President’s First Law: Obama Signs Lilly Ledbetter Wage Bill

President Barack Obama signed his first major bill into law today proclaiming it a major step forward for pay equity between men and women. Obama said the bill, which makes it easier to sue for pay discrimination, is “by no means a women’s issue, it is a family issue.”

The president was flanked by Lilly Ledbetter, the former Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. employee for whom the bill is named. Ledbetter worked for 20 years at a Goodyear plant in Alabama, and sued after she found out that she was paid less than her male counterparts. The battle reached the Supreme Court which ruled against her in a 5-4 decision. The law passed today overrules that decision.

How is this a white woman's cause? I guess black women won't benefit from this law too?

This is positive legislation, and one of those issues that make you sad that we needed a law to say this......

I was wondering the same thing.

I wonder how this will be enforced. Because most folks unless you are in HR don't know what someone's salary is unless they disclose this information.

Maybe we need Harriet Christian to explain this, because according to her, black men are inadequate.

The civil rights movement was about the black community concerns but white women and every other minority on the planet benefited from it too.

If you think this cause was push so long because of concern for what black woman were going through, than you need to get in line with those black women who actually believe the women movement was about them.

It just happen that a black man is in a position to make it happen for them (support), just as they did for the women movement.

There's only one law (maybe two) that was ever passed that had anything to actually do with what black people concerns were in this country.

Historically speaking, this movement was started by white women.

Do you agree or disagree with this law? Do you think women deserve equal pay for equal work?

Moot question the answer is obvious...Why should women get paid less?...Why should gays get paid less?...Why was this thread titled as it is?...Why should blacks have harder time getting credit?...Why is there only one black senator?

Pretty much

White women were included in the Civil Rights Act as a minority to dilute the economic impact of the Bill on the African-American family. And when it comes to "womens rights" have shown no solidarity with Black women, as they stay their butts at home when they have a baby while the power structure helps keep the Black family in economic malaise.

I can't believe I am with Bluedog on this. I feel dirty. LOL

Discrimination against Women (regardless of race) is a violation of Civil and Human Rights. I applaud President Obama for addressing this injustice for all women. Now as for the white woman part...remember that it was through the womb of a white woman that our 44th President was brought forth into the world.

But I feel where Blue is coming from..."somewhat".

Actually he first came through a black mans boom. MB don't confuse these young ones with stuff that really have no relevance to the end result and why that end result is.

Most city employees salaries are public record. At least in Dallas our salaries are public.

The Baton Rouge Morning Advocate just recently printed an article listing all state employees whose salaries were over $70,000. It's interesting to know that Louisiana's Black College coaches making twice as much as their white counter-part at the D1-AA level. The list was attached to the article until some errors was discovered.
