Former Arkansas QB becomes catalystfor Hornets' offense

Tarvaris Jackson's decision to leave the University of Arkansas three years ago and transfer to Alabama State has worked out beautifully for him and the Hornets.

All Jackson has done is become arguably the best quarterback in the Southwestern Athletic Conference while leading ASU to a runner-up finish two years ago and to the league championship last season. He was offensive MVP in the championship game last year.

"I was hoping for this, but I never imagined it would be this good," said Jackson, who is 24-8 as ASU's starting quarterback. "I never regretted my decision. I've been enjoying it ever since."

A 6-foot-2, 225-pound senior, Jackson will try to add another win to his impressive resume when ASU (6-1, 6-0) takes on Alabama A&M (5-2, 3-2) Saturday afternoon in the 64th annual Magic City Classic at Birmingham's Legion Field. Kickoff is at 2:30 and the game can be seen on ESPNU.

With Matt Jones entrenched as Arkansas' starting quarterback, Jackson knew he wouldn't get to play. As a result, the former Sidney Lanier star opted to go back to Montgomery and play for the Hornets.

"Arkansas wasn't the place for me," said Jackson, who has thrown for almost 7,000 yards and 55 touchdowns in his career. "They had Matt Jones and he was a great quarterback. They were going with him and I thought it was time for me to leave."

Defensive end Kerry Frazier also doesn't see the Hornets having much of a problem putting the Magic City Classic behind them.

"We've got a lot of motivation. They're a tough bunch," he said of Grambling. "We know that much already. They blew out A&M, by what, 44-0? Wow. That's tough. Yeah, we'll be ready. We'll have to be."

Not impressed: Despite the loss, Williams wasn't impressed with what he saw from Alabama A&M's defense.

"This wasn't really a great defense that we faced today," he said. "They were good, but the first week (against South Carolina State), that was the best defense we've faced."

For the game, Williams picked up 32 yards on 10 carries and also had 24 receiving yards and a touchdown.

L.C. Cole never planned on this.

Back in 2000, when Cole first put together the Alabama State football luncheons on each Monday following a game, the idea was to give loyal fans an opportunity to come in and ask the football coaches a few questions about the prior game, get a little insight into what went wrong and what went right and generally get to know the coaching staff.

What he didn't have in mind was an hour-long interrogation with only the bright lights and rubber hoses missing.

But that's what Monday's luncheon turned into, as head coach Charlie Coe and his staff were grilled by one of the largest crowds to attend the luncheon.

"I understand their frustrations," Coe said. "But trust me, no one out here is any more frustrated or upset than this coaching staff is. We feel the pain worse than anyone."

That pain, for both the coaches and the fans, comes from Saturday's 31-28 loss to rival Alabama A&M in the Magic City Classic.

Was it the coaching when they were winning too? People kill me with that excuse. How about the players didn't execute. I'm sure they planned no differently. Coaches don't pass, tackle, block, or cover........

IT HAS BEEN COACHING ALL ALONG! THIS SQUAD HAS BEEN WINNING WITH SUPERIOR TALENT LEFT OVER BY THE PREVIOUS COACH. ALSO THIS TEAM HAS BEEN MAKING THE SAME MISTAKES ALL YEAR. THE SPECIAL TEAMS SUCK, BUT THE SPECIAL TEAMS CAN INCLUDE ANY OF THE TALENTED ATHLETES ON THE TEAM. I DON'T THINK IT IS THE PLAYERS; ITS THE COACHES NOT DEMANDING THAT THE PLAYERS KNOW THEIR ASSIGNMENTS OR SIT ON THE BENCH. IF ATHLETES ARE EXCELLING AT OTHER PHASES OF THE GAME THERE IS NO EXCUSE WHY THEY SHOULD NOT AT LEAST PLAY DECENT SPECIAL TEAMS. SPECIAL TEAMS COST ASU IN BOTH GAMES THEY LOST AND IN OTHER GAMES THEY WON THEY HAVE GIVEN UP BIG YARDAGE ON SPECIAL TEAMS. I AM SORRY BUT THAT IS COACHING, SAME MISTAKES ALL YEAR.

NEXT TIME DO SOME RESEARCH BEFORE JUST RUNNING YOUR MOUTH PARTNER! PEOPLE CLOSE TO THE HORNET PROGRAM UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM SAYING.

The sad part about your lie is that we didn't blitz you that much. If you noticed after the Grambling game we abandoned that blitz package. Also Jones is running a balanced offense. That's how we beat you. We run and pass. Look at the stats for all our games. Every team we play is so stuck on how Gram beat us that they think we will play them the same way. :lol:
 
These last two articles were very interesting. A couple of quick comments:

1) AAMU has a very good defense when they "come to play."
2) Josh Moon has slept on Valley. That game will not be a cake walk for Bama State.
3) AAMU will also have a tough fight with Alcorn
4) I agree that Bama State has real good talent and has been winning in spite of coaching. Hate to say it but if you gave Dean Pete that same squad, ASU would never lose. :lol:
5) I will be very suprised if Bama State pulls off the win this weekend. I don't think they will be able to outscore Grambling and their already suspect defense is not 100%. On the other side of the ledger, Grambling will face the best offense they have met since Washington State. The Bama State offense will score their fair share of points.
6) The eastern race will go down to the wire/bitter end.
