ASU rescinds I-A resolution

The Alabama State Board of Trustees voted Thursday to rescind a two-year-old resolution that authorized the university to move its football program to Division I-A.

Ironically, the decision came the same day former trustee Donald Watkins announced plans to help another historically black college make the same move.

Watkins championed ASU?s decision to become the first historically black college participating in Division I-A. Before the plan could be executed, however, Watkins left the Board due to differences he had with other board members and to pursue the purchase of a major league baseball team.

However, on Thursday, Watkins sent an e-mail to North Carolina A&T State University in which he stated he would be more than willing to help them achieve I-A status and would share with them the information he gathered for the ASU move at a meeting in Birmingham next Thursday.

?I have possession of an enormous amount of materials and documents, gathered at my expense, relating to ASU?s abandoned Division I-A effort,? Watkins wrote. ?It is obvious to me that North Carolina A&T State University has the passion, focus, dedication and determination necessary to be the nation?s first historically black Division I-A athletic program.?

The ASU trustees voted 5-1 to rescind the two-year-old resolution to make the move, but ASU president Joe Lee said the issue wasn?t completely dead.

?We are simply taking it off the table for right now,? he said. ?This doesn?t mean that it won?t happen in the future but taking it off the table right now allows us to focus on the more pressing needs around campus.?

The only Board member to vote against the proposal was Buford Crutcher, who said he felt it was a step backward.

?Anytime you rescind a resolution you?re moving backward,? he said. ?I?m a visionary. I look toward improving this institution in the future and I see this as a step backwards.?

Watkins also questioned the Board?s vision in his e-mail.

?At one time, I thought Alabama State had the vision to become Division I-A in football,? Watkins said. ?However, petty politics on the ASU Board keeps that university trapped in 20th century thinking.?

At the same time, Watkins was pushing the move to Division I-A, he also was in the middle of finding the funding for a new on-campus stadium. He claimed to have backing to totally fund the project but wasn?t taken seriously by the other board members. In his message to A&T, Watkins said he could still get backing to fund its stadium.

?I will introduce you to potential funding sources who were interested in assisting ASU in becoming a Division I-A football program and who also wanted to share in the development of a sports hall of fame and museum for athletes of color,? Watkins said. ?I think you will find it rewarding to meet with corporate sponsors who appreciate progressive thinking, especially at a historically black college.?

A motion offered by ASU trustee Joe L. Reed to rescind the resolution that kept ASU exploring funding for an on-campus stadium failed. Lee said that would cause his office some problems due to a lack of general funding.

?That decision puts me in a precarious position,? he said. ?I?ve got some dormitories that are in need of serious repair. I?ve got buildings that are in need of new air conditioning units. My attention needs to be on these areas and I need to be able to plan strategically for the entire university.?

Crutcher said ASU just needed to tap the community for the funds needed to keep moving forward.

?This is the capital of the state of Alabama,? he said. ?We need to take advantage of our location and generate community support. We?re at the top of the SWAC in five different sports. We need to take advantage of this success and keep moving forward.?

Ok, this is sad... :smh:

Not trying to make jokes but if Mr. Watkins really wants to try and move a HBCU up to D1 why not try someone like JSU, SU, GRAM of FAMU why go to ASU and NCAT?

And why would NCAT deal with this dude after the the ASU drama

 :o  :o

What can I say? What have I heard or read. Let me see.

He has the funding sources and/or connections to pull off the move. He has the money to buy a major league baseball team, Devil Rays, Twins or Angels owned by Disney. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I would bet that a lot of people have told him to show them the money or they'll believe it when they see it. I know I have said it.

 :o  :o

:uhoh:

I too wonder why would A&T deal with this guy.

He is a co-owner of a Bank and he is an Attorney

I think he has the doe. He is one of the board of directors of a bank in which he started, he is an attorney, and there is no telling what type of investments he has made... His bank mostly only deals with Commercial customers so that is no chump change. I think he could do it, but why he chose NC A&T, I am not sure. (NO offense). He chose ASU because he was on the board and he lives in Birmingham. Here are his web sites...

I see he has the right complexion.

I think he chose A&T because we are the most progressive program in black college football and we have the best leadership at the top. Just look at the improvement and upgrades that have taken place on our campus in the last few years since our new AD and Chancellor arrived.

We are also one of the few programs that currently operate in th black and haven't been guitly of any rules violations or scandals.

and because you guys have a wonderful and loyal alumni base. You also have a D-1 level stadium (that I look so forward to attending:D )and so on and so forth.

But seriously, good luck and beware of wolves in sheep's clothing.

I smell a rat! But, I guess that is why he chosed A&T for his business deal. So, what is he getting out of the deal?

.......Yeah, Mach........

........Wishful wasn't the word I would use but here is my "spill" on the whole I-A / I-AA issue.

........I remember back in the late 70's when the G-MEN moved to Division I-A and what did they do????? Changed the rules and created the I-AA because basically they didn't want the HBCU's to be a part of the so-called record books of I-A. Doug came in behind Earl Campbell for the Heisman and was named the first ever HBCU Quarterback to the Kodak All-America Team(Bob Hope was the m.c. for that show on A.B.C. tv). I really think it got to our caucasian folk and consequently those changes were made.

