A sad day in SWAC baseball

it's odd, when a SWACPAGE members insults SU it is personal but when Joe does it, he's forgiven.

Help me out here.

I've personally seen some things and have back up but when I tell it folks think I am exaggerating. (track coach cussing out a fan in front of HS kids, bad football field, lack of crowd support at hoops games).

If they assigned a black brotha from TSU or GSU to cover SU, the folks would be crying hate as soon as the first negative thing is written.

If I called LSU and Tuscaloosa, AL the backwoods, white folks would deem something wrong. He calls the SWAC backwoods and you all see nothing wrong with it?

Valley might be the only school who qualifies as backwoods but SU does not eve play them.

LMAO! Yeah. Just like y'all couldn't tell Tom Joyner what to say @ a local affiliate in BR after that PV-SU band dealio a few years ago, huh? :emlaugh: Negro puleaz!!!! Y'all had that *SOB* off the air faster than the space shuttle lifting during takeoff once he lit up in y'all's arse. :lmao: If you don't like it, don't buy it either. LOL

Anonymous? Tell the truth. You're actually Joe Shuffle what's his name aren't you? LOL

These comments are sad at best. :smh:

LOL @ Panthro, they contradict themselves so much that they forget past.

WHILE people argue over the writer, has anyone heard a response from the SWAC Office? Could Weeks become the next Kirby Puckett or Dan Ford - stars plunked with career ending pitches? Could Weeks expect more from other conference schools? Hey it may happen.

Has PV disciplined anyone or has the whole conference swept this under the rug?

Well, I'm offended by anyone who speaks negatively of my alma mater.....whether it's their job or not; period.

No I am not Joe..... and No I was not here for the SU-PVAM fiasco....

But as a black person living in America, I can find some other more significant things to get upset over rather than someone calling the SWAC backwoods.... If you re-read the article he called noone's schools out.... If the SWAC wants to change it image, then change its spots....

People on the board wonder why the CIAA has surpassed the many PWC's in their conference tourney...... They made progression..... From the top down they had a vision for the conference a long time ago, and simply just made thier idea and drreams come true for what they thought we should have in terms of a tourney and conference.... All I am sayng is make some progression to do the right things..

It will take all ten SWAC Universities to come together in order to solve the issues that will improve the SWAC. I personally thought that the SWAC was headed in the right direction under Rudy. I attended several meetings of the SWAC when AAMU joined the conference. Rudy in various meetings, for example: with Alumni Directors could not get to first base because they were mostly concerned about Turf issues. Most of the SWAC Presidents are not concerned about what goes on in the SWAC Office, but could provide guidance if they would make the attempt to support it and direct things to get done. In order words become move involved until we resolve some of the issues being mentioned on a day by day basis. I feel that because of so many turf issues things just went down hill with Rudy.

We will never be able to do anything until, we start acting on issues. Somebody will have to be appointed to take charge and report on the accomplishments. It is not difficult, but action is necessary. The SWAC is a great conference, but we cannot just sit back and talk about it, we must act.

Thanks MightyDog!!

I have repeatedly suggested that the major problem with the SWAC is our member institution's presidents. Until they make a bigger commitment to our athletic programs hardly anything will change.

We as alumnus of our institutions have a responsiblity, to our fellow alumnus, institutions, students and student athletes to demand that our institution's presidents make a greater effort to uphold our institutions on an academic plateu as well as athletic plateu that we all can be proud of.

To the most degree other than sure capital wealth (which I will not down play), that is the major difference between our HBCU programs and our PWCU counterparts.

Mighty Dog has suggested many time that we come together on this board to creatively and organizational try to create change with our various complaints and ideas.

Put it has become painfully obvious that we have a lot of emotional talkers and reactionist, instead of thought provoken revolutionaries and actionist.

It has been obvious that I do not agree with the way this board is often run, more over the endless trash talking and constant belittleing of one another. But, I must be honest I am in great awe of the potential force and impact that Mr. Ken Rashad has inable us to achieve via this internet website.

Will we come together to make a difference or will continue to just endlessly banter our concerns across the internet airwaves with no regards to true progress.

What will we do from this point on?

Make no mistake about Alumni Associations which are very powerful. Alumin Associations have not realized their full potential, because our affairs are mostly controlled by Alumni Directors. I content that the Alumni of many HBCUs cannot move on many things because they do not understand the arrangement between the Association, Alumni, and President. Many of them don't care, but they will respond to fundraiser. These are not negatives, but there are many things that can get done but are controlled. There is no vehicle for many alums to use their talents and money to better the university. Alums have a lot to offered, but don't want to be treated like they are still students. Many alums have not figured out that by not being active and attending meeting plays in the hands of the few that likes to be in control. The few that like to be out front are very happy only a few show up for the meeting. If we start controlling our own associations, and more than a handful get involved many changes can be made. I don't know of any President who would not welcome this. We have to get past the ones who are excluding us when we think we are included. It is not how much money you donate, but the time one spend to work on issues.

