A&M to get bite back, Jones vows

HUNTSVILLE Anthony Jones didn't grade himself against the football teams in the Southern Intercollegiate Conference or even the rest of Division II when he was at Morehouse College. The former Maroon Tigers coach used a taller measuring stick.

"When you start looking at the Sheridan Black College Poll, I wanted to be in the top 10 when I was at Morehouse," said Jones, who was introduced Thursday as the new football coach at Alabama A&M. "Last year, I think we were seventh, something like that, and this year we were tied for 10th.

"There were only three or four teams in there that were Division II programs," he recalled. "Everyone else was I-AA. I'd go after I-A and I-AA student-athletes. That's how we were successful in turning our program around."

Bulldog faithful hope Jones can pull off a similar turnaround with an A&M team that finished 4-7 in 2001 after playing in the HealthSouth SWAC Championship Game a season earlier.

Athletics Director James Martin Sr. fulfilled one bit of paperwork as Thursday's conference began, handing Jones a contract to sign.

"Don't read it, just sign it," Martin joked. "Now that's the mark of a good head football coach."

Jones, signing the document, completed Martin's thought: "Follow my athletic director's lead."

The new coach agreed to a four-year contract with a base value of about $100,000. He can make more money with incentive clauses, including making it to the SWAC championship game and winning classic games.

Jones makes additional money through his weekly TV and radio shows. He also gets a new car every year, the first one being a Ford Expedition.

"I'm going to tell my kids how we're going to work and I'm going to roll up my sleeves, just like they are, and we're going to work," the coach said. "I think (fans) can expect to see an offense that is very diverse. The ball will be thrown all over the field (but) we're going to go into the fight with both hands. We're going to be a team that can run the ball and throw the ball."

The 41-year-old declined to say which of the current assistant coaches at A&M would remain on his staff. Citing the importance of loyalty, he said his staff will likely be a mixture of current assistants and those who coached with him at Morehouse.

Jones becomes the latest to walk through the near revolving door to the head football coach's office. He becomes the sixth coach in the past 12 years, following Ron Cooper (22-23 in four seasons), Ken Pettiford (19-14 in three seasons), Reggie Oliver (4-7 in one season), Ray Bonner (9-17-1 in 2? seasons) and George Pugh (17-12 in 2? seasons).

But the former Maroon Tigers coach has experience walking through a revolving door. He was the fourth coach in four years and the seventh hired in the'90s when he took over at Morehouse.

"You take an 0-11 program and whip it into shape, I don't care if you're in peewee ball, you've done a great job," Martin said.

The Maroon Tigers won two games in Jones' first season. They followed that with back-to-back eight-victory campaigns and he won back-to-back coach of the year honors in the SIAC.

Any photos? Interested to see what this dude looks like. I like to get an early start on my smack material.

Congratulations. Seems like the search and hiring process went smoothly. I'm sure Mighty Dog had a lot to do with that!

I was looking for a picture also... If I was to see him today, I wouldnt know who he was.

He's a good coach. He was our offensive coordinator/tight ends and receivers/ strength and conditioning coach at SCSU while I was there from 93 to 97. He'll institute a good strength and conditioning program. I know he likes to spread it out and throw the ball, but I'm sure he took some of Coach Jeffries running philosophies with him when he went to Morehouse. I haven't seen any of his Morehouse teams play, but from the job he did in turning that program around, I think AAMU will be alright.

Morehouse did not have to play Alcorn, the Big three, and TNState. Lets see how he adjusts.

He has probably never faced a coach who cheats like LC either.

TP lives to mess up an informative thread.
Don't mind him.
I'm sure it's not easy for him to realize that other schools are improving their coaching situation and his school still has JW.
:(

Even Valley got a new coach!

I wouldn't spend that money just yet, if I were him.;)

Our day is coming!!! The rain will stop fallin soon. :redhot:

The only thing I realize is that you all are digging deep into your pockets to TRY to get to the level of the BIG THREE. Always remember that the more things change, the more they stay the same. That means ASU and AAMU will spend 80% of the time on the bottom.

TP,

Who are the Big Three and howmany time have you seen them at the SCG. I know of GSU, but who are the others and have they won a conference title in the 2000s? How about a Division Title? That's what I thought.

Keep trying to include yourself in a group that only you can say exists. Grambling people don't know who the big 3 are. Southern doesn't know either. But atleast they can say that they have won a championship in the last three years.

jsu can't say that for the last 5 or 6?

Once again, there is no such thing as A BIG 3. There is only one conference champ and right now that has been Grambling for the last 2 years and before that there was Southern. You haven't seen the SCG since the SCG was born. You are a has-been.

Mike,

What's up with you man? Why you want to be soooo disrespectful to TP and the JSU folk. They're posed to make a comeback...just wait til Billy Ocean cranks out another hit album and goes on tour. I believe they both were on top in '96!:lmao:

TSU, plays A&M @ Normal - this is going to be a great season. I am sure by the time TSU invades Normal, Jones, will be a nervous wreck. I need to call Ms. Cleo, for some insight on the final score and A&M final 2002 record.

I hope he get the needed from the administration.

DAHILL,

I am sure you will be cheering for TSU.

