See, when you put on a uniform, you are never just representing yourself. You are representing the institution and everything associated with it. When you get in a fight, guess who they identify first? THE SCHOOL...then the player's name.

And yet, the same people who say the players don't owe us anything.....are the same people who criticize me and others for speaking out on the wrongs of SWAC Football and bringing attention to them. Anybody that has ever played sports knows the worst thing a coach can do to a player is not speaking or even looking at him after they mess up. And yet....you want me to donate my time and money to players who feel they don't have to represent my institution to upmost prestige, class, and achievement?

Who said you had an "obligation"????? When you attend your school's sport events, it is your own personal choice. If you don't like the return, in which, the players and coaches give, don't go to the event. Give your money to the school through academics or something else. Like someone stated before, the student "chose" to attend your school, so why should he or she owe you or anyone else something outside of themselves?! Not every student-athlete that attends your school is on a full ride (some on partial scholarships that only cover tuition), so they may feel like you owe them too since they can't afford to attend, but yet they "chose" your school. See, your WRONGS are pointing out that the coaches and/or players owe you something, but what about schools that have a good product on/off the field, but no arses in the stands as some SWAC schools do! Yes, they should represent the school well. Yes, the "media" always identify the school first when there is a fight. But you tell me one school that is judge by the majority by the assessments of their student-athletes?! If that was the case, ALL SCHOOLS would not hold "upmost prestige, class, and achievement"!!!

I certainly don't think JSU players are lazy, especially not in football. We put enough fire to our coaches azzez and they transfer that heat accordingly. :lol:

Kendrick, every university has set standards a student-athlete must abide by if he/she wants to continue enjoying the benefits of a free scholarship. If that student athlete fails to follow specific standards, they lose their scholarship and they could leave a negative mark on the school.
Is it okay for that student to leave a negative mark on the school because of his behavior? I think not. They do at least owe that much to their school.

Then you have the issue of walk ons, who turn out to be great players and cogs on the team.

All of the students that are flooding these schools you listed are not going solely based off of student-athletes that you feel owe you something. If that was the case, these instances would have affected "the majority" based off of their student-athletes!

That's what they owe to themselves and the university for providing that scholarship. No one is saying they don't owe EFFORT.

I doesn't matter if you never attend one sporting event or if you don't give a dime, they still owe it to you. Those kids at JSU have the PRIVILEDGE to have JSU on their chests because of those who came before them. By the same token, we owe them our support. This owing thing really goes full circle.

You can't separate the two. Again, what would a JSU football game be like with zero fans there? Would the administration support us having a D1 team? Probably not. Would kids even want to play in the band or be cheerleaders just to play for themselves every week? You can't separate the alums from the university. Everybody in the circle owes something from the admins, the alums, the coaches, the players, etc...

You can separate the type of obligation the students have to each group that makes up the school.

Don't the bands, cheerleaders and athletes play for themselves anyway? Athletes still have aspirations of going to the next level and participate for the love of the sport. I mean, kids right now play football at JUCOs and DIII school were friends and family make up the attendance figures.

Every point you TRIED to make is hilariously wrong. Mainly because you miss the underlying point that if the fan support was not there, the money would not be there. Yes, the administration supports us being D1 on a level above many universities in the US. Without alumni involvement/concern, that would all change.

And I can speak only for myself, but I don't care about them for only what they provide us. But at the same time, you act as if we don't provide them with anything. You are still quite the journalist. If a player is only playing for themselves, then they don't know the meaning of sports. Same for Olympians. They should not be in it for themselves but for the pride of their country.

All athletes, and people for that matter, are self-centered by nature. Everyone looks out for numero uno. Don't believe that B.S. about playing for school or country. Those statements are made to appease the gullible.

And how do you know this is true across the board? Last I heard, Olympian athletes don't get paid, they risk bodily injury and they risk losing and embarassment. Your theory is seriously flawed and supported by little to no evidence.
