Are HBCUs missing the ball when it comes to recruiting top talent?


AAMU basketball just signed a 3 star basketball player and multiple 2 stars in football
 



Three stars are four stars in the swac.. folks raved over our qb signee Adams and was completely shocked we'd have two 3 star qbs, and one 2 star qb on the same roster. Our roster is full of two stars tho. I'll cherish the day when any one of our schools gets a 4/5 star kid.

Our schools have started signing 2 and 3 stars for a while now (which is what we should be doing. Gotta crawl before you walk) but I am assuming that the poster is talking about 4- star athletes. Most of our schools offer 4 stars but it's just a matter of them signing. I think with all the recent racial issues at the big schools and more of these cats are waking up to see how these schools are pimping them (and before a certain person comes to the thread being contrary, I know our schools use them to some point), it's only gonna be a matter of time before 1 or 2 will be that person to sign with one of our schools and that will open the door for more.
 
This is the reason why when ESPN comes to town we have to schedule our best teams to be on television. These top star kids want to be on TV.

I know a top recruit from Louisiana who said he would rather ride the bench at Alabama for two years than to be a starter as a freshman at GSU because he wants to be on TV. That was dumb to me because schools like Alabama have recruits that can step up at any time and with the smallest injury a guy can be so far back on the depth chart until it is ridiculous.

Another issue is facilities. The SWAC is getting some great facilities but let's face it some of the high schools have better facilities than us. That GSU boycott in my opinion hurt GSU's recruitment for a few years. The image rebuilding has been hard work for Broderick (Coach Fobbs) and company but they are making strides.

Another issue is the potential deals with Nike, Addidas, and Under Armour. Our presidents need to hire adequate AD's and let them do their jobs. Many presidents are academicians and try to prove a theory rather than operating like a business. When GSU's president attempted to explain why he did go forward with the Addidas deal he placed emphasis on what the conference as a whole wanted rather than worrying about how the deal would benefit GSU. Sometimes you have to think about yoursel first.

Another issue is high schools using college facilities TOO MUCH. I know this has been a problem for Grambling High basketball players. They play in GSU's gym. Get dressed in the dressing room. They don't want to play at GSU because they have had that experience. One guy said "man I have dunked in there so many times I wanna dunk someplace else." Again another dumb sounding player. Yet, it does affect recruitment.

Now I will say that the The Eddie Robinson High School Football Classic is becoming one of the top recruiting tools for GSU.

The first annual Eddie G. Robinson High School Football Classic will be held at Robinson Stadium on Saturday, August 29, 2015. The five participating teams are Carroll Bears (Monroe), Delhi Bears (Delhi), General Trass Panthers (Lake Providence), Grambling Tiger Kittens (Grambling), Richwood Rams (Monroe), and Wossman Wildcats (Monroe). The game times are 3pm, 5pm, and 7pm. The GSU World Famed Tiger Marching Band will be featured as well as a high school "Battle of the Bands" in the stands.

In Texas half the population thinks tsu and PV look alike and are next door to each other so you got to get them on campus earlier than normal

To me Javancy is a 4 star, that dude is half the front line by himself, sometimes that star thing is overrated ijs

That's far from it with a lot of local kids in our college towns. Those kids want to get away from the area. They've been there all their lives and want a new environment.

Yea I feel you. Which I agree. Yet, these kids don't think on that level.

God yes. When I think of the talent at Southern Lab over the years that already played in Mumford and wanted a new experience .... hell, I wanted to throw them out of Mumford for that very reason. Then, when EBR talent was really good and before LSU was the LSU they are now, you had kids who wanted to be apart of bringing SU up and then those who just wanted to get away from it all, which made sense, but screwed both local schools until we went outside the city and state.

And now, SU gets railed about not having local recruits (even though the current staff has done a great job of getting area kids) .... stupid cycle.

I think we both said the same thing. Grambling High basketball players want to get away because they play every game in the Hobdy Assembly Center.

Bruh is SU and GSU recruited locally they would be top SWAC teams yearly. Let me rephrase....RECEIVED recruits locally.

I know for a fact, if SU could win the SWAC with a BR/NO/River Parish team lol. Back in the 80's and 90's recruits would pick SWAC over D 1's. Now we lose them to LaTech, ULL, Tulane, and all those Power 5's, outside the Sec, that come in Louisiana and get Talent. Can't speak for Gram, but SU should never lose a recruit to in state FCS schools. Our facilities are >.

The same thing being said at Valley (it was said on here by "them" when you can go up and down the roster and see a lot of Mississippi players (especially Greenwood)). This year Valley has now started offering a lot of local talent (within 2 hours) including a 3-star MSU commit, 3 star RB and a 2 star lineman out of St Joe that has yet to commit.

You'd be surprised how the "star" rankings work. Our SWAC signees actually lose a star or rating if they're close to signing with a SWAC school. Why do you think 247Sports hasn't updated the 'signed' or 'committed' recruits for SWAC schools? Rivals was a little better but they've phased out FCS schools.

Lab ok but the other high school a mile down the street is the one.

No lie, I witnessed someone trying to ream Southern for not having more players from Southern Lab on the team. I'm like, you don't think that after spending their entire K-12 life on the Southern campus for school, playing football games in Mumford, and playing some basketball games in the mini-dome that they might want to try some place different? lol

We missed out on one kid that went
FBS, but we cleaned up at Lab.
 
It's too much talent in Baton Rouge, JSU got a nice pick-up with that kid from Belaire

Honestly the star-rank system is a joke, what is the major difference in a 4 star recruit QB than a 3 star QB recruit? Can one really tell...hell no

I say this all the time, shat comes from slavery, when owners use to bid on slaves and mark them to increase the owner's value in a sense.

I'll used Willie Quinn, dude could go and play in the slot position any where in the country.

I wonder what he was rated coming out of HS (anyone know is ranking?)

The rated system is a joke, now granted there are some good players that a truly good, but I again look at the whole picture, who are their competitors, will they pan out in college, etc..it's just too much to go by just giving a player a 5 star mark..
