Alabama State, Grambling State lead All-SWAC football team

Birmingham, AL - As might be expected, the SWAC East and West Division champions, Alabama State and Grambling State respectively, dominated the player selections for the 2001 All-SWAC football team. The All-SWAC team is selected by a vote of the head coaches of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Both schools had eight players named to the first team, although Grambling State had a total of thirteen players named to both teams, Alabama State had no players named to the second team.
Along with Grambling State and Alabama State totals, Jackson State had seven players (two 1st team), Southern landed five players (one 1st team), Alcorn State had four selectees (three 1st team), Texas Southern had 2 selectees (1 first team) and Alabama A&M had three players (one 1st team) selected and Prairie View had one first team selection. Mississippi Valley and Arkansas-Pine Bluff had 3 second team selectees each.

Alabama State's quarterback Darnell Kennedy earned Offensive Player of the year and Prairie View A&M defensive back Bobby Perry was tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Year. Alcorn State quarterback Donald Carrie earned Newcomer of the Year honors and Grambling State kicker Brian Morgan was named Freshman of the Year.

The ALL-SWAC first team players and Players of the Year will be presented their awards on Friday, November 30, 2001 at the SWAC Championship Football Awards Luncheon in Birmingham, Alabama. The guest speaker at the luncheon will be Art Shell, former head coach of the Oakland Raiders. The luncheon will begin at 11:30 A.M.

]Way to go HORNETS ! ! ![/SIZE]

I like these choices,
I really do

especially the Offensive Player of the Year!!!!

Kudos to the SWAC for not just looking at total passing yards and looking at the total game instead!!!!

Why does Ellis Spears not make it over Hankton at WR?

I also think Santino Hall is better than Perry, but teams didn't figure out that they shouldn't throw to Perry's side of the field until too late. They're both great players, though.

I hope you switch BJ Tiger to QB next year because he's a beast of a WR!!!!

Congrats to Larry Bias also for making 1st team at RB, especially after the injuries he's had in his career. As much ink as the big play offense of the HORNETS get, this brother has avg. over 6 yards a carry and rushed for over 1200 yards this year!!

All of the players picked appear to be good athletes. Some will surley make it to the pros. But, my hat is off to Darnell Kennedy. In the lost to Tuskegee, he still had at least 357 total yards.

I can't imagine GSU's Kalvin Pearson not being first team All-SWAC Strong Safety. This dude will definitely play on Sunday and is probably the best strong safety in all of D1AA.

A monster on the safety blitz, good pass defender, and ranges from sideline to sideline. This was an OVERSIGHT!

This list has some glaring omissions!!!

I know 3 GSU DB's made the team...but how do you leave off Calvin Pearson?

Tanaka Counselor over Brad Hill at RB? Huh? He isn't even the teams starter, and besides Valley...what the hell did he do? I can live with Bias...........good choice.

Where is Ellis Spears...if you have a WR from TxSU, then I know Spears should have made this list. Yall better hope he doesn't come back..........

Elgin Andrews....man that dude was all over the field. SWAC player of the week several times....where is he?

Just my observations. Props to all who made the team.

The SWAC office is run by idiots. Elgin Andrews shoulda been a strong candidate for defensive player of the year, and he doesn't even make the squad??? Tarnaka Counselor first team??? On the team period??? We didn't use the guy, though he could be the best back in the conference. They chose Zack Grady over Elgin?? I bet Elgin won defensive POTW more than any other defensive player. S _ _.

Props to Kennedy. Kent threw way to many INTs to beat that dude.

And 3 JSU linemen made 2nd team. What a joke.

I can't speak to what other players on the other teams did. I'll just say congrats to the deserving players.

Now didn't Panther Fan tell ya'll this back in Aug.....

DEFENSE
Bobby Perry (Prairie View A&M) 6'3, 196, Sr., Miami, FL

He speaks the truth.....

Perry is a good player...I would have selected Taylor but I'm biased.

But the biggest injustice was the omission of Calvin Pearson (GSU) and Elgin Andrews (JSU). I thought the 4 best lb's in the league were Taylor (GSU), Duke(GSU), Chapman (SU) and (Elgin Andrews) with Taylor and Andrews being shoo in picks, flip a coin between the other two.

I can live with these selections, but

We have got to stop giving the Coach of the Year to the Championship team...and ya'll know I speak the truth!!!!

Personally, it would be a helluva toss up between Dorsey (PVAMU) and Pete. These two guys have done an excellent job this year. It's just a shame that they won't get their just rewards from the conference.

jag diehard,

I agree that the coach of the year award should not automatically go to whoever wins the championship.

BTW, Dr. Thomas took Alcorn from 0-11 to 6-5 in one year. Throw his name in there too.

My bad...

You are absolutely right about Dr.Thomas considering this time last year he was in the same predicament as Coaches Hughes, Hardiman, etc., are this year. Haven't seen Alcorn at all this year, but from 0-11 to 6-5 does merit some recognition.

What!!!!! Lenny Williams of Southern and Calvin Pearson are not first team? Somebody has lost their mind.

If you vote for me to be the next SWAC Commisioner, I will develop a computer program to select the best players.

To win GR over l would not count tackers 10 yards down the field.
There nothing worst than a Defensive player making a hit after a RB has gained 35 yards and the guy who made the stop celebrate.

The All-SWAC Teams are selected by head cocahes only in the SWAC.......

This is the only conference in America that lets only the head coaches vote.......You figure it out....
