Alabama A&M's AD gets critical report

Honestly the part about Stallworth being a compitant AD is legit... He was listed in a Black Enterprise magzine as one of the top Black businessmen in the country. Do you realize how large his contracting company is? He built it from scratch.

Mr. John Stallworth provides overall leadership, directs strategic planning, and establishes goals and objectives for Madison Research Corporation (MRC). An insightful and astute businessman, he started MRC in 1986, prior to his 1988 retirement from professional football.

Mr. Stallworth's leadership abilities and business savvy have guided MRC's steady growth - the company now has over 650 employees, $69.5M FY03 revenues, and operations in seven locations: Huntsville, AL (headquarters); Warner Robins, GA; Orlando, FL; Shalimar, FL; Montgomery, AL; Houston, TX; and Dayton, OH.

Mr. Stallworth's contributions translate from the business environment to active involvement in the community. He has been featured in numerous local and national articles and programs heralding his work in business, collegiate and professional sports, and community affairs.

Mr. Stallworth earned an MBA with a concentration in Finance and a BS degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Management, both earned at Alabama A&M University, Normal, AL.

Mr. SWAC, I mentioned attending the Chamber of Commerce meeting on Tuesday. As you know Redstone Arsenal is on the Base Closure List. Politically this divide of a black and white issue mentioned in the article could have an impact on all the work that these folks are doing to get Huntsville of this list. Unfounded statements could start a spark that Huntsville may have to explain. The video about Huntsville is a very positive. It was also mentioned that Huntsville will strentghten it colleges and universities to ensure that people are trained for the professioal jobs in this Hi-Tech community. How much of this Will go to AAMU?

Suppose Mr. McCarter article was directed toward businesses to help AAMU built an arena so that it could attract the best students in America, this would be a plus, but I don't think he has the ability to think at this level. It is all how we see things.

Mr. SWAC said:
All of us Dawgpound members on here have said time and time again what we need. (new track, arena, coaches, etc.) These are problems we know of, but like Mike alluded to money has to come from somewhere. And athletics is not the only thing on the campus that needs to be attended to. Academics most be taken care of along with athletics hand in hand. This article is written in the underline tone of what AAMU must do, AND DOING WHAT THE WHITE POPULUS of Huntsville demands us to do.

!

Besides, we all know full well that you can make all the gestures toward white folks you want to make. Fact remains, that STILL will not bring them out in masses to Normal's Hill for football and basketball games, or anything else for the simple reason that many of them will continue to choose to believe the lies and negative stereotypes about our University....and black folks in general.

DAHILL, you know I know all about John Stallworths' accomplishments on and off the field. My question is what makes John Stallworth more qualified for the position of AD at AAMU than Jim Martin? What experience, if any, does he have in sports administration? What other AD, SID, HC, or asst. HC positions has he held? More importantly, why would John Stallworth take a HUGE STEP DOWN to become AAMU AD. The thought is almost insulting. The man owns his own multi-million dollar technology company. He makes more money in one year at MRC than he would make in 10 years being AAMU AD. John Stallworth is just ANOTHER successful black man, BUT John Stallworth hasn't ruffled any feathers in Huntsville. These white people are looking for a "token negro" (and no I'm not calling Stallworth a token negro), but he gets along fine with white folks in Huntsville, and he came from AAMU.

Alum, Last year my brother invited one of his white friends to join him at an A&M football game. They were good friends. They were co-workers, hung out together, went fishing together, was in his wedding, got drunk together, and all that. They even played on the company softball team. But he kept dodging invitations to go to the AAMU games. Now I could understand a little (he didn't want to be the only white face at the game), but that is not the truth at all. There are some white people who come out to games, but that's some. How is this situation AAMUs fault for not reaching out to the white community, or further fueling the divide? Perhaps my brothers friend got a small taste of what it may be like for black people who are surely in the minority of the crowd. I mean what are we to do, stay out of the sun and bleach our skin to make whites FINALLY feel welcome?

First of all, I am not comparing him to AD Martin... I just simply responded to what you said downplaying what Stallworth could do as AD at AAMU... AD Martin has done a good job IMO so far...

John Stallworth is one of the most popular people (reguardless of color) in this city. Anyone that is a good business man would make a good AD or president. WHY???? Because they can easily get many large cooperations to give to the athletic department. I believe that just because of his name, alot of these Fortune 500 companys in the city would give to the AAMU athletic department.

I never said he couldn't do the job. I asked what qualifications does he have in sports administration? Ok, he would be better raising money than Martin (which Martin has done a good job of doing), but what about running an ENTIRE ATHLETIC PROGRAM? There are NCAA guidelinesto follow, and numerous amounts of alumni ASS to kiss to be an effective AD. John Stallworth ain't kissing nobodies ass. Name recognition can only take you so far. Your name can't do your job for you though.

