He definitely didn't Lie and the article was filled with some harsh truths. I found most of it funny because you could definitely feel the underlying insults.

That last line about Jackson was Classic LMAO. But like Trent said this article was only written because we hired someone from MSU staff. I doubt it would have been written had we hired Mack. Still on point though.

Pretty much. Had we hired Mack, the article wouldve been filled with questions & doubt. "Can he win?" "can he compete for championships"

Has he not had the desire to be a head coach until now? Has he applied for head jobs but been passed over? What's the deal? Anyone with some backgound on Hughes know the deal? I know he is a great recruiter and will be able to bring great talent to JSU.

And see...that's the thing...The only reason there's an assumption is "JSU got it right" is because Hughes came from a PWI/SEC school. That's the underlying tone.

Nobody knows how this is going to play out. Hughes hasn't been a HC before the same way Spady hadn't been a HC before. Or Fobbs. Or Hopson. This could go either way.

You do not have to hire outside of the SWAC to win in the SWAC. There are a lot of good coaches in the SWAC. However you have to be willing to LOOK outside the SWAC for potential hires. Too many HBCUs seem to limit themselves in the hiring process. The more people you vett and consider, the better your chances of making a good hire are. It is just a matter of numbers. However you do not need to hire someone who thinks they are doing you a favor by taking a job at your school. To me JSU got it right (potentially) by hiring an SEC coach who is from Mississippi and clearly wanted the job and appreciates how good an opportunity it is.

Well, Hughes said it himself that getting a D1 HC job is extremely hard. I think for at least 5 years, he wanted to be a HC. We had to take a chance and hire him which we should've done two years ago. Plus, I wouldn't be in too big of a hurry to leave a $400k salary until the right job came lol

It depends on the stability of the two jobs. His $400k salary as an assistant is not as stable as an head coaching job with a 3 to 5 year contract. I'm sure that $50k any time buyout clause doesn't apply in his case.

It depends on the stability of the two jobs. His $400k salary as an assistant is not as stable as an head coaching job with a 3 to 5 year contract. I'm sure that $50k any time buyout clause doesn't apply in his case.

Yeah. But watching your boss openly express interest in another job probably put some pressure on him lol. Wouldn't be surprised if we had a $100k buyout

I did not say anything about salary or a huge coaching staff. And I never mentioned PWC experience.

Since 2000 (when I began actively following and supporting sTu athletics again) I have been saying coaching (across the board) was the SWAC's Achilles heel. I have always believed we had good to very good to very very good athletes and having competent assistants can never been over looked. When it seemed sTu was about to turn the corner in 2000 the first thing that entered my mind was can we retain our assistants when success peaks in....little did I know that the football players would go crazy after the season so we never found out if losing assistants would play that big of a roll.
