A&M picked to win close Eastern race over JSU

BIRMINGHAM - Alabama A&M and Arkansas-Pine Bluff have been picked by Southwestern Athletic Conference football coaches and sports information directors to return to the league's championship game this season.

The Bulldogs, who downed the Golden Lions 22-13 in the 2006 SWAC Championship Game, edged Jackson State for the favorite's role in the Eastern Division in voting announced Tuesday during the league's annual media day.

....as far as "this" season, you caint be serious? I thought you know football. But you smacking right? Keep on absorbing some of that foolishness that you be hearing on this board. LOL

Now if you talkin bout 08 or 09, we might run into some issues of beefing back up, and not making it back to the SCG; and it wouldn be nuthin for me to say really.

Why would you take this as smack? Did you guys not have a signing class of 5? From the article linked to this tread, your coach stated you lost 9 starters. How is this "foolishness"?

They don't like you to tell the truth sometimes....unless it is good truth.

Carry on....

.....I take it as smack because you would have to be a fool to think that we dont have any depth. I mean, how soon do we forget about the 06 class, 05, etc.; they were large classes ya know. We lost six starters on offense and three on defense, something like that ~shrugs~ Do you honestly believe that we are that low in quality players that will step up AND have more bodies to back them up? I mean come on bruh? Now like I said, those 5 recruits could possibly hurt us next year or the year after that; but this year it wont. Besides the majority of recruits are red shirted anyway; at least thats how it is in Huntsville.

This is TRULY not intended as smack. However, the general concensus is that AAMU was not a good football team last year. Given that, I think that a lot of people are of skeptical that you had players any better on the bench. If these players are only as good as the ones they are replacing, that is not a good sign because then we should only expect a team as good as the one you had last year.

This is the same thing that you and a few others (not consensus) said last year, and the year before, and the year before, and so on and we keep proving you all wrong. So if you and a few others think we will not be good this year...so be it............

Ya'll some touchie people in Normal. :goof:
A TSU poster just retyped what was in the article and ya'll go off the deep end.:goof:

.....see here we go.

I bet if it was the "general consensus" team, it'll be a different story.

LOL

Perhaps, this should enlighten some:

"But we know we have a lot to replace, and it's going to require a tremendous amount of work for us to compete at the level (where) we're used to competing."

In other words, there's a good possibility that yall (A&M) will struggle A LOT next season! :shame:

I'm a fool now. But at the end of the season make sure you apologive for your statement. Might not make sense to you now, but will later. To help you out, do some research on the 1999 TSU team. You'll see QB Leon Murray was not the only starter hurt.

With national signing day less than two weeks away, the Bulldogs have had to scramble to get potential recruits to visit. Approximately 12 players will visit this weekend and 18 are expected to be on campus next weekend. Out of that number, the Bulldogs plan to sign 12-15 players. National signing day is Feb. 7.

Jones Announces 2007 Football Recruiting Class
Spring Game set for March 16

Anthony Jones

Feb. 7, 2007

Alabama A&M head football coach Anthony Jones announced today that five future student-athletes have signed an NCAA National Letter of Intent to play football at Alabama A&M University. While the number of signees might seem low, Jones says many of the Bulldogs' team needs were addressed with these newcomers.

"We knew this was going to be a small class just based on the number of returning players we have from our 2006 SWAC championship team. We did lose a couple recruits at the last minute, but I am extremely happy with the quality of student-athlete we are bringing in with these signees."

Jones added that the 2007 squad will continue to develop throughout spring drills, which begin Friday, February 23. Last year Jones and his staff signed the largest recruiting class during his tenure with 30 players.

The 2006 Spring Game is slated for Friday, March 16. The time for that game has not yet been set.

"As a coaching staff, we set out to address our needs both on the offensive and defensive lines. We signed as many young men as we could right now with the resources that are available."

Here is a glance at the 2007 Alabama A&M Football recruiting class.

