A sad day in SWAC baseball

Weeks beanings not accidental

Rickie Weeks is as humble and easygoing as he is talented. And let there be no mistake, he's all-everything talented.

Walking with ease at Lee-Hines Field in a cool evening breeze, left elbow wrapped and packed in ice, Weeks just shook his head and shrugged his shoulders.

"I'm all right. I'm all right," Weeks said.
The lesser man would cry.
The lesser man would vent.

For as much as Southern University's hitters used Prairie View pitching for batting practice (59 runs, 53 hits, including 13 homers and five triples) in two days of a four-game sweep, Panthers pitchers used Weeks for target practice.

Three different pitchers flung six baseballs at him Sunday, with five connecting to various parts of Weeks' body. (They also hit him once Saturday, giving him six plunkings, for a team-best 11 on the season, in two days).

Most seriously, Prairie View threw at his head twice Sunday.
The first of those that sailed at his head may have been accidental.

After all, the bases were loaded and Josh Herrman (seven walks, 15 hits in five innings) doesn't have much control. But then again, Prairie View already trailed 12-4 at the time and, what the hey, what's one more run? And then again, Herrman, who had earlier used obscenities on the mound, grabbed his crotch after throwing the pitch.

In any other conference in the country, players would be ejected for hitting the same player three times, with the third one connecting with the batting helmet -- let along grabbing yourself afterward. But in the hardscrabble, backwoods Southwestern Athletic Conference, anything goes. (Prairie View could have made a great gesture of sportsmanship by pulling their pitcher with the game out of hand, but did not.)

The second of those pitches at Weeks' head did not connect. But in no way was the throw accidental. Larry Henderson had been warned two batters earlier after beaning Farrand John. Then he gave up his third homer of the first inning, a two-run shot to Antoin Gray, to trail 9-0 and Weeks stepped into the batters box.
Zooooom. Right for the noggin.
Weeks ducked. But he didn't fling the bat, rush the mound or grab himself.

He just stepped back, that familiar determined look in his face, and waited as Prairie View argued. Henderson acted as though the greatest outrage of all baseball history -- call George Will and Ken Burns -- had been foisted upon him, innocent him, when he got ejected. He threw his glove at his own dugout -- making one of his own teammates the third player he'd thrown objects at it in one inning -- and flung both arms to the sky.

C'mon, the Panthers (1-29) may be the worst team in college baseball, but they know who Weeks is.
Weeks finished last season as a freshman All-American and spent the summer as a member of the USA Baseball team. He started this season as a preseason All-American, holds a .584 batting average and will soon get another invite to the USA team. Everybody in the know in college baseball knows who Weeks is.
In the first game, Prairie View's wild strategy -- and this may be a first in baseball (again, get Will and Burns on the horn) -- was to intentionally walk the batter ahead of Weeks, Gray, to have two players on base for Weeks.

Herrman turned to his dugout and, for all to hear, yelled -- with perhaps a shrill tone of fear inside -- "That's the All-American." You couldn't hear what the reply was from the dugout because of the laughter from the crowd.

Sure, Gray is no slouch. He's punched a team-best 10 homers, four on Prairie View in two days, and has a .517 average. But at some point, if you're already down 6-1 in the third inning, you take your chances.

As it was, Herrman, of course, plunked Weeks. Then he balked once, balked again to bring in Gray and watched as Weeks scored for a 9-1 lead on a passed ball.
But when it was all over Sunday and the cool air blew in, what's done was done. Baseball is baseball. Weeks has played this game almost continuously for a year, from Japan to Alaska to the backroads that are the SWAC.

He's all right. No problem. Ice the bruises down, take some aspirin.

Meanwhile, it's business as usual for Southern coach Roger Cador. Lose All-American Michael Woods, replace him with an All-American in Weeks. Lose hitters like Marcus Chandler and Jerel Johnson, replace them with the big sticks of Gray, a Meridian (Miss.) Community College transfer, and Trae Duncan, an LSU transfer (.371 with five homers).

Just like Weeks, no matter what you throw at Southern, the Jaguars (19-3) are all right. No matter how crazy the game gets or how easy the wins come: no crying, no venting and no boasting.
That's the demeanor Weeks, as determined as he is humble, has set for this team.

Dayum PV that's pathetic!!!!
:smh:
I wish they had interviewed PV's coach after the game to get his comments.

btw, Weeks must have a lot of composure, cause if the average person keeps getting hit like that, he's gon charge the mound!!!!!

And why didn't the SU pitching staff go after some of the PV hitters, since its apparent that PV was trying to hurt their star player?????

I have said for years that PV baseball was _ _ _!!! This only confirms it. :(

BTW, what kind of strategy is that? Walk the guy in front of one of the best hitters on the team? It's time to tank Tank....

It's sad to see PV Baseball sink to this level.

When I played Baseball at SU in the 80's, we respected PV's Baseball team.

We still beat them like a drum, but their team never quit. They would be in their dug-out talking "****" like they were 10 runs ahead and we admired that about them.

Yes S Phi S, I think that it is time for Tank to retire as well. He has been their for decades and the game has passed him by.

This is sad commentary of Prairie View A & M University baseball, first the run my cousin away from the program and as well as one of the better catchers on the team. Coach Tank had tolally lost all control of his team. Well, I do not think the SWAC will have to deal with this issue much longer. Coach Tank will be lucky to make it the rest of the season with our new Athletic Director's attitude about coaches and their ability to make progress.

We have a LOT of cleaning up to do @ this university.

I've forwarded this onto others for their viewing displeasure.

