Re: SWAC Championship attendance

Yall can go on and on about the clubs, restaurants and everything that Houston has to offer, but 2 years in, and there isn't much difference in attendance than the scg birth in Bham . (Although the expenses have no doubt gone up)
There is a ceiling that this game has. Thats not a knock against Houston. Some of us tried to get folks to see that Bham wasnt the problem with the attendance.

38K was good attendance

Houston is a better city than Birmingham, better weather, better facilities, better environment all around. The game could only do so much in Birmingham, its no ceiling in Houston at all for this game. It has the potential to grow bigger than what it is right now. You should have saw the Galleria mall before the game, full of Southern and Alcorn people. The SWAC got it right by moving this game out of Bham, sorry MH but you and the other people biased towards Bham are wrong. Houston is a better city for this game than Bham bottom line lol....

The game definitely needs to stay in Houston inside of an enclosed arena. No more Birmingham!

Re: SWAC Championship attendance

GF,
Im not arguing the virtues of Houston over Bham. Houston is one of the largest cities in the country, so its not shocking that Houston would have more "stuff". Folks in a mall and "buzz" are subjective. Whats not is attendance at the game. And thats what we're talking about, right? Again, not much difference there

Re: SWAC Championship attendance

All the SUites were sold out goodness. When has that ever happen in Bham. Honestly they probably were lying with the numbers in Bham. Houston has no ceiling for this game. This event can only grow.

But it is a difference in the attendance, the last time the game was in Birmingham the attendance was 32k which was the highest it had been in years. Before that the attendance average around 23k thats mediocre in I'm opinion. You can blame it on the weather but at least in Houston you're in a facility where the weather is not a big deal. The last time ASU was in the SCG the attendance was dreadful. The attendance in Houston has been great, 3rd and 4th overall since 99.

Re: SWAC Championship attendance

GF,
The way to gauge those numbers is to compare like years. Thats why i said the scg birth. The first 2 years in Houston are about the same as the first 2 years in Bham.

Anybody at that game could tell you how bad the weather was------

Man Brave natation showed up and out yesterday I was shocked!!! And talk trash to SU fans lol

Re: SWAC Championship attendance

Let me break it down for you. Houston >>>>>>>> Birmingham. Discussion over. lol

Dome in December > open air stadium in December

Go to social media (Twitter, Instagram) and see all the pics people of themselves in the suites. That alone is a big factor in keeping the game in Houston.

The true test will be the first year in which we get a matchup like UAPB/Valley or AAMU/Texas Southern.

P.S. I move that if the SWAC keeps the post game concert thing, that they get New Edition as the act. They hit a Home Run with Maze/Frankie Beverly.

Those years in bold were the two most highest attended games to-date in Bham. Houston have to improve over those numbers, regardless of it's many venues. I don't have a problem with the City of Houston.

Re: SWAC Championship attendance

Dude, JSU is the reason those numbers were high. Had nothing to do with Birmingham.

Re: SWAC Championship attendance

I think the numbers in Houston are amazing, considering the fact that Alabama schools do not really support the championship here. Plus, the Texas schools don't even show up in droves like they really can...prolly cause it's not their team playing. Now, if support starts coming in from the Alabama schools and if the mentality of the Texas SWAC schools change at-large about Black college football games, attendance will definitely trump those Birmingham numbers. It just takes a few years of growing the event and promoting it more. I attended both games here in Houston, and I really see alot of potential for the Championship here. I see 50K plus numbers in the future for this.

Re: SWAC Championship attendance

I want the game to stay in Houston because of the dome...I have no problems with it being there.

Re: SWAC Championship attendance

I think if anyone of the Alabama programs win the east, attendance will take a slight hit. Just a guess but we'll see sometimes in the future. The first two LA/Miss. matchups with traditional SWAC rivals certainly was good match ups for the first two games in Houston. My guess is year 3 has a good chance of being LA./Miss. again.

yes it will take a hit but the only thing that really matters to me is bringing another SCG trophy back to Normal!!! The one we have needs some company...

True....Just a feel, I don't see it happening anytime soon. It will be interesting to see how recruiting goes for you all. Bama State seems to be in disarray as well. My guess is for the next few years, Mississippi is going to rock the east. We'll see...

recruiting?...I'm not worried lol...especially with how well our new staff did last year with only 3 weeks to recruit!

we will be in Houston soon enough...just watch!

Alcorn will probably be a favorite to win the East again next year!

I don't care where the SWAC puts A&M cause they never get it right anyway just like they didn't this year lol
