Austin Peay set to return to OVC in ?07: Governors would give Gamecocks 9th OVC opponent

The presidents of the Ohio Valley Conference did Jacksonville State a huge football scheduling favor earlier in the week, but they might have created another problem for the conference.

Austin Peay is bringing back scholarship football and the OVC presidents Wednesday approved the Governors rejoining the football alignment in 2007. The Govs, who played OVC football until 1997, have been playing non-scholarship Division I-AA football in the Pioneer League.

That leaves Morehead State as the only conference member not playing scholarship football. There is speculation that with Austin Peay moving up, the Eagles will be pressured into following suit.

The inclusion of Austin Peay brings the OVC football race to 10 teams. The advantage to JSU is it provides the Gamecocks one fewer game to find on its yearly schedule.

JSU president Bill Meehan already has asked athletic director Jim Fuller to schedule the Governors in 2006 in anticipation of the expansion.

"It?s great for me," said Fuller, who scrambled to make a 10-game schedule this year and is still hunting two games for 2005. "I?ve got three dates I can plug them in right now."

But while it solves a problem for the Gamecocks, it has the potential to create another for the OVC. As it stands now, the OVC plays an eight-game conference schedule, but Tennessee State rotates off one team every year in an 11-game schedule to accommodate its lucrative historically black college Classic games.

This year, the Tigers played four Classics, forcing them to skip Tennessee Tech in conference play. With JSU losing at Tennessee Tech, the schedule quirk had the potential to affect the Gamecocks? OVC title defense. Under the current alignment and scheduling philosophies, TSU would be able play all eight conference teams only in seasons with 12-game schedules.

The NCAA is considering a permanent 12-game schedule, but if the Tigers continue to play four Classics, they still would be forced to skip one OVC team in a 10-team, nine-game conference schedule. It would be two teams if the 11-game schedule stands.

Fuller said he didn?t know how the conference would address that issue and admitted he was "concerned" about it.

"Personally, I think they ought to play the schools or find another conference," he said. "But as an AD, I?ve got to tolerate it. I don?t think you should have a school in our conference that?s not playing (all) the schools.

"If we had a school interested in coming in and (it) not have football, that would be the biggest mistake we could make. If I felt that way, why shouldn?t I feel that way about a school in our conference?"

"Personally, I think they ought to play the schools or find another conference," he said. "But as an AD, I?ve got to tolerate it. I don?t think you should have a school in our conference that?s not playing (all) the schools.

WELL SAY WHAT YOU SAYING THEN

MY MAN IS RIGHT...

How is a schools AD who JUST got in a conference going to make a statement like that. He is the new kid on the block.

I with Get Ready on this issue.

"Personally, I think they ought to play the schools or find another conference," he said. "But as an AD, I?ve got to tolerate it. I don?t think you should have a school in our conference that?s not playing (all) the schools.

I agree with this assessment.

I agree with what was said... I think I just dont agree with WHO said it. If it would have been someone from a school who had been in the conference for some time, I would have looked at it different... Maybe the JSU AD is still upset because AAMU dropped their game with JSU to play Tenn State.

Old Boy is still upset that the conference couldn't make TSU get out of playing A&M.

Logically speaking, what difference does it make who said it. So you are saying that JSU is not smart enough to make a statement that a 6 year old could make cause they havent been in the conference long enough? And someone else is saying that JSU is mad at TSU cause A&M didnt play JSU 2 years ago?
hhhmmmm....We got some issues.

GR knows us folks in the SWAC aint use to this, but folks in other conferences....well they tend to do things the right way. All of them dont line up for a bunch of crap like we do. Their ADs dont line up with some stupid Commissioner as if they dont have time to speak up for whats right.

If Tenn cant follow the same guidelines as everyone else, they need to get out of the conference and go where the HBCUs are and leave the OVC alone. Im sure there are a 2 HBCU conferences that would love to have them. TSU would be a serious upgrade for both conferences.

"Fuller said he didn?t know how the conference would address that issue and admitted he was "concerned" about it. "

So what, ain't crap gonna change, we are going to continue to play our classics, we "TSU" can do that. He forgot that OVC football ain't squat without TSU.

- that why we are TSU.

It is important to note who made the statement. Tennessee St. had this arrangement with the OVC before Jax State entered the conference. If Jax State thought the arrangement was unfair or improper, it should have addressed the question before it applied for, or accepted, membership in conference. For my part, Jax St.'s acceptance of the membership, with the knowledge that the conference had that arrangement for Tenn. State, is tantamount to approval of that arrangement. No one ought to listen now to any johnny-come-lately complaint made by Jax St..

Tenn. State is following the guidelines set up by the conference. There have been no complaints from the OVC, of which I am aware. The OVC obviously wanted Tenn. State as a member of the conference, but understood the need to accomodate TSU's desire to play classic games. If the guidelines had put as much a burden on the conference as Jax St. seems to imply, I doubt the conference would have conceded that arrangement to TSU. Jax St. needs to stop whinning about everthing, and go find some non-conference teams it can play every year.

JXSU AD and anyone else must be a nut if they think TNST would give up the below to accomodate their country backwoods hillbilly arse:

Tennessee St. Florida A&M 25-SEP-04 67712
Tennessee St. Jackson St. 18-SEP-04 55015
Tennessee St. South Carolina St. 02-OCT-04 51082

Oh yea..........This is who Mr "Cholly" would prefer them playing:

Tennessee St. Murray St. 20-NOV-04 4864
Tennessee St. Samford 23-OCT-04 5041
Eastern Ill. Tennessee St. 30-OCT-04 5422
Tenn.-Martin Tennessee St. 09-SEP-04 7019

:lmao:

Oracle,

I hate to speak for Get Ready. But this is to easy. I am sure Get Ready understands that. But just like rules where changed once expansion took place the can be changed again by the body of OVC presidents voting the change to take place.