However, there are a few alums who are giving big dollars and the Presidents listen to them, but many of them don't care anything about athletics.

wow coming from a school who throws rocks at your bus after defeating your football team and allows male band members to beat on women. we know what needs work at PV maybe SU should look in the mirror

Are you actually going to reflect on something this old to try and make a point? I'm not even sure of the point that you are trying to make. I hope it is not that a wrong justifies another wrong. I was at the game and I saw the fight. Both schools were fighting and throwing instruments. I don't see how anyone can sit back and play the victim in that. But enough of that because I certainly don't see how the band's actions have anything to do with Ricke Weeks getting hit or nearly hit 6 times over 4 games. The band fight involved 2 groups fighting. This Rickie Weeks situation involved only one person getting hit. He should be commended for not losing his cool and charging the mound. I don't know how he kept his head but that speaks highly of his self control. I am curious as to how the SWAC and PV will handle this because it could leave the impression that this type of behavior is acceptable.

As for the "backwoods" comments, I must admit that I wasn't offended. The main reason is because I have sometimes felt this way about the SWAC and I have seen countless posts by a lot of us to show that we sometimes feel this way at times too. I wouldn't personally use the term "backwoods" but the SWAC can be very backward about certain things. How many folks complained a few weeks ago about not appearing on ESPN or ESPN2. How many folks complained about having a TV deal with a network that is not available in most of the SWAC cities? There are other examples but I won't make this post any longer. The SWAC is definately not where we want it to be so let's not get too self rightous.

Again, the question raised here can be answered by your AD. Call him or her up and ask. ADs are pretty smart folks, but for some reason only a few will talk to them. But when you start talking to them you will find they need support.

We have to start calling our cable companies demanding that they put MBC on. In Huntsville, the City Council get a tax from the cable company, so I am sure once we complain in Huntsville our councilman will do something about it. There is nothing like 40 Blacks showing up at a City Council Meeting. They immediately start getting nervous. But when they find out it is something small they give you what you want and start back handing out City contracts to their buddies.

I can recall when I asked for Football to be dropped from highschool, we got immediate results on our issues.

It's amazing to me how you guy's keep bring up the same ole bullsh@t and how you selectivly not see her trying to sneak up on somebody to strike them with her instrument.
But i guess that's o.k. because we're men we can take it huh?

There was a really good response from Onidan that explained ma lot about MBC. I'm going to definately investigate trying to get it added to my cable company. Until that post came out, I didn't know MBC's name. Now I've located its website and feel better informed in making sometype of request from my cable company.

All I can say is that PV's actions are tasteless, totally disrespectful to the game of baseball and straight thuggish. What in the world could that be about? We are talking about the well being of these kids. What if one of those balls would have hit his head in a manner that it paralyzed him or knock him unconscious. That is sick man. The only move that I can think of in baseball that is lower is to beam a base runner in the head on purpose as he runs the base pads. What is on the next level of sad, is the comments some of you are making. If SU had done what PV did to anybody in the SWAC or outside the SWAC, HBCU or non-HBCU, they would have been getting blasted by you. That is so hypercritical. SMACK is one thang. Rivals are one thang. But, none of us should ever defend wrong.

Oh yeah, that darn coach was aware of what was going on. If he didn't have anything to do with it and if he had any class or respect for the sport, he would have charged the mound and lit into those kids; yanked them out; suspended them from the team; and gave a public apology for their actions. He didn't so, he coached it. If you can post him taking such actions, please do, because he deserves no respect otherwise.

OK, SWAC office, What heck you all going to do? Sit back and let thugs like this maim somebody and give the conference some opening liners on ESPN and front page of USA Today and special feature on Real Sports. OK, SWAC ADs, what are you all going to do? not stand for anything and fall for whatever happens. SWAC Presidents, since you all step in and vote down most of what the ADs decide to do to advance the conference, any chance you all going to step in and demand ethics be defended and lack of it be punished?

Oh well, I thank God for keeping an angle around this kid. That could have really been some nationally ugly exposure.

PEACE!!!!

First of all as a person who participated in sports in high school, I appreciated and respected tough hard-nosed play. But I did not respect cheap shots. Now, as a PV grad who grew up as a huge SU fan, I will not automatically say that my school is right and theirs is wrong. (Yes, I remember having strong comments about the SU-PV band fight.) I for one agree that problems between (or among) schools need to be solved quickly.

