A Labor Day Bayou Classic!

As a Jaguar fan and a Bayou Classic Lover I say no because of the fact that they already have a big SWAC game going on during that time.Thats TxSU and PVU.Plus the Bayou Classic is a Family Tradition so since your going to be with family on Thanksgiving. You can be with Family at the game.

I get so many bayou classic WATCH PARTY invites these days......and some of these people throw the biggest tailgates at home games.

Some of the ideas I hear on this board  . If the BC moves to Shreveport RIP. And it won't be the same not on the weekend after Thanksgiving. Even though the attendance has been down, only because SU was struggling, you don't gamble with a proven product.

Do you really think that if S.U. goes 10-0 it will be the same as the 90's. Those days are over IMO.

Death, maybe for SU fans but not for GSU fans, remember GSU resides in North Louisiana.:read:

all 32 of them....for ANY BC to work, it would need to be in N.O. no matter the date. To me the date doent make that big of a difference.

So you think all the people that come to NO to party would go to Shreveport  . Look at the attendance numbers of Grams last 3 or 4 games in Shreveport  Gram don't have enough fans to carry anything.

We need to make the BC "The Event" like it use to be. Some dummy decided they wanted to make it all about the game and for it to be about the game both teams need to be winning. Before it was all about the event, and the event drew all kinds of celebrities, it didn't matter if both teams were winless.

Frat it was established way before 89. Where do you get that from? I played in 4 BC's and all but one was on Thanksgiving weekend which was because of the Dome schedule from my understanding.

Bayou Classic I was in 1974 in front of 76,000 fans at Old Tulane Stadium and I was there. I also was at the very first college game to be played in the Superdome the following year which was Grambling vs Alcorn.

32 huh. Couldn't have came to the Tech and Gram game, never been to The State Fair Classic or Delta Literacy. Hell even ULM vs Grambling. LOL. Somebody yall talk without facts and knowledge. Don't act line SU is packing stadiums like they used to. Would love for The BC to stay in NO but if it wad held in Shreveport, the only way it would die is if the weather didn't cooperate.

ULM vs Gram wasnt in Shreveport, but it was what 30,000. Gram vs Tech was 30,000 and you bragging on that. And the weather is to big of a risk, on a event that we need to be SUcessful for our athletic departments.

There was a lot of fans on the GSU side for the GSU/Tech game. There were more fans at the GSU/ULM 1st game than the 2nd. Real football fans would agree that the State Fair Classic is truly a "dog and pony" show.

Just like last year's Labor Classic, black fans don't show up for games in the rain. And most of us from north LA knows the weather is funny in Shreveport during Thanksgiving.

I think the Bayou Classic needs to be played at the end of the season. By playing conference games at the beginning of the season makes it more difficult to find non-conference games as the season progresses. Not saying it's not possible, just more difficult. Also, more fans are home during that time of the year....as many have stated. I see jstate83 mention the classic started in '89. In reality, that was the last year the classic was played before Thanksgiving. But '83, the date of any game, be it the Bayou Classic, or the Turkey Day Classic, or the Capital City has no bearing on the conference going to the playoffs until the presi-"dunces" do away with the SCG.

Hell the BC is a dog and pony show so what's the fuss? LOL. I agree it needs to stay in NO.

my dad graduated from southern in the mid 70's he told me that the classic was on thanksgiving weekend every other year because of tulane hosting lsu at home.

I'm not expecting the NBC contract to be renewed...just a gut feeling! I think the BC should remain in New Orleans... Grambling needs a game in this part of the state where the largest share of the population exists. I have no problem with moving the date to the weekend before Thanksgiving if it benefits the conference but other than that, no...leave as it is. As I posted...Grambling has something (PCC) that has great potential for scheduling an attractive non-conference opponent and opening the season with a "Classic" game in Shreveport (another recruiting hotbed for us).

Your thoughts??????
Interesting idea. . . Very interesting and I see the positive potential for all including the conference. I think it would generate a renewed fan interest. I think leaving it in New Orleans would be the right move.

I also see the potential damage it could do to scheduling a non-conference opponent later in the season and the potential growth in reach for Grambling with the Port City Classic. But I think that if we (Grambling and SWAC) want to move forward, we need to compete for national championships. Traditions are great and I have not missed a classic in 20 years but all good things must come to an end in the wake of positive change. .

Interesting idea.. .

Actually that's may be 50% true. There has been talk at GSU especially with Cedric Glover the Mayor of Shreveport and a Grambling Alum as to the benefits of moving the Bayou Classic to Labor and what type of package Shreveport could offer. One of the keys is alternating the location between New Orleans and Shreveport to force the two cities to compete for pricing of hotels etc.....
New Orleans would never let that happen.

Going to the playoffs and competing for a national championship are two different things. Valley has been playing in the SWAC for years but they have never really competed for the SWAC championship but like 2 out of the last 60 years. Competing for a national championship involves creating the proper infrastructure and we don't even have fans willing to donate $10 dollars a month to their schools and bands yet, they want to dicatate choices.

Moving the game to Labor Day would have some advantages. Both schools would be 0-0 and both fan bases would be excited but at the same time, it's extremely smalltime to play your biggest rival on opening weekend (ala TxSo vs PV).

I recall a time when the BC was a national event. I recall living in ATL and having to host friends from DC who wanted to divide up their drive on the way to the Big Easy. I am not sure that still happens.

It’s still a lot of people who have nothing to do with Southern or Grambling in New Orleans during that weekend. Not as many as it has in the pass, but enough to still make an economic impact.

I think some people still forget the devasting effects Katrina had on New Orleans. Southern had a huge fanbase there and locals would be out. Now half of New Orleans "would-be" locals live in Atlanta and Houston.
