to try to move the program to a level they haven’t seen. We’re on the right path and I would like to try to continue that.”

I hope the NCAA ruling is good. Some recruits are holding back.