Sure, I do not always like the way that things are done in the SWAC. At times I have wondered why the SWAC does or does not act. I have considered the actions or non-actions by the conference confusing at times. There is a lot of room for improvement. I have voiced my opinion loudly on this page.

But I can understand someone on this page getting a bit unnerved when a writer calls the SWAC backwards. After all how many members of the media have called the SEC office or some of its member schools backwards? I doubt that it is often. They have had a lot of opportunity because the SEC is not perfect. If this writer calls the SEC or that university off of Highland Road, Nicholson Drive, and I-10 Baton Rouge backwards, then he will have problems. Not only will he here from that school but he will receive some not so nice communication from Birmingham from the office of Roy Cramer or who is ever following him.

Understand. I have lived in Baton Rouge and the Atlanta area. So for most of my life I have heard about and followed SEC sports (LSU and Georgia). Yes, there are members of the media who at times criticize the way that the SEC does business at times. But it is limited. Trust me. It is risky business to call the SEC backwards.

This leads me to Mighty Dog comments. (I have mentioned similar things more than once.) I agree with a lot he has said on this thread. If the alumni gets more involved with the affairs of their respective alumni association, contribute tax-deductible donations and their time, and watch the president of the school, our schools would be in better shape. The presidents would have to listen to more people. Our sports? teams would be a lot more competitive. Look at the alumni of the SEC schools. They are active, and the presidents listen to them. They play a part in their schools winning. The evidence of their actions is very clear. However, as for us if we do what we have been doing which is basically nothing, we will get what he have always gotten, which is mostly nothing.

trouble is our schools are too secretive, especially in administrative issues. Presidents don't want to be seen, AD's are usually holed up somewhere, etc.

You actually see media coverage when the big schools have their administrative meetings. That's never the case for us.

as for the backwoods comments, TSU is located in a major city unlike any SEC schools, are they backwoods also?

If I was a beat writer for SU, I probably would get fired for telling the truth because I am black and most people get the preception that blacks are not supposed tear each other down,

PF,

No you wouldn't get fired because of that. If it's true, it's true. LSU is going through some stuff know where the media is killing them on some NCAA investigation about LSU football players getting grades in Kinesiolgy. A friend of mine, an associate AD, said that the media is looking for all kinds of stuff, even pulling e-mail and getting memorandom. If you are wrong, deal with it properly and not cause this kind of trouble. If the papers hated the Black schools as much as you guys say, then this wouldn't have been front page news about a White school, but it was.

LSU memo cites possible NCAA violations to help athletes

By SCOTT RABALAIS
Advocate sportswriter

A memorandum from the director of LSU's Academic Center for Student-Athletes to the athletic department's NCAA compliance officer listed incidents that he described as "direct violation of NCAA student-athlete extra benefits, rules and University academic integrity policies."

On Jan. 22, Academic Center for Student-Athletes Executive Director Roger Grooters wrote to LSU Associate Athletic Director David "Bo" Bahnsen, citing seven incidents that occurred during the 2000-01 academic year.

Four of those incidents violate four NCAA bylaws, according to another LSU memo listing the incidents.

Grooters also informed Bahnsen of an eighth incident in which there was an "intention to violate rules."

In his memo to Bahnsen, Grooters said a former worker in the Academic Center for Student-Athletes came to him Jan. 16.

That person, Grooters said, "informed me of several incidents that have occurred in the ACSA ?"

Names and other identifying characteristics of persons involved in the incidents were blacked out of the memorandums by LSU to conceal their identities.

Grooters wrote that during their meeting, the former worker "disclosed several incidents wherein (name blacked out) had asked student tutors to type papers for student-athletes, without arranging for payment."

In addition, Grooters wrote, the former worker was asked "to assist student-athletes with their academic work, far beyond what is permissible under NCAA and University rules."

On Jan. 17 and 18, Grooters interviewed the former ACSA worker and learned of the following incidents:

? In late November or early December, a student-athlete asked the former worker to type a paper for him. The worker refused. Several minutes later the worker was asked again to type the paper and complied. Grooters wrote the worker "felt pressured to type the paper and no payment was ever discussed or made."

According to the memo listing the incidents, this is a violation of NCAA Bylaw 16.3.3. It states: "Services that may not be financed by the institution include, but are not limited to, the following: (a) Typing costs, even if typed reports and other papers are a requirement of a course in which a student-athlete is enrolled. Typing costs are not considered an institutional fee under NCAA legislation."

The incident also violated NCAA Bylaw 10.1 titled "Unethical Conduct." Part B of that bylaw includes: "Knowing involvement in arranging for fraudulent academic credit or false transcripts for a prospective or enrolled student-athlete."

