At least seven of the players are already enrolled, including former Alabama State players Brandon Roberts, Jimmy Daniels, Andrew Pitts and Artis Sullivan; receiver Giles Chapman of Washington High (Fremont, Calif.); long snapper Marquis Lovett of Georgia Military; and cornerback Derek Owens, a transfer from the University of Georgia.

The Hornets currently have eight commitments and those include former Central-Phenix City quarterback Darren Daniel, a transfer from Stanford; Carver defensive tackle Roderick Henderson; St. Jude linebacker Antonio Justice; Stanhope Elmore offensive lineman Darian Love; Dothan High cornerback Nick Martin; and Georgia Military tailback Jarrett Neely.

Pre signing day: The five biggest winners and losers to date


THE WINNERS:

1. Norfolk State – The Spartans are taking full advantage of their first MEAC football title. Singing all world defensive end Lynden Trail a transfer from the Florida Gators and high school offensive lineman standout Mike Phillips is only the tip of the iceberg. I know the Legion is thinking rePETE, but I take the wait and see approach.

2. Alabama State – The Hornets have used facility upgrades and word of mouth to bolster this year’s class. The headliner thus far is Darren Daniel a quarterback and Stanford transfer but the most critical get was in the return of all everything linebacker Brandon Roberts. He was dismissed from Alabama State due to a physical altercation after the zero tolerance kicked in last year. He spent a year at Florida A&M keeping himself eligible and now he’s back. Here’s an early season prediction. The 2012 Magic City Classic will be the championship game for the SWAC. Grambling fans don’t be upset. You should get dropped by both schools again in 2012.

3. Florida A&M – All last year the Rattler screamed and hollered that Joe T was done on the highest hills. Well his response is reloading the Rattlers for the 2012 campaign. I’m going on record now. The Rattlers have the easiest conference path to the MEAC title. All they have to do is win against six teams they should be favored against. Apparently, the orange and green intend on striking through the air with wide receivers Neal Cunningham and Lakeif Daniels. However, the snakes are adding the linemen on both sides to strengthen the team due to the potential loss of the 100. It’s going to be a long season in Tallahassee for one reason or another.

4. Tennessee State – Thanks Coach Reed, it appears that you are gathering another fine class with JUCO transfer Demetrius Rhaney leading the way for Trabis Ward and company. Keep progressing and keep winning…..

5. Southern – I’m stumped, what Coach Mitchell is selling to players to get them to commit this early. I have no clue what it is, but Southern is planning something big for the SWAC West and I can’t wait to see the coming out party. On the other hand, I’ve noticed something. The Jaguars have changed their recruiting focus. The coaching staff has evidently decided to go east and focus on the major recruiting centers and keep the fire at home burning (Atlanta, Florida, and Louisiana). This going to be interesting the big dog now is David Chin a monster running back form the bottom. He probably will be the lead back in a run focused offense.

Who to look out for: Texas Southern – Coach Ashberry has come in without fear and has already begun to make noise. The Tiger fans may expect a boost in the ranking from 2011 plus much more.

Our class will be small - less than10 - on signing day mainly because of apr. But Comegy does hi best work between march and July, picking up impact players like Joseph Lebeau and Casey therriualt months after signing day. so I suspect we'll be holding a few scholarships back.

They've got new facilities and they're building back up," the Stanhope Elmore High offensive lineman said. "My grandfather goes to all the Alabama State stuff because he went there. I always went to the football games.

"I think they're going to win championships because they're building up and they had a pretty good season this year. I think they're building up to something good."

Reggie Barlow would agree. As the Alabama State football coach wraps up his final recruiting weekend today, he is trying to put the finishing touches on what may be the best recruiting class in the history of the program.

No smack, really...but some have commented that Comegy is a good recruiter. I honestly don't see it, especially in terms of bringing in an lots of high school talent. I don't pretend to know JSU's roster, but has he ever had (and I'm sure there's got to be some) a TOP player that was signed from High school?

no most have kept quiet because its an NCAA violation to speak on recruits..... These ASU players are already in school..... any commits were reported by local newpaper or newstations.

Yes. Most of our better defensive players came from the HS ranks. A few our top offensive players as well, including our WRs and top RBs. QB and oline is where we tend to go for the quicker fix. Comegy as you know likes transfers so we tend to go that route more than other schools. And with the current scholarship limitations he's pushing even more in that direction.

As for whether or not he's a good recruiter, he is. on this level it's about finding players wherever you can. Schools compete for the transfers we get. That's part of recruiting.

Clearly, you don't know anything about JSUs roster so at least you were honest when you said it. :lol:

Comegy is the best recruiter in the SWAC. Now that Doug back, that should change. The name of Doug Williams and Grambling can't be beat.

That's a valid point... especially in terms of getting juco help in the trenches. He definitely has his network for getting players that come in and contribute. Therriault was a helluva "find" for yall.

I really don't... no diss, but I follow yall moreso once the game approaches than checking to see what yall have signed. Perhaps because (despite the proximity) we don't appear to recruit from the same pool.

No, we don't. I wish we would recruit the N.O. area much more. North LA pumps out some good players, as well. Comegy's connections are in AL, GA and a few JUCO's up north, so that's where he tends to put all of his recruiting efforts.
 
Bama State tends to put together some consistently good classes. They just have a lot of defections along the way. Usually academics. No surprise here. But when it comes to matching up with talent, I have no worries with Comegy at the helm. He can get the players. Just wish he could do a better job on the sidelines and better job of developing and utilizing his talent.

Well, it's not just you but everyone thinks JSU only recruits transfers. Comegy did it his first year when he felt he had to...and he will always bring in some guys for immediate help but we have quite a few top performers who were recruited from High School.. Marcelos Wilder, Rico Richardson, and Donovan Robinson to name a few.

well i know bama state got of 2 commits bama state got out of the weekend. melvin davis from edna carr, db committed and 6'5 320 dt also committed. davis had at least 7 offers fbs and fcs.
