The houses shown in the picture below are box car/shotgun homes. Railroad companies used to give people old railroad box cars to make homes out of them. Also, old tank cars with the ends cut off would become drain culvers and old flat cars would become single span bridges.

Not disputing the $33,000 per year average in Mississippi but why is it when the biased media do a story like this, they show photos of old shotgun houses for the South like everybody live in those and then show multi-million mansions when talking about the any non-southern state that 99% of the people in those states could not afford ever?

just asking?
I mean dam, they could have come and took photos of the homes in my neighborhood of 9 to 5 workers. Instead, they go str8 to the old "sugar ditch" region, take a photo, and then head back out like they actually researched.

 Man you know that's how most people outside of Mississippi think of Mississippi. They only go by what they see on T.V. and magazines. Once they actually visit certain areas in Mississippi they get a real sense of how people live. Even in my hometown, black people are building nice homes.

There's plenty of those shacks in Mississippi.

I just asked the question about WHY.
There are plenty of those shacks everywhere, in every state, including states not named Mississippi or in the south.

Of course - but just as people think of slums and tiny apts when they think of places like New York, they think of shacks in Mississippi. You know why - its not that hard to figure out. And we don't exactly play that down - have you been to Clarksdale lately, with the buildings pruposely made to look old and rustic and the share-cropper shacks now re-purposed as hotel "cottages"? One thing about urban areas - they may have more slum than we do but they market themselves as diverse cultural centers. With the exception of the Coast, we market ourselves as country and outdoorsy. And we do everything we can to undermine the only Urban portion of the state. Mix what we present ourselves as with what people already think of us and shacks is what you get.

Wait, slow your roll... ClarksVegas does that to market the blues population that migrate there for their blues and cultural experiences. Those are folks trying to make money from the Shack Up Inn.

I guess you are right, because when I think of MS this comes to mind...

The best think to ever come out of Mississippi, man I loved this show!
Carol O'Connor helped launch the careers of a lot of black actors.
