Charlie Coe, who served as running back coach at Pittsburgh for four years and as assistant head coach to Johnny Majors for three seasons, is beginning his sixth year at The University of Memphis. Coe, who had worked for three years as running backs coach for the Tigers, was promoted to assistant head coach and receivers coach in 2000.

In 2001, Coe inherited a group of young receivers which included Antoine Harden and Darron White and turned them into one of the most productive groups in Tiger history. White was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team while Harden led the league in average yards per reception in 2001.

While working at the U of M, Coe was responsible for the development of running backs Gerard Arnold and Teofilo Riley. Arnold broke the single season rushing record in 1998 by gaining 1,059 yards and Riley went over 1,000 career yards rushing during the 1998 season and had a team best 190 yards rushing against Arkansas State.

In 1998, Tiger backs gained 1,534 yards rushing, averaging 139.5 yards per game. Arnold had 1,059 yards breaking the 35-year old mark set by the late Dave Casinelli.

Coe, who joined Majors' staff at Pittsburgh in 1993, served as the run offense coordinator for the Panthers for one season. In each of his first two seasons at Pitt, the Panthers had a 1,000 yard rusher- Curtis Martin in 1993 and Billy West in 1994.

Prior to joining the staff at Pitt, Coe coached the receivers and running backs for the University of Tennessee from 1990-92 under Majors. He has also had coaching stints at his alma mater Kansas State (1989), the University of Missouri (1985-88), the University of Louisville (1983-84), Ball State University (1982), the University of Cincinnati (1977-79) and the University of Iowa (1976).

Coe has served a fellowship with the Dallas Cowboys in 1992 and 1996, with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1995 and with the Cleveland Browns in 1994. The 52-year old has also worked with the Kansas City Chiefs and the New York Jets under the NFL Fellowship program. He was named as the offensive coordinator for the North squad in the 1994 Blue-Gray All-Star game.

A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Coe played defensive back and return specialist for Kansas State in 1970. He was named All-Big Eight Conference in baseball as a second baseman in 1971.

He was drafted in the first round of the 1971 Major League Draft by the Detroit Tigers and spent two years in their system. After professional baseball, he entered professional football and spent part of the 1974 season with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Coe is married to the former Debbie Moore and the couple has five children, Rodney, Chuck, Cecily, Michael and Ashleigh.

This guy sounds like an excellent choice. In the long-run, he'll be much better than Cole, IMO.
 



How can you get a coach from the outside this late in the day? It seems as if there was some "method to the madness".

Bama St. made a good hire, but Charlie Coe wasn't currently coaching at U of M he was dismissed after last season.

LOL!! Shaking My Head at that comment!! Boy, I could only imagine what you would be doing in Jackson State University remotely did anything similar to this in their athletic department.
 
Question... is Coe the interim coach or is he the real head football coach.. Did they announce the firing of Coles today??? I thought that a state school had to advertise a head coaching position for a set amount of time (30 days I believe)

University of Memphis football coach Tommy West said Tuesday he has interviewed Johnson 'Jeep' Hunter and Chris Rumph for the two openings on his staff.

Hunter and Rumph likely will be hired by the end of the week.





West interviewed Rumph, who coached defensive backs at South Carolina State in 2002, two weeks ago. He interviewed Hunter, who has spent the past two seasons at Eastern Kentucky, Tuesday.

Rumph, 31, would replace outside linebackers coach Tim Banks, who left the U of M after last season to become the inside linebackers coach at Maryland.

Hunter, 35, would fill the spot vacated by receivers coach Charlie Coe, but work with tight ends. Coe was dismissed from the U of M staff after last season, his sixth with the program.

Reed: Not trying to fire Cole

Alabama State University board of trustees member Joe L. Reed denied accusations that he was behind an effort to have Lawrence "L.C." Cole removed as head football coach.

"The bottom line is the president has to follow the rules and the policy set by the board of trustees," Reed said Sunday. "Public passion and screaming won't deter him. Anybody who tries to blame anybody for the investigation is simply baying at the moon."

Cole's football program has been the target of an ongoing investigation that resulted in ASU self-reporting several alleged rules violations to the NCAA and the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Cole and two of his assistants were suspended Friday by ASU President Joe Lee.

Cole, his attorney Julian McPhillips and former ASU trustee Donald Watkins say the investigation is the result of a political feud between Reed and Watkins.

"It's ridiculous for a person to say that the president shouldn't carry out NCAA rules and board of trustees' rules," Reed said. "Some of these rules were established by Mr. Watkins and some were established by his daddy (a longtime ASU president). To blame me, to bash me, is asinine. It barely deserves comment."

Reed said he was not actively involved with ASU's athletics program.

"I read where Donald (Watkins) said I didn't want Coach Cole to come here," he said. "What I did express at that time was that Mr. Cole had been sanctioned by the NCAA in Nashville (at Tennessee State). I did question that at the board meeting when his name was brought up."

Watkins said that while Tennessee State was investigated and sanctioned by the NCAA, Cole was not implicated.

"I knew that Tennessee State had some trouble. We contacted the chairman of the infractions committee and he said, in writing, that there was no problem with Coach Cole," Watkins said. "There were institutional control issues with the athletic director and president. Before we hired him we wanted assurances in writing that there was no problem with Coach Cole's conduct."

Reed said Alabama State alumni and fans need to wait until the investigation process is complete.

"As most people know, when an allegation is made, whether it's true or false, the NCAA must investigate that complaint," he said. "Alabama State had some complaints and it investigated them. It had a special investigator come in to do that and he made a report to the athletic director, who made recommendations to the president.

"To this day, I can confirm I have not seen the report."

Reed said he expected Lee to appoint an interim coach while Cole served his suspension. Lee has scheduled a press conference for 11 a.m. today.

Bama State is moving their program in the right direction by hiring someone with an impressive resume, even though he is unemployed right now. But someone has to take this job and this is an obvious step up for ASU. They have so far to go to be mediocre in the SWAC. This is the first step.

Frivolities dont excite me. I like things with substance.

I haven't heard that they weren't. But at this point, who knows who'll stay and who'll go.

TRU, all smack aside....

JSU folks, for the most part, do not want Cole to get fired.

Personally, I want him to stay on for, if nothing else, the JSU game! We need to beat this guy on the football field. This dates back to the last 2 years at TSU.

Losing doesn't sit well with JSU fans.... so you can imagine what a 5 game losing streak feels like.

Now, on the outside looking in, I feel that L.C. deserves to be fired for what has taken place within the football program. But as a JSU alumnus, I want him to remain the head coach.

Beating ASU without L.C. does nothing for me. We've dominated them thorougly througout history.

I'd like to beat the man L.C.

It's interesting to me how folks can say that the admin folks at our school are doing "the right thing" without knowing how fickle these fools really are...

:shame: The interim coach has a great resume...Is that going to exempt him from having to put up with the political ishtstorm that our last couple of coaches have dealt with? Not a chance...

Therein lies the problem. The first step, as GR so eloquently put it, is for our alumni to become extremely active in getting board of trustee politics away from the athletic program. That goes for President Lee as well.

anybody who can turn as blind an eye to an athletic program as he has for the past two years needs to have his walking papers handed to him on a silver platter...
