A Texas Southern University student found slain in his southeast Houston apartment Thursday had not been heard from since he was supposed to pick up a person he met in an Internet chat room earlier this week, family members said.

The man, identified by a cousin as Cornelius Ray, 24, had not been heard from for several days by the time his body was found about 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Crescent City Apartments, 8501 Broadway.

Houston homicide investigators declined to say how Ray was killed, but his cousin, Shereka LaDay, 24, said he was beaten, shot in the back of the head and found wrapped in a sheet.

Ray's computer, TV and car were stolen, she said.

His car, a green Mazda 626, was recovered in northeast Houston before Ray's body was found, police said. Investigators will examine the vehicle for evidence.

Ray had met someone in a computer chat room Jan. 7 and was supposed to pick up that person Sunday, LaDay said.

Ray's apartment shows signs of a struggle, but no neighbors reported seeing or hearing anything suspicious, said Houston police Sgt. Mike Scott.

"There is evidence inside that makes us think he came into contact with a person (that) he brought back here, and some time this past Sunday, he was killed," Scott said.

Ray, a junior studying business management, was from La Marque, his cousin said.

The homicide is the second of a TSU student in just over a month.

A stray bullet killed Ashley Sloan Dec. 4 in the parking lot of a campus apartment complex in the 3500 block of Blodgett. Alex Morris, 24, has been charged with murder in her death.
