Alcorn State hosting the SCG is proving my point

Somewhat true...but we're not talking about a 100k stadium with all of the amenities. A good 30k stadium with decent parking will do for most HBCUs. A stadium like Veterans Memorial in Jackson sounds nice, but the reality is only JSU/SU and JSU/Alcorn actually fill it. I haven't been able to visit either of them yet, but the new Alabama State and Prairie View stadiums look pretty good and serve our purposes well.
Just depends on if they want to or have the support to invest $70M+.

Keep it like it is! Everybody has to get better and the incentive$ to get the game on campus is more than enough motivation.

I enjoyed seeing an actually Charged up atmosphere instead of the cavernous look in a too big venue.

I understand the business aspect but Espn had to love the way that game...Our Product was presented on National TV. I think if Alcorn has it again it will be more folks there next year.

I live in Houston and attended every SCG held in Houston. The 2015 game with JSU vs SU and 2016 SU vs Alcorn were great games and good atmosphere. However, Saturday's game in Lorman was fantastic! The weather was great and to the SU and Alcorn fans that is how you support your teams.
I'm a diehard Texas Southern supporter and season ticket holder that have followed TSU football since 1997. Unfortunately, I've only witnessed our fanbase get excited twice and that was 1999 or 2000 and 2010. I know that we are just waiting for a winning team.
I can say that I have NEVER gone to a football game and had to go in the stadium at least 1.5 hours before kickoff to get a seat. It was fun being an Alcornite for a day and even wore a purple shirt.
I always attend the Celebration Bowl to support HBCU football.
Go Braves!

And to be honest I have been to Alcorn vs southern games at Alcorn that were even more packed. I remember in 2004 when the game was at Alcorn. Two people got to fighting over seats.

EXACTLY, My Friend! This kind of continuous support is so needed. I believe that sheer pride in all HBCUs is the only antidote that helps us to heal when the school we attended doesn't prevail to a championship level. I have mentored and financially supported so many students at different HBCUs (Hampton, Howard, Morehouse, NC A&T, Alcorn, Jackson State, to name a few). When one of us succeed, we all succeed! So, Thank You for investing in these games. Blessing will surely come back to you.

I fully agree. This was an experiment into the format change, which probably has been discussed behind closed doors for a minute.

Watching it live, the energy just oozed from the TV from both teams and fanbases. The carrot of hosting the SCG just adds more to the conference race and road to the Celebration Bowl.

I'm sure there are some hiccups with this year, but let's keep it.

I think the SWAC team with the best record should host the championship game as long as the stadium holds at least 20,000. If that school has a stadium with less than that, they can move the game to another location or let the team with the second best record host the game.

If you are a member of the SWAC and eligible, you should host it. No stipulations.

I'm sure that most like to point to Valley's stadium as far as size but that stipulation would also eliminate PV (15,000), UAPB (16,000) and Grambling (19,500) and I'm sure they ain't going for that.

Nope... shouldn't matter. If Valley wins and has the best record they should be able to host.

They could also have the option to bring in temporary seating to make up the difference. The SWAC office should force the host school to make as big a profit as they can.

I can assure you that ESPN didn't give 2 cents about how the product "was presented." That's is the only thing that "WE" care about. All ESPN cared about is how many people watched this game on TV.
I recall a post by someone in the past indicating that revenue is made by viewership and not how many folks attend. From my perspective it's a win-win situation. For the casual fan that happened to tune into the game saw a competitive game and probably watched longer. Potential student athletes, college bound students, and football fans could have had their interest peaked to explore the schools or future games.

Do we know if they will release viewership numbers?

The ratings were slightly down (1.59) last year but still outdrew all the other bowl games (5) that day except the Las Vegas Bowl (2.32) as well as the D2 National Title game

ESPN makes their money off how many people watch so they really honestly don't care about attendance. It's the people on the ground (100 Black Men of Atlanta, etc.) as well as SWAC fans that care about attendance and how it looks on TV.

The Bahamas Bowl might have had 5,000 people there (if that lol) but it had ratings increases each year (until last year which it had a significant drop) so that's why it is still on TV. With the bowl game dead period gone now and a few more schools possibly eyeing FBS down the road, it would not surprise me to see 1-2 pop up (including another HBCU bowl game or FCS bowl)

Would a SWAC/MEAC runner-ups Bowl Game be well received? I believe the respective fan-bases would support and viewership would be commensurate with the Celebration Bowl. Sponsorship could be difficult.

Thanks for the post. Any ratings for the 2018 SWAC football championship game?

It would depend on the match ups and location. This year would be Southern versus BCU (2nd place MEAC team). Southern would travel but I don't know about Bethune

I do like that the Celebration Bowl kicks off the bowl season and actually has people watch HBCU football that normally wouldn't do so
