A state audit of Alabama A&M University released today points up enough sloppy bookkeeping that a state examiner said it is unclear whether any money is actually missing.

The Alabama Department of Examiners of Public Accounts lists discrepancies in the university's financial records for 1996-2000. The audit also cites ongoing concerns not addressed since A&M's last state audit in 1998.

Examiner of Public Accounts Larry Williard would not call the audit good or bad, but did say there were "a lot of obvious errors."

Among the findings:

Deposits that couldn't be traced to A&M's bank statements.

A $1.26 million difference between a 2000 year-end bank statement and the university's financial statement.

Inaccurate listing and pricing of equipment purchased by the university.

Incorrect placement of athletic revenue into various university foundation accounts instead of general university accounts. There are fewer controls over spending from foundation accounts.

Haresh Khanna, former vice president of business and finance at A&M, said this morning he wanted to read the report before commenting. Rod Steakley, the university's attorney, could not be reached for comment this morning.

Williard said his job is simply to identify errors and State audit finds sloppy bookkeeping at university A&M Continued from page A1 leave it to the university to fix them. "There's a lot of ways these (errors) can happen," he said. "I don't judge why it happened, just what happened and leave it at that."

Williard said a big concern with the A&M books is the lack of detailed records. A general ledger gives categories, such as revenue and expenditures, as well as total amounts. But subsidiary records are where you can actually see how those dollars were spent, Williard said, and A&M doesn't have those details in many cases, according to the audit.

Williard said the department tries to conduct annual audits of public entities, so the four-year audit of A&M is unusual.

"A lot of timing things caused problems," he said.

A&M's next audit is scheduled for this summer, Williard said.

The Alabama Department of Examiners of Public Accounts audits the books, accounts and records of all entities receiving or disbursing public money. Most of its audit work is doing traditional financial and compliance audits, which focus on two areas: reliability and accuracy of financial statements and compliance with laws and regulations governing those statements.

Im sure if you looked in the Presidents wife's purse, you will find those misplaced unaccounted for funds.

But you guys dont understand....A&M hasnt done anything wrong. This the fault of The Times for reporting this debacle. The Times hates A&M and will do anything to bring them down.

The issue is really about the problem of proper accounting and controls at our HBCU's and colleges through out the country. It seems that a lot of university personnel feel so secure in their positions that they do not feel compelled to adhere to the rules or have a thorough knowledge of proper Fund Accounting procedures.

This problem also occurs at PWC's but that's not really my main concern. My concern is that we as HBCU's get our act together and not be as corrupt as others in all other areas of government
(local, state, and federal). I hope the presidents of our universities would listen to the recommendation of these audit agencies and implement procedures and controls that would eliminate these embarassing and criminal acts. Personally, if I was a university President, I would hire someone with a Fund Accounting background who was competent enough to make sure that were are in compliance with the rules.

I'm pissed and tired of this happening...these type of things is gonna be the death of our institutions (just what these folk want)

earlier in January some gangmembers broke into the school safe and stole some money and we havent been able to find it since........there was also a basketball game held on the same night!

See? It was Gang members... B. Reed had nothing to do with it. If the gang members had joined a fraternity, this never would have happened.

RIGHT ON!

No problem exist at AAMU. It is routine year after year as we approach Founders week we expect to make the News.

See if our univerisites were funded at the same level as our PWCs in Alabama, we would not have a problem. I am on a Solid Waste Board, the company that run the plant and others throughtout the world are 165 Billions in debt. Now if you think I am going to worry about 1.26 million, you are out of your minds.

You tell me why a PhD. at Alabama makes more than a PhD at AAMU.

As you can see the Auditor is confused. One man trying to do an audit. you can hire anyone you want the money will add up the same.

Another thing Foundations are necessary because there is not enough State money.

Folks have to supplement their salaries.

Is this the same school that drags your pathetic scrubs football players through the mud every year? If so, then I know that school did not have anything to do with that money scandal.

I believe that your president felt sorry for Cole after he spent his money on that weightroom and then Cole's administration took it from him. So your president reimbursed Cole for his hard work and labor and your president forgot to report it to the financial advisor.

You know that you all have so much money that you all dont know what to do with it. (ie. all those practice fields, buying Cooper's contract out, etc...)
