Re: Anyone else intrigued by Valley's football hype and Comegy's work thus far?
Gregory Black is a great O-Line coach. He's going to have Valley's line in shape for the season. For some reason, it took Comegy about 4 years to bring Black to JSU - don't ask me why. We wasted a lot of time with the other guy.
As for Comegy and Valley - he was a good hire for them. If Harold Jackson falls on his face(not likely), he'll look like a great hire. But it was past time for him to move on at JSU. And for those who wonder why there's so much attention from JSU on these Valley threads, it's because this situation is pretty much unprecedented. We aren't used to seeing a former JSU coach at another school - much less an instate rival. Last time that happened was when TnSt stole the great John Merritt in the 60s. Plus we've spent the better part of 8 years evaluating Comegy. We know him better than any school. So yes we're interested in what Comegy's doing at Valley. But don't mistake that for fear. We let him go for a reason.
Is it me, or was the title of this thread changed?
Anyway, JSU folks most likely have their reasons for bashing Comegy, (but from the outside looking in), I feel that Valley made the best hire of the FCS 2014 season. Comegy has proven that he can recruit and win games. A program like Valley can only improve with a head coach with the type of recruiting game like Comegy.
I know Trigger Man talks of them being young, but it's a good thing that the SWAC is not a conference where youth or experience plays a major factor in results on the field. The SWAC is a matter of who shows up to play and a battle of who wants to win the most.
The depth chart of Valley will be much improved under Comegy. You can already see how he is attacking needs. Valley has a nice group of lineman coming in for the 2014 season if they aren't already in summer school.
Tuskegee and Jackson State have both shown us that Gregory Black knows how to get an offensive line to play at a high level. Even though the scores didn't speak much, Black had JSU's offensive line looking solid against FBS teams Mississippi State and Tulane.
