Ask Alcorn State President Christopher Brown why the Alcorn State University Braves will play arch-rival Jackson State University in Lorman this year for the first time since 1992, and he'll tell you: profit. He's not just talking about cash, though.

"There's quantity of profit, and there's quality of profit," Brown said at a community forum at Koinonia Coffee House July 6.

Brown and Alcorn State interim Athletics Director Dwayne White announced this week that the school will exercise its right to hold the football game against JSU in its home stadium this coming Nov. 17. Brown said his commitment is to Alcorn State and Lorman, where he lives and works.

But while money for the university and community was the biggest contributing factor to the decision, it wasn't the only one. Brown said it is not fair for him to rob Alcorn State's 4,000 students of the on-campus rivalry experience other students get to enjoy.

For the past 19 seasons, Alcorn State students have not known that experience. In that time, Alcorn has played the annual game against JSU, known since 1994 as the Capital City Classic, in Jackson every year. During that span, JSU holds a 13-6 advantage in the matchup, including a 51-7 trouncing of the Braves in 2011.

The Jackson Convention and Visitors Bureau offered to pay Alcorn State for transportation, lodging and meals for the football team, athletic staff, cheerleaders, band and student representatives. They also offered to pay for the university's pep rally, the coaches' media luncheon, Classic Golf Tournament, university president's reception and a step show. Altogether, JCVB committed approximately $160,000 to Alcorn to keep the game in the capital city.

Brown said the JCVB would have to offer much more than that to get Alcorn State to hold their games in Jackson. With Jackson making $2.5 million to $3 million from the match, he said both universities should get a larger portion of the profits.

"There is no way they would invite any SEC school or ACC school into this city and offer them what they offered these two SWAC schools," Brown said.

Wanda Wilson, president and CEO of the Jackson Convention and Visitors Bureau, said at Friday Forum that she thought the $160,000 proposal was only the starting point of a negotiation.

Wow...its funny y'all say that while NewOrleans rapes y'all every year.

Good for Alcorn...but Jackson should move the valley game to November so the SoulBowl can continue every year

I'm not mad at Alcorn's president for his comments. I just feel that Alcorn's overall product (football team, band, fans) does not warrant the increase in pay. Alcorn's product falling off has a lot to do with why the game has fallen off so much.

To be real, Alcorn has been reaping the benefits of JSU carrying the classic by ourselves since 2000. Their fan base and band have been small time during that period which has caused a decline in the level of interest....similar to the Bayou Classic. It is what it is.

JROCK is very pleased that Alcorn is stopping Jackson from stealing from them. Get your money Alcorn State!!!

"If you come to the table with $500,000 cash and expenses, then we'll have to begin our conversation. That's for both schools," Brown said to Wilson about negotiating in future years.

He is making the point that both schools should get more, not just Alcorn. If JSU's president gets on board, by demanding more also, it could be a win-win for both schools. The opportunity for both schools to get more is obvious based on the numbers provided. Chris Brown seems to be visionary in his thinking, if he is eventually successful at getting more money it will be interesting to see if negotiating tactics change across the board in the conference for football classics.

The city of Jackson isn't making 3 million off this game. That figure is the economic impact, how much is being spent at hotels, etc. A 3 million dollar economic impact isn't enough to justify the amount of money Brown is talking. To put that number in perspective, the economic impact for the Southern Heritage Classic to the city of Memphis is around 16 million.

Who cares if Alcorn moves their game to Lorman? That's more money for JSU when it's our home game.
We don't have to split with them like SU has to split with Grambling, even though they make up two-thirds of the crowd. In that situation, SU is getting ripped off and don't even realize it.

Now take for instance JSU keeps all of the profits during it's home game. If only 30,000 tickets are sold, that's $900,000 dollars for the school. That's not counting parking, tailgating and concession receipts. That money can be used to cover expenses with some left over, so numbers-wise, that's almost a million dollar payday.

The only reason folks don't want to go to Lorman is due to their inability to handle large crowds like the one JSU is going to bring. It's going to be total chaos.

Well, you certainly know much more about the situation than I ever will, but do you think Brown really expects that kind of money or is he just using a negotiating ploy to get more for the school than they would otherwise?

Yeah its a lot of grand standing. good luck with him on that

Damn! Alcorn's president doesn't mince words do he? I like him.

Yeah, but it's a stupid comment. You can't ask for $500K without knowing your worth. I'm glad the game is going to Alcorn so they can see if it benefits them. The best way to know is to try. But for him to say that he needs $500K every year is like saying he can make a $1M at home in one year. Needs to look at how much they make when SU comes to Alcorn and use that number to figure out what a JSU game would be like.
