AJC Blog: Mo'Nique Show Cancelled

Oh well.......she had a run.

Not too much of a fan of hers, but I did watch the show a few times and it was okay. I hope I can catch the "Heartbeats" reunion episode. All I can say is that she did have an audience, and I'm sure she'll find another vehicle to work with.

I think her Academy Award will carry clout. Denzel Washington didn't start his career taking serious roles (i.e. Carbon Copy), neither did Will Smith or Jada Pinkett Smith, or Halle Berry, or Jamie Fox but their success came anyway. And as for Mo'Nique rolling "with the Denzels, Will Smiths and others who are true black powerhouse Hollywood folks", ironically it was a Tyler Perry movie she starred in that won her rightfully deserved Academy Award. She wasn't rolling with those so-called black powerhouse Hollywood folks, but won anyway. Like you said, "Hollywood is about WHO you know"....so apparently she knows who's who.

We can agree to disagree. Halle Berry has not done anything noteworthy after her Oscar and she has been Hollywood longer than Monique and she has the so-called Hollywood look. Halle's two biggest movies is being in James Bond and X-men were she was not the leading actress.

Denzel has major appeal......ie white women love him as well as black women do plus the white and black men look at him as real dude as well. He is a box office draw. As is Will Smith.....Jada is married to Will so her power comes from there. Denzel was on St. Elsewhere which was a good show on NBC doing the Hill Street Bues era. So don't sell him short. He also got his shine on in a Soldier's Story with Rollins. His early work was way better than Monique's. Hell he got his first Oscar in Glory. Another serious role. Denzel has been very careful on what work he has done. Now he has done some favors for friends like Robert Townsend who is an under rated director/producer with stuff like the Mighty Quinn. But that wasn't a type cast movie. Will started off greatly with the Six Degrees of Separation movie and of course had a hit sitcom with Fresh Prince. No struggle for him at all. Jamie Foxx is just super talented and again he has across the board appeal. The blacks and whites both like him. Same for them Wayans brothers. Some folks got it and some don't. Queen Latifah has cross over appeal......Monique does not and unless another black producer puts her own......I doubt the Spielberg's, Martin Scorcese's, Michael Bay's, Tom Hanks, Ron Howards, Jerry Bruckenheimer's of the world going to cast her in a leading role. It is tough on the sisters in Hollywood to get a lead role in a mainstream movie. Even Ice Cube got more clout in Hollywood than Monique. Those Oscars don't necessarily make you an instant sought after actor or actress depending on the role you won it for.

Well let's be honest, Mo is alright on the comedy circuit, but she ain't no prime Hollywood chick. America loves pretty dime pieces, not cutie pigs. Sorry it ain't gone happen, unless it is a big girl flick, then the cutie pigs will come out in force.

LOL @ Cee. I agree that Hollywood loves the dime pieces......still aint working for Halle though. But Queen Latifah is beating the big girl stereotype. But she has some class about herself though. She can still stay black and be from New Jersey without always having to be ghetto fab.... Hence her popularity with them other folks who really run Hollywood.

Precious was not a Tyler Perry film. Other folks had a hand in tha tmovie-he jumped on after others did all the work. He just helped promoted the film. 12 different folks had a hand in making that film.

Denzel's road to success was doing not quitting a hit tv show-St. Elsewhere to do movies-even tv and after school special films. So when he wasn't on that show doing films-his name and image was still in the public's eye.

Halle Berry was already in the public eye with a stinti on Knot's Landing and the failed spinoff of Whose The Boss-Living Dolls with an then unknown Leah Remi (King of Queens). Halle's antic off the set have slowed her progress and choices of bad roles-CATWOMAN.

Jamie Foxx was already doing comedy circuit when In Living Color came along. He proved he could do comedy and along came Ray.

The Wayans don't get credit for what they have done. They were doing what Tyler was doing before anybody heard of him. How much money do they keep by hiring kinfolks behind the scenes?

And unless she rolls with the Denzels, Will Smiths and others who are true black powerhouse Hollywood folks. She is going to be at a disadvantage.

I disagree. She just needs to do what they do. Be SELECTIVE in the roles she takes. Not every role is a good one. Nothing is wrong with a supporting role especially on a "media" favorite movie or tv show.

SUre it's cool to be the lead in a film but what happens when it flops? Like we saw with Bow Wow in Lottery Ticket or Shaq in Steel?

It also helped that some of roles fitted her or were "cult" favorites-Set It Off and Chicago. She also proved she can work behind the scenes-2 popular shows-Living Single and Single Ladies. There are some white folks that can't say that despite getting chance after chance.
