Alabama St. sees new $50M stadium as first step to FBS status

Alabama State University is building a new football stadium on campus, a key piece of the school’s long-range plan to become the first historically black college to compete at the Football Bowl Subdivision level.

Athletic department officials view the $50 million project opening next fall in Montgomery as the school’s “front porchâ€￾ and the first step toward advancing to college football’s highest level.

“One of the ways to do that is to provide state-of-the-art facilities,â€￾said Stacy Danley, Alabama State’s athletic director and a former Auburn running back.

i thought FAMU was the first HBCU to experience FBS.

if ASU is next, then go for it. anyways, it's stated this in a long-range plan, so anything could happen between now and then in the FCS and HBCU world.

This is great news for the SWAC. It is time for a HBCU to make this move. Famu came so very close but poor planning and money scandals hurt FAMU. Tennesse State was the second HBCU who was not very far away from making this happen, but they got cold feet. It has been fun for me to watch the way South Alabama's program put the plan together to move to the FBS ranks. The support from the students and city is just crazy! I hope ASU can pull this off. The gold should be to play in the Sun Belt conferance.

FAMU was the first HBCU to be granted FBS status but they were shut out of the door after violations during their final NCAA division I review. They have never played one game as a FBS school.

It's not up to Bama. It's up to ASU. South Alabama was granted FBS status after only two years of football and now are members of the Sun Belt. North Alabama has plans to move to the Sun Belt by 2017. The only power Alabama and Auburn have over anyone is the abilty to keep UAB from being a Bama powerhouse program.

When you have an Athletic Director with a Vision this can happen......I hate that Alabama State will be the school to push JSU to move ahead but if thats what it takes then so be it....I hope they are serious about this and move forward....I hate our AD at JSU she SUCKS.......

All that growth supports Danley’s belief that an FBS conference will extend a “bona fide” offer to Alabama State, an NCAA requirement.

That's the key right there. They've got to get an invitation. The Sunbelt is probably out at this time, but the WAC is on life support and looking for teams. There has been a lot of talk that they could add 6 or 8 east of the mississippi fcs teams. Right now, that is the play.

Money scandals nor NCAA violations were the reason FAMU did not complete the transition period.

When HBCUs get a clue, you will see 7-8 move up together. Likely candidates: Hampton,SCSU, A&T, FAMU, ASU, JSU, SU and GSU.

as stated, this is a conclusion of a long range plan. i'm assuming that's 8-10 years. need time to build plan, research the environment, grow alumni, strongly increase funding and support. anyways, a lot of dynamics of FBS and FCS would of changed by that time. look back 8-10 years.

Which is why a long range goal is stupid. They need to be in touch with a conference NOW asking what they need to do to get membership. 2-3 years is all you need to make a move. Staying in 1-AA 8 more years won't do any more than it has done for them the past 8 years! NOTHING! We have already lost enough time in the 1-AA time warp. The move is the important part. Everything else falls into place after that but they need to have a confernece home like GaState, etc.. did.

7 FCS schools have or planning to make the jump by 2014....Our administration are the ones holding us back....

I hope they have more than $110k if they want to move up.
Im not sure if the NCAA still requires minimum attendance requirement...if they do, ASU wont be going anywhere anytime soon.
Good luck with that...

If HBCU's want to go to the FBS before that big move, they should first move to a regional FCS conference to get their feet wet then try the FBS move. Got to be smart on how you approach that big of a move. For example. Alabama State may need to try out the Southern Conference first. Got to crawl before you walk. Good to see a vision is there though, but we have to be realistic and smart also. People love seeing HBCU's fail so you have to do it right.