........When(millions of dollars) in money is involved and record books are the issue(remember Eddie Rob's victories) they will go to great lengths to exclude the HBCU. Look at all the changes they want to make and exclude the mid-level I-A PWC's that don't have the average crowds for home games.

.........Believe this>>>>>When you think you got all the answers, no matter how you "think" you will fit-in(to the I-A program), the NCAA will find a way to exclude you!!!!!

.........That why I am a firm believer that we(HBCU) must believe and depend on each other when it comes to the finances of our sporting events. (i.e. renewing old rivalries and classics).

.........That's all I got to say about that!!!!!

Im sure the progressiveness of NCAT&T helped him make his decision. What other HBCU has alredy built a pressbox in 2002?

Please read, then comment

However, on Thursday, Watkins sent an e-mail to North Carolina A&T State University in which he stated he would be more than willing to help them achieve I-A status and would share with them the information he gathered for the ASU move at a meeting in Birmingham next Thursday.

What email are you referring to? According to the above article, Watson was the one who sent the email. No one from A&T has been quoted on this subject yet.

I just think Watson wanted to walk with the big dawgs and he felt A&t was his best bet.

I guess the statement that he would be, "more than willing", means that somehow someone asked if he was intrested. Thats all.

Anyone program that places their belief in Watkins must really be desperate. What has he done besides talk?? Where is Bama State's new stadium?? Where is that MLB team he was supposedly buying. If he's so rich, why didn't he put up any of his own money to seeing the Bama State projects go through? I imagine he contacted A&T because they were the only team dumb and smalltime enough to give him the time of day.

Smalltime?

Does JSU even have it's own on-campus stadium?

Does JSU even support it's own head coach?

Has JSU made any improvement or upgrades to its facilities in the last five years?

Does JSU's athletic department operate in the black?

Does JSU even offer the maxium amount of scholarships for it's footbll program?

Jagster,

If I emailed Hale Berry, saying that I would be "more than willing" to twist her back out, does that necessarily means she is interested in me also? No, that just means I want to be down with the best.

If A&T was seriously considering Watson's proposal don't you think we would have scheduled a face to face, sit-down meeting with him? All he did is send us some exploritory email proposal and everyone is suddenly jumping to conclusions now.

Say Man,

I could give a flying **** if he or A&T sent the email. I wouldn't start off communication for this proposal using email at all, why not FedEx to schedule a meeting? It just seemed to me that his email was a result of a question that was asked of him. How that question was brought to him is unknown.

By the way, who is "everyone". I'm trying to defend Watson and A&T. I have no conclusion whatsoever, I'm a Southern fan & supporter, so I don't build conclusions about other HBCU athletic departments and how they should move towards thier future. However, I do like rational thinking, and this seems a rational thought.

I still don't see why you think A&T asked Watson for his input. We are never quoted in the above article with any statement that supports or even shows interest in his proposal. Watson doesn't even say that he was sending this email as a result of a request on A&T's part. All the article said was that Watson would be willing to help A&T go 1-A. He thought that of all the HBCUs, we had the best chance to pull it off. Obviously, no one at A&T really knows who he is or they would have scheduled a formal meeting or at least a conference telephone call with him. Sending an email shows that you are just trying to introduce yourself to someone or get your foot in the door. For instance: I send email to people I try to pass my dumb ideas off on. Most times they never respond.

For you to read the above article and believe that A&T sought out Watson's help is not rational thinking. There's nothing that supports that line of thinking whatsover. Your thinking is irrational.

The reason is similar to your not understanding my thought. I don't see why an individual with no background in A&T would simply email that school and offer to assist them in enlarging the scope of their athletic program. I just have to wonder, "...why A&T...", unless he was asked that question previously to the email being sent. How does he know that A&T is intrested in going to D1-A? Your attendance record is decent at 16,254 but can that tell someone to call your school and offer to move them up to a higher level. Especially since that would put A&T at 104 out of 122 D1-A schools in attendance.

But hey Im sorry for this response from you for simply trying to give this an open eye.

Attendance is not the only factor. We also have better facilites that most HBCUS, progressive-minded leadership at the top, and a successful, winning program. We also currently operate in the black, which is more than most schools in the SWAC can claim. Plus we have an impeccable national reputation. You've never heard of A&t's football program being guilty of any NCAA rule violations or wrong doing.

All things considered, A&T is pound for pound the healthiest BCF program in America right now. Other schools may be strong in one or two areas, but we're the only one that currently has all our ducks in a row.

I think Watson just opened his eyes and saw the biggest kid on the block. He wants to take some black school 1-A and A&t seemed like his best bet. I can't fault him on that. I just doubt if our administration is interested in going that direction right now.

The last time our AD commented on the situation he said we were not.

progressive-minded leadership....impeccable national reputation.......All things considered, A&T is pound for pound the healthiest BCF program in America right now..... but we're the only one that currently has all our ducks in a row.

SAAAAAAAAAAAYS WHO?????

Talk about creative writing......Sheeeesh. Must everyone in NC use cover words to describe how much you really suck? Hey Thrilla....which one of those progressive minded leaders though that is was time to add a pressbox to the stadium in the 21st century? And I would love to see the one that decides that its time to do better than that ladder the coaches use to get to the uuuuh uuuuuh "pressbox..wink wink"

Scott Gramellion, when did you move to Carolina and why are you teaching these folks how to sugar coat the truth?