? In the fall of 2001, Grooters wrote, the worker observed an unnamed person writing a paper for a student-athlete from notes, then typed the paper.

According to the LSU memo listing the incidents, this is also a violation of NCAA Bylaw 16.3.3.

? In the summer of 2001, the former ACSA worker was asked by an unnamed person to summarize five articles for a student-athlete. The worker refused. The next day the worker was given a summary of the five articles and asked to rewrite them in the final format.

According to the LSU memo, this is also a violation of NCAA bylaws 16.3.3 and 10.1.

During the 2000-01 academic year, student-athletes were observed taking tests at the ACSA that were not proctored, or supervised. "On at least one occasion," Grooters wrote, "a student-athlete took his book bag with him into the testing area."

During the 2000-01 academic year, the worker was told a student-athlete needed to read a book for class and didn't have enough time. The worker was told that the book was read for the student-athlete.

In the fall of 2001 the worker was asked to meet a potential student-athlete and find answers for a test. According to the LSU memo listing the incidents, this is a violation of NCAA bylaws 13.2.1, 13.2.2 and 10.1.

NCAA Bylaw 13.2.1, entitled "Offers and Inducements," states an institution "shall not be involved ? in making arrangements for or giving or offering to give any financial aid or other benefits to the prospect or the prospect's relatives or friends, other than expressly permitted by NCAA regulations."

Specific prohibitions in Bylaw 13.2.2 include part G, "Free or reduced-cost services."

? In the summer of 2001, the worker was asked to read material, find answers to questions and highlight answers in a book for a student-athlete enrolled in a course called Kinesiology 4900.

An unnamed kinesiology instructor met with LSU officials on March 8 and alleged improper academic support for student-athletes.

? Grooters also wrote Bahnsen that a conversation with an ACSA staff member in the fall of 2001 led Grooters to believe there was an intention to violate NCAA rules. The staff member told Grooters that an ACSA worker had been up late typing a paper for a student-athlete.

The action would be a violation of NCAA bylaws 16.3.3 and 10.1, according to the LSU memo listing the incidents.

LSU Athletic Director Skip Bertman has said the investigation centers on five to 10 student-athletes, including football players.

LSU has notified the NCAA of its continuing investigation, Bahnsen said recently. Bahnsen could not be reached for comment Friday.

NCAA assistant director for public relations Jane Jankowski said Friday the NCAA would not comment on the investigation or the seriousness of the possible infractions.

Grooters' allegations set into motion an LSU athletic department investigation that went on to include LSU's human resources department and office of academic affairs.

Grooters, in his letter to Bahnsen, said he had not attempted to conduct a formal investigation but, "I was obligated to pursue the information that was given to me. From what I have learned through my informal visits with (name blacked out) I have become very concerned that (name blacked out) has violated rules and instructed others to do so."

The investigation led to a strongly worded letter on March 15 from LSU Faculty Senate President Neil Kestner to LSU Chancellor Mark Emmert.

"The Faculty Senate Executive Committee is extremely distressed by recent news coverage concerning academic violations involving the Athletic Department and the Academic Center for Athletes," Kestner wrote.

Kestner wrote, "Right now it looks like the athletic department and maybe Marian Callier (and sometimes Greg Vincent) are deciding if the student code-of-conduct was violated."

Callier is LSU's human resource management director. Vincent is LSU's vice-provost for academic affairs.

Kestner said Friday some of his concerns had since been addressed by the LSU administration.

"I told them my two main concerns were the involvement of the faculty in the investigation and concerns about -- rumors, I guess -- that faculty were being retaliated against," Kestner said.

"I have been assured that the latter is not happening. But it (the investigation) is something that concerns us a great deal," he said.

LSU officials have not said when their investigation will be completed.

"Hopefully soon," Kestner said. "I would like to really look at this situation to see if there is something inherently in need of change in terms of oversight or if everything functioned as it was supposed to. That's hard to do in the middle of an investigation."

The backwoods comment can be a mentality. in that sense I agree. The mindset of the SWAC office and the university presidents is very unprogressive and stuck into the do the same ole' out dated approach to business mentality. In that perspective, they are backwoods.

He wasn't using it in this tense, but it could also be positive. Backwoods can imply old fashion, traditional values, type of people. And that is cool, as long as it doesn't mean you are non-progressive with those traditional values.

So, I don't think its worth being upset at the messager in either case. It is our conference and school's to which I think the pressure should be applied.

I agree with, I believe EB's comment, about needing to be active in your alumni and contributing to have a powerful impact on your president and other officials at the university.

PEACE!!!