Yeah but JSU has beaten every team in the SWAC in the last three years and I guess it was nice of you to talk only about 2000. The BIG three are not defined by TWO years but on how we have stood the test of time. Any team can be good for a year or two (like Hampton, BCC) but when AAMU hits 20 years STRAIGHT without a losing season, holla at me. You may now start at ZERO!!!:lmao:

The last four teams to win the SWAC were GSU, SU, JSU, and Alcorn. Recall what I told you about teams with ceilings. Your alma mater is one of them. Don't set your hopes too high because if you THINK that AAMU can win more than one football title a DECADE, you are a lost son.

BTW, as sorry as our staff is, Hughes as a better record since he took over than 8 other coaches in the SWAC. Like it or not, we are in the best shape of any team in the SWAC to take the title this year so just sit back and watch your team and seven others get steamrolled. It's not about being back. It about being JSU and we are not inherent losers like a lot of teams in the SWAC.

Everybody at this school knows, that I always pull for TSU, UNLESS they play Alabama A&M. I will never support another school if they are playing AAMU. I am the only person on campus that has an AAMU tag on my Cadillac. If you ever drive through campus and see a Sedan Deville with a AAMU tag on it... THAT IS ME :)

Explain how this is possible. I mean I know there is a lot of room for improvement, but you just lost your two primary receivers, your defense gave up close to 40points a game, your quarterback threw so many interceptions that he went from being Superman Kent to Robert Testaverde, and on top of that you keep the same man at Coach who can't even win the Eastern Division. Not to mention that LC Cole has beaten yall 3 yrs in a row and the Hornets has kicked your azz 2 yrs running.

Remember that you lost to Tn State , Alabama State, GSU last year and you have to go on the road to play them this year. You also have to travel to Baton Rouge and Pine Bluff (who plays you tougher than they play anyone). Yall will have difficulty finishing above .500.

Mike Bigg,

I recall last year how everyone was predicting how good TxSo would be because they beat JSU ONE year and how good AAMU would be because they went to the SCG and how sad TNState would be because they were 3-8 and how JSU would lose to UAPB because we lost to them before. The law of averages over the last 20 years says that there is not enough talent to go around for 6 teams to be better than JSU. JSU has 8 automatic wins but i will not name them until we do our pre-season predictions. How do we win??

1. Our coaches know they have to. Sure it will be hard to fire a coach with a winning record but we have started to get things where we want them so that when Hughes contract really expires, we will be in a better position to make a move.

2. We return more starters than anyone other than Alcorn. When have we EVER missed receivers?? We already have Goss, Manning, Jacobs?, and Jones. Those guys are going to step up and then we are going to bring in Torrey Ross who will be not see much time but he will be productive. We will actually miss our TE more than TC and Story. We have an offensive system that works against you clowns.

3. The running game. Asberry wanted to ride Kent. Toward the end of the season, we saw a change in that philosophy. We are going to be much more diverse on offense this year. Counselor is going to be a major part of the offense. Also, don't forget all the o-linemen we recruited last year. They are about to hit the field. :eek2:

4. Defensively, we bring back our entire front who took the place of our starters. We lose a lot of our starters in the secondary and that is a blessing. We have La Mont Wollard and Kenyelle Morgan waiting. This is going to be sweeter than sweet. We also get a new DC but if he does not improve the D, he will do no worse than Kelly. We also complemented our slew of 0-linemen with a slew of d-linemen in last years recruiting class. We also have a linebacker who is going to wreck the SWAC.

5. If we get just a decent place kicker and punter, we could have a sorry defense and still win the SWAC.

6. Gram, AlaSU, AAMU, SU, and the rest of the teams that don't matter will suck. We just might win this one by default.

Gram and Ala State won't even beat Alcorn.

TP,

Dayum bruh you almost had me worried until I realized you were only joking! Man, that was a good one...

Here's one for you:

"Once upon a time there was a little fly in a barn. He noticed a big pile of cow isht and being a fly, he went down to eat to his hearts content. Well the little fly ate and ate and ate til he was just stuffed.

When he tried to fly away, he realized that he had eaten too much. He looked around and saw a pitchfork nearby. He decided to climb upon the handle of the pitchfork and leap from there to get airborne.

Sure enuff after painstakingly climbing up the handle, he leaped out into the air and SPLAT he crashed to the floor and died!

A lesson you should learn from this fly:

TP is a very good historian on championships and so forth. If history means anything, then every place Coop has been the new coach comes in and take the same ballplayers and win with them. Therefore, if the pattern continues we should do ok this season.

Coach Jones has met with the team and realized that AAMU does not have to start on the bottom. Coop reshirted a lot of players and I do mean a lot. Now if Jones can convience those five 6'7' linemen who were on campus this weekend to come to AAMU, we can add to the stock. It appears that Coop had reshirted a lot of outstanding players.

While Jones was the OC at SCSU, he did ok against SWAC teams. TP please note that Jones was the OC when Jackson lost to JSU.

BTW, TP, AAMU fired 3 Coaches with winning records. We are not fishing, we told you up front that Coaches will get fired if they do not win Homecoming and the Magic City Classic. Coaches are told this up front.
