Letter from the Supreme Basileus

Dear Sorors, Partners, Family and Friends: You may have seen recent media coverage surrounding the tragic deaths of two young women who drowned near California State University ? Los Angeles on September 9 allegedly as the result of a pledging incident that got out of control. I hope you will join me in expressing our deepest sympathies to the families of the young women. Please know that our prayers and thoughts are with them during this very difficult time. While there has been public speculation that the incident involved Alpha Kappa Alpha, I want to remind you that we have no chapter of AKA at California State University ? Los Angeles. You may recall we suspended the local chapter more than two years ago over minor pledging infractions. If any individuals involved in the incident purported to represent AKA, they did so without the approval or knowledge of our organization. In fact, we are trying to determine whether the individuals involved have ever been members of AKA. We are fully cooperating with local authorities? investigation of this incident. While the details are still not clear, this is an appropriate time to review the strict anti-hazing policy we have in place, as well as our procedures to strictly enforce that policy. Our anti-hazing policy is available at www.aka1908.com. We have and will continue to enforce these procedures with all chapters.I also want to make you aware that the family of one victim has filed a lawsuit against AKA over the incident. Obviously we cannot comment on pending litigation, however, we are committed to protecting the good name of AKA and our legacy of sisterhood, service and scholarship. Be assured that AKA will continue to work toward fulfilling its commitment to service ? in our communities, across the nation and around the world. And please take a moment to reflect on this tragedy.

In the spirit of sisterhood,

Linda M. White
Supreme Basileus

Said all the things that were supposed to be said. Is it the truth? Who knows?

I see why she's Basileus. Awesome statement. Good word usage. Great clarity. Sincerity.
I'm praying with you all my sisters.

Just exactly what are you questioning?

The veracity of Soror Supreme Basileus White's statement can be established by doing research on our website.

Thank you JSTUS, we are devastated by the deaths of the two young women and these allegations and as you well know, the sisterhood between the four of us is forever. WE ALL KNOW.

Ok, so there is no undergraduate chapter at CSU-Los Angeles, but could the two women have been graduate students at the university and attempting to join a graduate/alumni AKA chapter located in L.A.? Their ages were 22 and 24. And was Kristin High a graduate of Texas Southern? If she were, then wouldn't she have been joining the grad chapter? Her being a student at CSU-LA would not matter in that case.

Houston, TX - Former Texas Southern volleyball player Kristin High, 22, drowned at a beach in Los Angeles, Calif., yesterday. High was a member of the Lady Tiger volleyball team in 1998-1999.

Apparently, she and another young woman were swimming at night with friends at Dockweiler State Beach. They were overcome by high tide and rough surf as High attempted to save the other woman. The incident is being investigated as an accidental drowning, but there is speculation of sorority hazing.

On the outside lookig in

Why is everyone so quick to say that these women were Killed???? I mean didn't the police say that they DID NOT find that hazing played a role in this? Once this was over if I was AKA I would file a counter suit for slander, something too let people know that you can't just go around accusing people of a crime :smh:

Well, none of us know what happened. All I was saying is that this part of the statement by the Supreme Basileus:

While there has been public speculation that the incident involved Alpha Kappa Alpha, I want to remind you that we have no chapter of AKA at California State University ? Los Angeles. You may recall we suspended the local chapter more than two years ago over minor pledging infractions.

might be totally irrelevant to the situation.

I mean didn't the police say that they DID NOT find that hazing played a role in this?

Actually, the police said:
the two deaths "appear(ed) to be accidental" and unrelated to the young women's efforts to join the sorority. Police are still investigating.

So they are not sure at this time.