I hate ot hear something like this is going on, I don't think Coach Tank would advsed his pitchers to do something like this. Sounds like someone else making this type of conspiracy up(i.e. the pitchers themselves or an asst coach). Yes the game passed Coach Tank up a long time ago and I believe like TPF said, his time is running thin w/ this AD. I played for Coach Tank when I was a freshman and he was old then and that was 20 years ago. They need to take his coaching duties away and just let him either retire or just be a PE instructor.

the story may be a little exaggerated because it comes from the SU perspective but Tank needs to go regardless. When I was told he falls asleep in the stands I figured he was old. I did a biography on him a few years back and he told me he opened Worthing High School in 1960.

He does not need to teach also, take the retirement and run.

If Grambling could get rid of the legendary Eddie Robinson, then I am of the opinion that PVAMU can get rid of "Tank". I don't know the man, but by some of your statements, he has to be a very old fellow.

You are a LIAR. One thing you know good and well is SU beat writer tells it like it TIZ. It was your misguided posterior that started a thread a few months ago talking how he was lambasting your SUperior. Apparently you have alzheimer or a napoleonic complex. In either case dont fret. Helps is available!

we're in the same profession and I know the tricks of the trade.

He bashes you all to get ahead and win that award for "most critical" at the Newspaper Convention.

But, when your there to cover a specific team and no one or very little support is present, you tend to exaggerate a little to make the story interesting. Hell, I do that at times.

If there was a PV writer there the story would be different.

banned fan,

Apparently you failed the Spin Doctor course at TX A&M@pv. It would not suprise me if you and the former AAMU football coach took the same course (Excuses 099). Maybe you missed your calling. There are many guilty criminals looking for a shaddy attorney to get their trifling butts off the hook. Why not call "a spade a spade" and admit that your baseball team display was several steps below a "low life." Your teams display was DISGUSTING and CLASSLESS. If you endorse this behavior it tells the world much about your character.

Panther Fan,

You actually are an idiot. I was at the game and your pitcher actually said, "...thats the All-American...", then proceeds to blast him with a pitch. Then curses the umpire after grabbin his nuts when Rickie walks to first. There is only one way to write that bullsh*t, and that is to tell the facts. Your team is truly garbage and they behaved as such.

First off, beanings to the head is inexcusable from the pitching and coaching staff. Anyone remember the instructed beaning of a player 5 years ago? The kid is still trying to get full vision back and was never drafted cause of his injuries. Now what if that happen to Weeks (predicted #1 draft pick for 2003)? How bad will the SWAC and PV look to the country and black players looking for a team/ conference to play in?

It would impress me if the SWAC actually did an investigation into this. (Only in the real world). IF the game was tapped, the SWAC office, and Prarie View should make their own conclusions.

Any disciplinary actions should be swift and Finite.

I applaud Weeks for being the All-American that he is and not retaliating in any type of way. I also applaud the SU team by letting their play act as an actual beaning of PV.

in the "Old school world" of baseball, there are necessary (the Southern catcher showboating after after a homerun in the 2001 SWAC tourney) and unnecessary beanings. This clearly falls in the later category.

***The Southern catcher was ejected and verbally disciplined on the spot and kicked off the team before retailiation. A classy move by Cador.

Hey JAGSTER!

HEY JAGSTER! I was there too!! I don't know if you remember me but I was the kid who wore a with SU Band Jacket Saturday, and a white SU BAND shirt Sunday. If I was Weeks, someone would have gotten dealt with.

I read this article with interest, but for some reason I cannot get past the writer labeling the SWAC. I have only seen great games played by all the teams who come to Normal and the only negative I have heard our Coach mentioned is that during the tournament he got upset about the umpires showing favoritism.

I picked out some of the writer comments because they are personal in nature.

I don't like him calling the SWAC names.

SWAC backroads? Sad.

They praise this man because they think he is the best. he talks about them and they love it. I never understood why?

as for the Advocate, how comes a brotha doesn't cover SU?

Obviously, you have forgotten some things about Baton Rouge, have ya? In your time here, I would like to know how many brothas were on the Advocate staff total? That number hasn't changed! That's why there isn't a brotha covering Southern.

Plus, everybody knows that the Advocate is owned by Manship and who is his baby ...... Them Tiggers down Highland Road.

I saw those comments Mighty, but, I was too consumed by the entire message (PV actually beaning someone).

Scheffelbien or whatever his name is should really, really watch his step. SWAC? Backwoods? He don't know us like that! Maybe SU should persuade The Advocate for another beat writer. Obviously, this guy is OVERLY biased. I wonder if he'd call the SEC backwoods? Backroad?

The way I see it....He is telling the truth..... Truth hurts when it is slammed on your foot!!!!

That goes for any one of our 10 teams/schools....

I have no problem with Joe... It is his job, WE cannot tell him what to write in his columns or paper....

If you dont like it, dont read it....

STOP taking this man's words out of context!!! The behavior of this player, his coach and the conference response to the incident is

ipso facto.............BACKWOODS!!!

Until we (SWAC and some memeber schools) exemplify more overall professionalism, negative perspectives will persist. Get a Grip and dont shoot the MESSENGER!!! Your anger is misguided. Stop crying about "the man." He is not the problem. Try this novel idea and look within!

True that. Thats what wrong with this conference. No one wants to bring the bad sh*t to the surface. The way our fans think about the SWAC is that everything is hunky damn dorry and all is excellent. Well it's not. The conference needs to be called on those aspects. Even at Southern the administration won't do anything right until they get embarrassed. Then it will get fixed. Until then, nothing happens.