Remember this happen with Western Kentucky when they had to make a decision because the OVC created and then voted for measure that stated all members would have fully participate in the all sports in the OVC if the conference offered that sport.

Based on the changed of the rules made by the OVC presidents, Western Kentucky decided to the leave conference because they had a choice and the desire to remain a member of the SunBelt Conference in all sports except for which the play at teh NCAA Division I AA level in the Gateway Football Conference.

So, rules can be changed for what the presidents of the conference believe are in the overall best interest of said conference.

JROCK,

Tennessee St. Jackson St. 18-SEP-04 55015
Tennessee St. South Carolina St. 02-OCT-04 51082

Of course, but what good do these numbers do for Jacksonville State's athletic director? Especially, if in many years when they do not get the benefit of that traveling fans base coming to Jacksonville State University.

I?m surprised to hear those comments from JSU?s AD. Considering how we were the biggest gate this year. Not Samford, their long time rival. Not homecoming. But TSU. I think he's still a little hurt, we took A&M off their schedule.

I think the other AD?s in the OVC realize how many people we bring to their stadiums. That's why you really don't hear anyone else complaining. We are to the OVC, what SU & JSU are to the SWAC. A payday.

JSU AD is right. Why do I have to play more conference games than anybody else. I would care if they had 4 classic games they could play, that leaves them with 7 games and therefore I should only play 7. If I play 8, I expect everyone to play 8.

Whats right is simply what is right.

Jafus:

It is good that you speak up for Get Ready. He's been beat down so much over the last two seasons that he has no will to fight back. He should be thankful for the good fortune to have you willing to do it for him.

I agree with you that the conference can change rules if the majority of schools believe that change will benefit the conference. But I also agree with tsutiger that TSU is an important addition to the conference, and it is unlikely that the conference will mandate any change that would make it financially unfeasible for TSU to remain in the conference. The conference more than likely agreed to that arrangement because it was necessary to get TSU to join in the first place. It would be short-sighted to now do something that would cause TSU to leave.

I totally disagree with Sperm. There is a doctrine called "coming to the nusiance," which essentially means that you cannot move to an area that contains a nuisance and than demand that the nuisiance be removed. IF it was there before you got there, and if you could not accept it, you should not have moved there. This is exactly the situation with Jacksonville State. They knew, or should have known, about the way the OVC operated with TSU before they joined the conference. If they didn't like it, or opposed it, they should not have joined the conference. I have no sympathy for someone who does something with the knowledge that it will have certain consequences, and then complain when the consequences occur. I have heard enough complaints from Jacksonville State over the years.

At the root of this complaining is the notion that things ought to be the way they want, when they want it. They think they are entitled to dictate how, when, and the circumstances, of any interaction with HCBU. They can't stand it when they are helpless to bring about the situation that they want. They have just joined the conference, and now they think they should dictate how TSU operate within the conference, even TSU has been in the conference for years, and all existing members have accepted the arrangement with TSU. That's unmitigated gall, if you ask me.

I'm no apologist for these arrogant Jacksonsville State people. When we did not like playing them, we dropped them. If they can't stand the OVC arrangement with TSU, they are free to find another conference.

I doubt that Get Ready will ever, not be able to fight back. He may just decide to ignore people rather than deal with them.

I am glad to read you understand the principle of my debate. However it is untrue that the OVC agreed to the arrangement because it was probably necessary to get Tenessee State University to join the OVC. It actually did not come up until after expansion of the conference took place to bring members up to 9 conference members (requiring 8 conference games) from 7 before Jacksonville State and Samford joined the conference after Western Kentucky left the conference a couple years before because the OVC president created a new mandate that required all members to play all conference sports with-in the conference if the conference offered the sport.

I totally disagree with Sperm. There is a doctrine called "coming to the nusiance," which essentially means that you cannot move to an area that contains a nuisance and than demand that the nuisiance be removed. I respectfully disagree. Once you become a member of an organization you have every right and every priviledge any other member of that organization has. Obviously the organizational membership brought you in the organization because they believed you brought something to the table. Jacksonville State University's athletic directors has every right to look out for the best interest of his athletic program and the OVC. If believe something is incorrect with the direction of the conference he needs to state it and should state it in the proper matter according to the conferences guidelines. Then the only question becomes whether he has a legit argument that warrants one or more of the other members to take a look and furthermore does he have enough expertise in gaining the convergence of the membership to act on his argument or concerns. If they do - things will change, if they do not - things will not change.

At the root of this complaining is the notion that things ought to be the way they want, when they want it. They think they are entitled to dictate how, when, and the circumstances, of any interaction with HCBU. They can't stand it when they are helpless to bring about the situation that they want. Becareful, again this is not true, so your argument is flawed. I disagree with your premise. This arrangement again did not take place until after the expansion of the OVC with Jacksonville State and Samford for the 2003-2004 athletic calendar. So, the rule has only been on the OVC books for a couple of years. It was not until this season that it was necessary. Because in 2003 every NCAA Division I football member was allowed by the NCAA to play a 12 game scheduling slate.

I'm no apologist for these arrogant Jacksonsville State people. When we did not like playing them, we dropped them. If they can't stand the OVC arrangement with TSU, they are free to find another conference.
