TP,

For the record, the deal being discussed would pay Bama State at least $500,000 PLUS EXPENSES including the band.

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

OK...56-6...is that more viable for you? The rest of those questions..are you serious? I guess it'll depend on whether or not PSU takes out their starters in the 2nd or the 3rd quarter.

unknown1, what would be the difference if Ga. Southern took the game? Would you still say they are pimping their program by playing this game, or that the score would be 60-0? How has playing Miami worsened FAMU's football team, or athletic department as a whole? If a team like App. St. played PSU for that amount, would it still be considered a bad business decision? Are we to expect/assume App. State's players to be broke up and sent to the hospital playing in this game? Help me out with the reasoning here?

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

Michigan and APPY ST are in talks to fill MICHIGAN's 12th game.:goof:
Bet they fans are happy.

We still got people crawling into holes using the same ole lame excuses about being pimped by YT as too why we in the SWAC should not play these games.
That ain't nothing but a BS cop out.
If you scurrred then just say it. :shame:

This fall, the same people will be screaming how TOUGH we are.

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

If you can play a BCS school, do it.

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

TP,

You're discounting the availability of scheduling a home game to follow the road game to Penn State. That's $500K one year, and then the home game to make whatever it makes. That game is a stand alone game, and not some game to be packaged into some 2 game scenario. Though doubtful, Bama State could begin scheduling $500K games every year for the next 10 years. Would you still claim that some 2 year scenario is better???

You obviously did not read my post....that fits as the best option.

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

see, that's where you go wrong, because a 1A scheduling a 1AA does not fit that standard.
And even if you "schedule down" the year following a 1A "windfall", you'd still come out on top.

and smart aint the word I would use. More like confused.

I agree....you didn't read my post either.

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

TP,
PLease explain how if this game comes to fruition and ASU gets 500K+, that doesn't amount to a financial windfall.

and rob was right. (and even beyond scheduling a home game the year after PennSt, what if there was another 1 year deal with another BCS school for 500K or so?

Your "two year interval" thing doesnt work at all

I already answered that.

The only way the $500K would be "null and void" (your words) would be if ASU would pay out the arse to bring in a team the following year. Not likely

I just gotta laugh.

I know JSU don't need to try this.
We had people bout to jump off roof-tops at just the mention of traveling to USM.

Go head Bamma..........I ain't mad at ya!!

Again, read what I posted.

Yeah, you would lose money like that but that would be dumb. I would not make a dumb suggestion.

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

I applaud Alabama St. and the other SWAC schools for having the bawlz to play some of these larger schools. All of our schools prostitute ourselves at some point for the big paycheck whether its in football, basketball or some other sport.

Bama State having a decent showing against Penn State could work wonders for the school and the conference. Same with SU playing Houston, FAMU playing Miami, Grambling playing Washington St, J-State playing USM, even when we (TSU) played Vanderbilt last year. I liked the fact that each of these schools will probably hold their own when it comes to playing the big guns.

It's when our schools schedule the D2 teams (especially the ones NO ONE has heard of) for the guaranteed win, this is the problem that I have. It shows that we're not trying to move forward with improving our athletic programs as a whole.

Good luck to Ala. State. I'll be pullin' for ya fa dayum sho!!!

This is the only part I really disagree with. They are not showing bawls. If they lose by 100, it's expected so no big deal. Their "ballsy" game is against Tuskegee and Jacksonville State. Those are the games that will tell them if they are where they need to be.

What sense does it make for a 7th grader to take a college course? Is that balls or just a waste of time?

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

Nah, I wouldn't say do whatever. Just that there's no difference in this game and the pre-season b'ball schedules most HBCUs play. All of those games are routs. So if you're going to be somebody's tune up game, at least get paid handsomely.

It's just in f'ball, the probability of getting your guys broken up is higher.

The chance for injury is ALOT higher in football, wouldn't you say?

:snicker:

but stagga,
Only the 1AA schools in the OVC, Southern, Southland Conference, etc are allowed to schedule these game$. (National champ Fla played Western Carolina last season, Ga Tech played Samford, The Citadel played Tx A&M, UGA played Western Ky and on and on and on

But we're in the SWAC and we might lose or we might get hurt or any benefit we would get from these games might be "null and void" :scared:
:smh::smh:

Well, that is not my argument. They are going to rest most of their starters anyway and let the third string play. My position is that it is dumb and a wasted week for ANY 1-AA to play a 1-A. I just don't see the benefit especially, if you can make the same amount of money minus the embarrassment.

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

I see where Auburn has added OVC member Tennessee Tech to its schedule for the upcoming season.

oh well....

It is smart for the big 1-A's to do this. They get an extra home game and money from 80K fans for a scrimmage. I guess there are not enough Troy State's to go around. Again, since we are sssssssssooooooo excited about taking these azz whoopins, why don't 8 of us go 1-A and play 7 1-A HBCUs and get paid to take FIVE of these azz whoopins per year. I am sure they will be happy to get the new booty if we move up. We may even go 7-0 in conference, end up with a 7-5 record and get to go into a Bowl game for ANOTHER azz whoopin!!

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

was it smart for Tennessee Tech to do it too?

nope....LOL

Then again, 1-AA PWC's don't draw flies...maybe it makes financial sense for them. I don't know their average attendance.

And it makes financial sense for ALL of our schools to do it, too.

Re: Bama State to play Penn State in Football in 2009? . . and here's our 2007 sched

Jackson State's basketball team played 11 of its first 12 games on the road, including games against Georgia Tech, Alabama, Memphis, and Illinois. ESPN showed highlights of Georgia Tech, Alabama, and Memphis running us off the court. The same can be said for other SWAC schools. From November to the end of January, JSU played just 5 of its 22 games at home. That's pathetic and it hurts the program. How can you build home attendance if you are on the whipping tour from November to January. :shame: Alabama State has a chance to make 500,000 off one football game and eliminate the need for its basketball program to play a ton of road money games. This will open up a chance for more home basketball games. A whipping is a whipping. And I would rather take one than 9 or 10.
