A few good points here, will have to check the book out in its entirety, but enough already with this "black athlete is the victum" non-sense,,, just my knee-jerk reaction. And "$40 million slave" my eye. All these black athletes gotta do is manage their fncking $40 million and plan for their/their family's(not a bunch of women) future instead of living for today, and if they want to live and spend for today, fnck everything in sight and not save their millions and invest in something other than cars and clothes only to end up broke and/or on drugs or with checks garnished for 8 kids by different women, then that's just stupidity and bad decision making on their part that they have to live with.
We need to stop coddling black athletes, black males in general for crying out loud. A fncking average man would be GLAD to make $40 million, many do and do just fine with the millions. Many black male athletes simply suffer from "first generation wealth" syndrone where they go from having nothing to having everything and don't know how to fncking act and/or manage their business/life affairs. Nobody's forcing them to take the millions or even go into sports for that matter.

It ain't the $40 Million Dollar athlete that's being treated like slaves. It's the college athlete who is still on the plantation. They are in a billion dollar industry and they get peanuts in return.

Then these same black kids go to the NBA and continue to entertain white America. In turn, big bucks go back to the 1-A schools via merchandising, TV, millionaire athletes who give back, etc...
How does this benefit Black America??

Sadly, our little black kids see playing pro sports as the 'end all- be all' and that's what they need to do to get that Escalade or buy momma that fur or his girl a diamond watch. Whereas the average person going to college to get a degree and make money so they can give back and invest and enjoy life and leave a legacy for their kids are doing it so they work on someting long-term. It's really sad when our little black kids are only trying to be pro ball players so they can flash the bling, the cars and the chicks. Most of them nowadays aren't playing because they love the sport. No such thing anymore. Their motivation is totally different.
As black folks we spend more time worried about whether or not we have enough cash to 'buy a car', 'get some rims' and 'flash some bling'. And it's that mentality that will always keep the owners rich and the players 'poor', for lack of a better term.
Don't get mad at the author cuz he called these athletes out. There are plenty more folks we need to be mad at...

In addition to what Jag-Tig posted, and not having read the book, I wouldn't be surprised if the author is lamenting the overall unrealized economic impact potential that has been squandered by so many of the so called "highly paid" athletes. I'm not just talking about the so-called 40 million dollar one. This could occur with any who has a substantial amount of income at his/her disposal, an amount that is not necessarily anywhere near $40 million.
Too many of these athletes in up with far less means than they should have because of the lifestyle they lead while they have the money, bad decisions, poor advice, and/or lack of knowledge with respect to handling, investing, and managing money. Leveraging the money that they make so that they can have sustainable economic impact for themselves and/or in the community is one of the failures that I think the author might be referring to. Some have done well, invested wisely, started businesses that are flourishing, created jobs in communities, and started wealth building. But some have not, and maybe disportionately so. I suspect that the author will treat this in his text. In that context, it is a failure of taking advantage of an opportunity that could have long-term positive lasting effects in a number of different ways.
