Arkansas - Pine Bluff vs Southern: Game Updates

Here is what i saw on the first down when the ball was spiked it actually didn't count because it was spiked before the ball was spotted for play therefore it wasn't a down , there was about 35 sec on the clock after the first down catch by jones. this play didn't count so when the ball was spotted the clock started and ran down to 25 secs before pb realized what was going on and called time out they too thought the ball had been spiked. on first down after the timeout they ran left with the tailback. on second down they ran wallace towards the middle of the field and let the clock run to 10 before calling their second time out. on third down they attempted the fg but because the ball didn't cross the LOS on the kick and pb recovered it, it is there ball at the spot recovered pb then used their final timeout. pb then kicked the winning fg on fourth down . Game over. No fifth down

Well there was no explanation given by the refs. From my vantage point, it appeared that the ball was spotted in play, then spiked. But still, assuming there was no 5th down, the game still should have ended on the blocked FG because the clock should not have been stopped. Actually PB was out of time outs. There was a time out used earlier in the drive before the long pass. They used the 2nd time out after "2nd down", and the last time out after "3rd down" to set up the FG try. Still, what's done is done, it's a shame the game was taken from us the way it was, but it can't be undone now.

And let me further add that it was our own lack of discipline that made the controversy a possibility. Had we not celebrated to that extent, at best, UAPB would have had a 50 yd FG try or a Hail Mary.

Golden Lions win after wild scramble at finish

PINE BLUFF, Ark. ? Though Southern celebrated wildly twice in the final 65 seconds Saturday night at Golden Lion Stadium, one of those cost the Jaguars dearly and Arkansas-Pine Bluff got the final celebration.

Brodie Heflin?s 32-yard field goal snuck inside the left upright with no time remaining to set off the Golden Lions? jubilation over a 23-21 victory and sank the Jaguars? sideline, which moments earlier thought their victory was at hand.

SU had overcome a 20-point deficit and scored twice in the final 10 minutes, including a 96-yard touchdown drive to finally go ahead by a point with 1:05 to play, with the offense dancing as the players rushed off the field.

Then, defensive end Vince Lands blocked Heflin?s 30-yard try with 10.6 seconds remaining, with Heflin recovering at the UAPB 32-yard line.

Here?s where things turned even more wild.

SU?s players came off the bench and some took off their helmets. That drew a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and stopped the clock with 2.6 seconds left.

Meanwhile, because UAPB had attempted the field goal on third down and recovered the block, the Golden Lions still had possession.

So Heflin came back out, with those 2.6 seconds remaining, and made the game-winner.

?We blocked the kick and got undisciplined. That 15 yards cost us,? said Southern coach Pete Richardson, who lectured his team with the same lesson as they gathered around him. ?(The referee) said they recovered the ball and it was only third down. We played a good football game, and they came up and made the plays at the end they had to make.?

And when did what goes on at Georgia start being the standards for what happens in the SWAC?

Secondly the call was made after everybody in the stadium (with common sense) thought the game was over and PB coach ran onto the field politicking (sp )for a call while his players were leaving along with the refs.

But really it's no big deal it's just another loss. I think most people on here are simply voicing what they and many others have all year and have move beyond petty self serving position, (especially when it doesn't change your position in the conference) in hope to create a better SWAC

When Georgia scored its 1st touchdown against Florida, the entire team ran out on the field, many took off their helmets, and celebrated. They got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

You ask about STANDARDS? PLEASE! This is the problem with the SWAC, STANDARDS simply is NOT HIGH enough. I'm shocked you even said that.

It doesn't matter HOW MUCH time is remaining, it doesn't matter how many people thought the game was over, if you take your helmet off on the field during regulation play, its a penalty in the SEC, Big 10, Big 12, and yes EVEN THE SWAC.

?We blocked the kick and got undisciplined. That 15 yards cost us,? said Southern coach Pete Richardson.

Discipline,? Southern quarterback Bryant Lee said. ?That last play of the game hurt us on the field goal. Just discipline.?

I read the comments when I came in from the game. I saw what happened on the field. I did not post because I knew that Baton Rouge's own The Advocate was going to explain what happened. Southern just got caught up in the excitement, lost focus and forgot what the situation was on the field.

Also it was a great game. The attendance would have been higher if it were not for the CONVOCATION in Memphis this weekend. But 12,415 fans is pretty good after a homecoming game.

Great win PB..
Great come back JAGUARS

OK after reading the articles I don't see an issue.

Well there are a couple issues. The 1st down do-over was never explained to our sideline until after the first FG try. The second issue is that PB was out of time outs, so they couldn't have stopped the clock after the 1st FG was blocked. The officials stopped the clock, then we were flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after the fact. If it was 3rd down as they're saying, then the clock should not have been stopped, making the first FG try the last play of the game. But again, we're as much to blame as the incompetent officials for running on the field. Without that, at best they get a long FG try or a hail mary with 2 seconds left. But still, we can't change what's happened now.

But it says the kick happened at 10.6 seconds and the clock was stopped for the penalty at 2.6. They didn't stop it after the try they stopped it after 8 seconds. Again....I'm just going by the articles.

Yes, because it took that long for the them to recover the kick. What they're going by is the rule that states that the ball is dead after the kicking team recovers a kick that has crossed the neutral zone, which is basically the line of scrimmage. The issue with that is that Lands was at least 3 yards in the backfield when he blocked the kick, and it went flying backwards. Also, since PB snapped and spiked the ball on 1st down before it was declared in play, there also should have been a 5 yard penalty against them.