BESIDES, John Stallworth has declined the position many times in the past, but he is still obviously the popular choice among whites in Huntsville.

I didn't downplay him in where you quoted me. I down-played him here:

I will not dispute John Stallworth's ability to start a Contract Engineering Firm BUT........... there is a "L" of a lot of difference in starting a firm and working in the confines and restrictions of academia. Granted, name recognition will only take you so far. That bullsnit that M.McCarter printed is no more than the political bullsnit that was used to get President Gibson out of office. I do know for a fact that the last auction that was held to help raise money for AAMU Athletics, Stallworth neither supported nor would he return phone calls from us who ask to bring a Football by to get signed so that we could auction it off????????
"L", Doug Williams sent us an autgraphed fooball to auction off every year he was coaching at GRAM and we responded with our Coaches at his golf tournament.

There is a clinedestined group whose objective is to gain control at AAMU and put their cronies in certain positions of control. M.McCarter (your basic jughead lard-azzed white boy) has never said or written anything positive about AAMU Academics or Athletics. Mark knows who I am and what my connection is with AAMU and AAMU Athletics. My wife and I were out having dinner over the holidays he was close enough to touch me or I touch him, that sumbeech never parted his lips but he stared at me and my wife the whole time????? I did'nt expect him to acknowledge my presence 'cause he barely says anything in the Pressbox or in the gym. I confronted his azz about three (3) years ago on some negative schitt he had written about Tiger Woods that had racial overtones.

I truly caution anyone reading anything in any Newspaper regarding ANY HBCU, ANY BLACK owned or BLACK run Business, or any other situation involving BLACK People. The writer, 99 times out of 100 will always be white and their interest is first and foremost is the white-side

Wow..........This is an intense thread (very interesting though).

Indeed it is...

Question to MD and other AAMU folk in the know...

I thought ADs were evaluated by the NCAA...what does the NCAA and AAMU's adminstration hafta say about the current AD's performance...

the writer is right in some aspects....some areas are neglected..and that's because of personal choice....

look at your SID for example.....he's a 1-man show but you all have one of the larger budgets in the SWAC...

Normally the AD works directly for the President of the University. If there are violations in the Department of Athletics and are ignored by the AD then the NCAA has a right to notify the President. It is the ADs job to ensure the University is not cited for lack of Institutional Control which is the term used by the NCAA when a school is placed on probation.

On the academic side of the house there is a belief that too much money is spent on athletics. Therefore, if the program cannot support itself money will have to come from other sources. If the AD cannot bring in addition revenue in this day and time, he or she will not be in that job long. Job performance is not a problem, I believe the new appointed Trustee who got rid of Dr. Gibson are going to continue to listen to those who helped to get them on the board.

some one mentioned budgets ... but the question is this ... where is the majority of the money in the athletic department's budget going ... certainly support areas like sports information, sports medicine, game operations, etc. do not get enough money in the SWAC.

and another question ... everyone is speaking about stallworth becoming AD ... is there anyone else within the department who is qualified for the spot?

HUH?
leem go back to the top. GR musta missed a crucial sentence.
Nope...still doesnt make sense.
Must gotta go ready post above....
Nope...didnt help

Seems like that guy has been saying some of the same stuff GR has been saying for years now. Maybe since someone white has said it you guys will give more credibility to it.

Can someone tell me what about that article was incorrect factually?

GR thinks the guy is saying that you are not reaching your portential. Not only are you not reaching your potential, you are not TRYING to reach your potetial. Now GR has another way of stating it. When GR says it, he says you guys are SMALLTIME. Not only are you SMALLTIME you think SMALLTIME. Thats why you have such poor facilities.

There is no reason for a D1 program not to even have a damn track or for your basketball faclilities to be falling to the ground the way it is. When you know better you do better. Apparently you dont know any better. Thats all the guy is saying. You just need some forward thinking leaders there.

Someone said Martin (AD?) was doing a good job. The GR is not that familiar with AAMU athletics, but what has he done? What has he built? What is his plan to build something. Arent you guys a step away from NCAA probation because of some rules violations? If thats what you call doing a good job then that goes right back to the word GR so eloquently used for the past 5 years.....SMALLTIME thinking. You must pull yourself away from that.

The GR, must realize that we TooT our own horn, I am not going indept on this but you and I agree on many things. Here is a new one for your to ponder. Realizing that we had two D2 programs in Huntsville, the SWAC provided us with an opportunity to move ahead of the other D2 Program. This is why I keep telling you all that the SWAC is an outstanding conference, just because ol charlie say we are bad we don't buy into it, we take the positive approach because we have vision.
