AAMU in the playoffs: What are the chances?

During the SWAC teleconference Coach Jones talked about keeping his team focused and motivated to play and how if they don't make the SCG, there is still a an outside chance for the playoffs.

What do you all think AAMU's chances are of making the playoffs (provided they beat PV)?

Very slim. I feel that it is definitely going to be a fight to get past PV. I am not sure that they (AAMU) can pull it off.

I indicated in the post "(provided that they beat PV)".

What I am asking is if AAMU beats PV, should they/would they get a call to participate in the playoffs?

If put in that situation, I would WANT us to go to the playoffs.... but in reality I dont see it happening... If we beat PV, we still would only have 2 wins against teams with a winning record (SU and PV) I think the selection committee would look at that.

But I think that Bama A&M's record ever since they transitioned into Div I status cannot be overlooked and they've consistently had some very good teams, especially defensively. :read:

If AAMU can climb Mt Kiluman-PV, IMHO, they should be STRONGLY considered. The SWAC was pretty top-heavy this year and w/ all of those "top-heavy" teams beating up on each other, it'd be a shame for such a fine year (record) not to be noted by a non-invite to the playoffs.

A very outside chance, which is a shame. They have a very good squad, and at 9-2, in any other conference they'd get strong consideration for an at-large berth. The conference is stronger this year than it's been in a while, but most people outside the conference have no idea. If PV could have pulled off a win against Pine Bluff a week ago, this game could have the potential to almost be a play-in game, with the winner coming away with a legitamite claim to an at-large berth.

AAMU is not good and then on top of that, they played Clark or Allen or somebody instead or trying to play a decent opponent. They only have themselves to blame but this is a testament that we can get a team into the playoffs.

Slim, because they would be a 3rd place team. Not to many 3rd place teams make the playoffs.

The sad part about this is that everyone crys about the SWAC having a team with a good enough record to have the SCG and send a team to the playoffs then when it finally appears to be happening no one supports the team. Sad!!

We support them... its just not a probablility that they will make it.

I'm assuming you mean third place in the entire SWAC. Remeber even if they lose and JSU loses they may still win the eastern division by point margin.

If they win the game and lose the point margin they will still be in a good position I think because they shouldn't drop in the polls but may actually move up.

It is VERY possible Alabama A&M would receive a bid. Here is my breakdown.

I don't believe Georgia Southern (Colorado State) and Hofstra (UMass) will win next week so they will be knocked out. There are eight at-larges.

At-larges
CAA..Delaware, Richmond, James Madison, New Hampshire (possible)
Southern....App State
Big Sky....Eastern Washington
Gateway...Southern Illinois
OVC...Eastern Illinois (possible)
Patriot...Colgate (possible)
SWAC....Alabama A&M (possible)

That's 10 teams. The SWAC is stronger than the OVC this season so AAMU might have the edge over Eastern Illinois. And New Hampshire might not make it because they will likely be 7-4. And Alabama A&M is closer to McNeese State (the likely opponent), than any other team available. AAMU is also ranked 23rd in the latest poll.

If their conference records are the same, the tie breaker goes to JSU because they won the head-to-head matchup. AAMU will have to win and JSU has to lose for AAMU to win the East. I THINK!!!

Those are important points. I think the committee will be a little hesistant to put in 5 teams from one conference, and A&M's relative proximity to McNeese makes them a more attractive opponent. A&M's case may be better than we assumed.

In other news, the way the seedings appear to be shaping up, Delaware may finally have to play Delaware State after years and years of avoiding the matchup.

Remember the AAMU/JSU Game was not a TV Game and ESPN wanted to do it because it was great publicity for the SWAC. It turned out to be an outstanding game for fans and the TV audiance. There were some officials here to watch that game and they could help determine who is selected. The NCAA need to find a way to get a SWAC Team in the playoffs and if not this year, I believe for sure next year. I don't think we have to give up the BC or Turkey Day Classic for the SWAC to get invited. It has always been the former Big Three that has dominated the SWAC who were not available to participate, but you have other teams who are playing some decent football in the SWAC and are being watched.

TSPN will play a major role in the SWAC getting a playoff bid.

Alabama A&M needs a win plus some help -- see Ga Southern and UNH among others...

They had a GPI of 37 heading into this last week's games...lower than even Dayton who is crowing about going to the playoffs.

Ultimately, I think they'll be left out due to all the various rankings not being in their favor, as much as the NCAA and most fans would like to see a SWAC squad in...hard to put a third place team from a league that ranks so low, unfortunately...

Georgia Southern will lose. New Hampshire will probably win. Dayton will NOT be selected. They are no different than San Diego last year. And Eastern Washington, who everyone assumes is in, has a GPI of 31, only six ranks higher than AAMU. Alabama A&M's GPI is also higher than Eastern Illinois, the second place OVC team.

In the words of former Saints/Colts coach Jim Mora..........Playoffs?! Playoffs?! Are you kiddin' me? Playoffs?! Huh!!!:bump::bump:

I think there chances are good. It would be a great day for the SWAC to have AAMU in the playoffs and JSU and Grambling playing for the SWAC Championship. That would be 3 SWAC schools in post season play.

Kenn, I have a better question for you. If AAMU wins and JSU loses to Alcorn, should AAMU choose the SWAC Championship game or the playoffs?

The SWAC bylaws do not allow a for a decision to be made. The contractually obligated to participate in the conference football championship game.
