As we enter the 2026–2027 athletic season, I once again pause to speak blessings over this HBCUSports family and every institution represented here. A new season brings new expectations, new challenges, and new opportunities. My prayer is that what takes place on our fields, courts, tracks, and other venues will reach far beyond wins and losses.
Purpose and Perseverance — May every student-athlete recognize that the uniform carries both an opportunity and a responsibility. When practices become demanding, expectations feel heavy, or results do not come as quickly as hoped, may they find the strength to keep moving forward. May every setback become preparation for a greater comeback, and may perseverance shape them into stronger competitors and people.
Wisdom and Integrity — May coaches, administrators, officials, and conference leaders make decisions grounded in wisdom, fairness, and integrity. May winning never become more important than doing what is right. Let every program compete honorably, follow the rules, and remember that character will always matter long after the final score has been recorded.
Academic Achievement and Personal Growth — May our student-athletes excel not only in competition but also in the classroom. Give them the discipline to manage practices, travel, coursework, and their personal responsibilities. May professors, advisors, tutors, and mentors provide the guidance they need. Let degrees be earned, careers be launched, and futures be built through the educational opportunities our institutions provide.
Mental and Emotional Strength — May those carrying pressures that cannot be seen know that they do not have to struggle alone. Give them the courage to ask for help and surround them with people who will listen without judgment. May every campus continue building an environment in which mental wellness is valued as much as physical strength.
Leadership and Accountability — May team captains and veteran players lead by example, while younger athletes remain open to instruction. May teammates correct one another with love, celebrate each other without jealousy, and hold one another accountable without tearing anyone down. Let leadership be demonstrated through humility, service, consistency, and respect.
Opportunity and Preparation — May the gifts of our athletes create opportunities that extend beyond the season. For those pursuing professional careers, may the right scouts, coaches, and decision-makers recognize their abilities. For those whose paths lead elsewhere, may the lessons learned through athletics prepare them to succeed in their families, professions, communities, and every place they are called to serve.
Stewardship and Advancement — May every institution be blessed with the resources needed to strengthen its athletic programs and serve its students well. May facilities improve, partnerships grow, alumni become more engaged, and supporters give generously. Let every resource received be managed responsibly so that future generations may inherit programs even stronger than the ones we enjoy today.
Community and Legacy — May our games continue to bring generations together. Let alumni return with pride, families create lasting memories, and young people witness something that inspires them to believe in their own possibilities. May our bands, cheerleaders, dance teams, athletic staff, media teams, vendors, and countless volunteers receive appreciation for everything they contribute to the HBCU experience.
Sportsmanship and Unity — May rivalries remain spirited without becoming hateful. We can proudly support our schools and still respect those wearing different colors. When the competition ends, remind us that we are part of a shared history and a living legacy. May we understand that the success of one HBCU can open doors, challenge perceptions, and create opportunities for many others.
A Lasting Witness — Above all, may this season reflect something greater than athletic achievement. Through acts of kindness, courage, discipline, forgiveness, and service, may lives be changed. If anyone enters a stadium or arena feeling discouraged, unseen, or without hope, may something they experience remind them that their story is not over. May God’s grace meet each person wherever they are and give them renewed strength for the road ahead.
Protection, Safety, and Healing — May God place a covering of protection over every student-athlete, coach, official, staff member, performer, and supporter throughout this season. Keep all who travel to and from competitions safe from harm and danger, and give security personnel, medical teams, and event staff the wisdom and alertness to respond to every situation. During competition, may athletes be protected from serious injury. When injuries do occur, may they receive timely and proper care from knowledgeable medical professionals. Grant them patience during rehabilitation, encouragement when recovery becomes difficult, and complete healing according to God’s will. May no athlete feel pressured to return before it is medically safe, and may every injured competitor remember that their identity, value, and future are greater than their ability to play.
May the 2026–2027 season produce memorable moments, but also meaningful ones. May records be broken, lessons be learned, relationships be strengthened, and purpose be discovered. Whether our teams experience victory or disappointment, may we remain thankful for the opportunity to compete, fellowship, and celebrate the institutions we love.
I speak these things sincerely and faithfully over every school, team, student-athlete, coach, staff member, supporter, and family represented within this HBCUSports community.