SYLVESTER DUPREE - OL, 6-5, 320 ? Birmingham, AL (Jackson-Olin High School) Chose Alabama A&M over Grambling ... Three-year starter ... All-county selection.
SAMUEL GREEN - OL, 6-1, 305 ? Fairfield, AL (Fairfield High School) Chose Alabama A&M over Jacksonville State ... Birmingham News all-metro team honorable mention ... Led Fairfield to a 10-2 record and state playoff berth as a senior.
JOEY HOWARD - DT, 6-1, 285 ? Lantana, FL (Santaluces High School) First-team all-county and all-conference ... Palm Beach County all-star game participant ... 71 total tackles, 10 tackles-for-loss, and 3 sacks as a senior ... Three-year starter.
QUENTINE THOMAS - FB, 6-1, 245 ? Troy, AL (Pike County High School) Chose Alabama A&M over Tuskegee and Fort Valley State ... Won back-to-back state 3A titles ... All-state as a linebacker with 100 tackles and 3 sacks as a senior ... Ran for 166 yards on 12 carries with 2 touchdowns.
DOMINIQUE WILLIAMS - OL, 6-3, 305 ? Huntsville, AL (Johnson High School) Chose Alabama A&M over Alabama State, Tuskegee, Miles, and Stillman ... One of the state's top offensive linemen ... Led Johnson to a 10-4 record and the Class 5A semifinals as a senior.

PsiSnake, they are right. We are hopeless.

There is no way we will replace RBs Nic Luke & Ta'Mar Scott, WRs Kevin Francis & Emmanuel Edwards, O-Linemen Chris Franklin, Jeffrey Johnson, and Kristian Smith, on offense. And replace DT Kevin Lockhart, LB Johnny Baldwin, and CB Marcus Black. There is NO WAY!. There is NO WAY! We didn't recruit anybody behind those players the LAST 3 YEARS. We never even took them out for a breather in the games AT ALL. Those three (3) O-Linemen we recruited will have to play as true freshmen. WE DIDN'T REDSHIRT ANY FRESMEN FROM LAST YEARS' TEAM. Just the same as we never replaced RBs Jeremiah Bonds, WR Keyon Hambrick, OL Charles Rodgers, K Rashad Cylar, DE Robert Mathis, DE Lieutenant Dukes, LB Jamal Ware, and all those other All-SWAC players we lost over the years. We still haven't recovered from losing them.

Nevermind the fact that we redshirted 26/28 recruits from last year, or all of the 24 we signed in 2005. They have only gotten weaker, slower, and haven't played a down of football since high school. Nevermind the fact that we had THREE (3) RS-Freshmen last year make All-SWAC, and the only reason they played last year was because one of the upperclassmen got hurt or left the team. Nevermind the fact that the rest of the RS-Frosh were causing hell on the practice team. Nevermind the FACT that we had SO MANY RBs and FBs we could only play the upperclassmen.

This season is just gonna be a wash. You heard it here first (well 2nd, Thanks TP).

And then we have an O-Line coach as our OC. Woe is us. WOE IS US!

A&M to use Pearl's wisdom as offensive coordinator

Line coach is beginning seventh season with Jones

With Stan Conner now preparing for his first season as head coach at Benedict College, Alabama A&M coach Anthony Jones needed a new offensive coordinator.

Jones didn't have to go very far to find one.

He had made offensive line coach Cedric Pearl interim offensive coordinator during the spring, and then he recently made it official by giving Pearl the full-time job.

"Coach Pearl has earned the opportunity to be offensive coordinator," Jones said. "He ran the show during the spring and did a good job.

"I oversaw a lot of it and made suggestions when I thought they were necessary, but Coach Pearl proved to be more than capable."

This will be Pearl's first job as offensive coordinator in more than a decade of coaching. This will be his seventh season under Jones.

Rest of train wreck... :(

You all are NOT answering the question. Honestly, unless you guys expect half the SWAC to be sorry, how do you expect a team like the one you had last year to win more than 5-7 games? No one is trying to pick on you or smack but AGAIN, most people feel that the team you had last year was simply not good...so most of us are just saying to you that you need to kick it up a notch to be competive in the near future. AGAIN, this is not smack and if you notice, this is not just TP saying this.

This is not really a question of if you can replace what you have last year but if you can put together a GOOD team since the one you had last year was just average (at best) compared to what the SWAC is used to...and I am not even talking about JSU, SU, and Gram champions. AlaState had a very respected championship team. AAMU did not. So maybe we are asking our question wrong or you are misunderstanding our concern.
